How to Get Surf in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you can get the Surf HM (HM03) by speaking to the character inside the Secret House located within the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City.

To get to Fuchsia City, you first need to wake up the Snorlax blocking the bridge on Route 12 using the Poke Flute. Then, just follow Routes 13, 14, and 15 to reach the city. You’ll get the Poke Flute from Mr. Fuji after rescuing him from Team Rocket at the top of the Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town.

To get into the Fuchsia City Safari Zone, you’ll need to pay 500 Poke Dollars. Once inside, head to the right, walking past the house and the small patch of grass. Then, use the fenced path to enter the next area.

Head right into the grassy area. Then, go up the nearby stairs to the rocky ground. Turn left and go down the second set of stairs to get back down to the ground. Continue left, then go up again until you reach another rocky area with stairs.

Climb the stairs, turn left, and go down another set of stairs. Stay close to the rocky wall as you go up, then left. Continue straight ahead and enter the fenced pathway to reach the next area.

Continue heading left until you reach the grass. Then, walk up onto the rocky area, turn left, and go down to return to ground level. From there, walk left towards the pond, and follow the path upwards as far as it goes.

Head to your right until you see another Safari building beside a grassy area. Continue to the top of this section, then turn left and follow the path until you reach a wall. After that, go down past the grass and you’ll find a fenced path that leads to the next area.

After arriving, turn left. You’ll quickly see a large building nestled among the trees – this is the Secret House. Go inside the front door and speak with the character you find there to get HM03 Surf.

The Safari Zone limits each visit to 600 steps. You’ll be automatically kicked out once you reach that limit. If you’re trying to get the Surf HM (HM03), it’s best to head straight to the Secret House without trying to catch Pokémon, as reaching it already uses up most of your 600 steps.

How to Use Surf in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen

You can only use HM03 Surf to travel on water outside of battles once you’ve beaten Koga at the Fuchsia City Gym and received the Soul Badge.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Surf allows you to swim across any water area, and some locations can only be reached by using it. Once you get HM03 from the Safari Zone, you can teach it to Pokémon in your team that can learn the Surf move.

To use Surf, simply go to any body of water, such as a pond or river, and press the A button. If you have a Pokémon in your party that knows the move Surf, it will activate automatically, letting you begin swimming.
