While leadership skills, personality, and personal connections are important for the Hokage in the Naruto anime, fans are most interested in their fighting abilities. Every Hokage, deserving of their high rank, is an incredibly powerful ninja – among the strongest of their generation – and possesses impressive skills to protect the Hidden Leaf Village.

While each Hokage is skilled with basic ninja techniques and tools like shuriken, they’re really defined by their most powerful, signature moves. Some Hokage even created completely new, incredibly strong techniques or were the only ones who knew certain fighting styles. This makes it possible to identify each Hokage’s ultimate move and rank them based on how powerful and useful they are in battle.

Minato Namikaze: Flying Thunder God Technique

Similar to the previous Hokage, Tobirama, Minato Namikaze is remembered for creating one famous technique while being most skilled with another. While Minato is well-known for inventing the Rasengan, which was later used by his son and Jiraiya, his truly defining technique was the Flying Thunder God Technique. Though Minato was proficient with the Rasengan, he didn’t develop it further like Naruto would later on.

The Flying Thunder God Technique is the foundation of Minato’s incredibly fast fighting style, earning him the nickname ‘Yellow Flash.’ This technique allowed him to instantly teleport anywhere using space-time manipulation, letting him catch opponents off guard and follow up with powerful attacks. Interestingly, Minato wasn’t the first Hokage to use it – Tobirama originally created the technique. While it might be considered the least powerful of the Hokage’s ultimate abilities, the Flying Thunder God Technique remains a formidable power in battle.

Tsunade: Creation Rebirth

Tsunade, the Fifth Hokage and one of the legendary Sannin, was a formidable fighter known for her powerful, chakra-enhanced punches and kicks. She was a master of taijutsu, and could also summon the massive slug Katsuyu to help her in battle. However, her most impressive technique was Creation Rebirth – a powerful ability that perfectly showcased her dedication to both healing and incredible strength, though she reserved it for only the most critical situations.

Tsunade can quickly heal injuries by channeling chakra to accelerate cell growth, allowing her to stay in battle longer. This rapid cell regeneration gives her a form of immortality, as damaged tissue is quickly replaced. However, this ability isn’t without drawbacks. Creating new cells depletes the body’s natural limit for cell division, effectively shortening Tsunade’s lifespan. Because of this, she reserves this powerful technique, Creation Rebirth, for emergencies only.

Hiruzen Sarutobi: Reaper Death Seal

Many powerful ninja techniques come with terrible costs, or are simply too cruel to use regularly in battle. Even experienced leaders like Hiruzen Sarutobi preferred reliable techniques like summoning jutsu, only resorting to extremely dangerous moves like the Reaper Death Seal when absolutely necessary. That’s because using the Reaper Death Seal requires the user to sacrifice their own life, making it a last resort.

As fans of Naruto witnessed in the original anime, this terrifying technique attacks the opponent’s very soul using a frightening spirit. It can instantly kill by completely removing the soul, but the user can also target and remove just parts of it. This is how Hiruzen defeated Orochimaru by taking his arms – and thus, his ability to use those techniques. He’s known for abilities like his Mangekyo Sharingan, Susanoo, Kamui, and the Lightning Blade, but many fans consider his most impressive move to be a combination of Kamui and the Lightning Blade.

  • This technique is pretty much what you’d expect: it combines Kakashi’s Kamui ability – which can warp space – with his fast-paced Lightning Blade attacks. By using this, Kakashi can quickly send opponents to the Kamui dimension, effectively taking them out of the fight.

Tobirama Senju: Edo Tensei

Tobirama Senju, the strong-willed Second Hokage, is remembered as a legendary figure for inventing the Shadow Clone Jutsu – a technique later famously used by Naruto Uzumaki. But his contributions didn’t stop there; he also developed the dark and powerful Edo Tensei, a jutsu that allows people to temporarily escape death, though with significant consequences.

Interestingly, Orochimaru, one of the Legendary Sannin, later used this same technique during the Konoha Crush invasion to bring back Tobirama, also reviving his brother at the same time. This powerful jutsu requires human sacrifices to work, which is why it’s rarely used – it’s a truly terrifying ability. It makes sense that the villains in Naruto are more likely to employ Edo Tensei than the heroes, as no current leader or authority figure would ever want to risk using such a dangerous method.

Hashirama Senju, who famously co-founded the Hidden Leaf Village with Madara Uchiha, was an incredibly powerful ninja. He was known for a wide range of skills, but his Wood Release technique was his most impressive and effective in combat.

Hashirama’s unique ability to create wood inspired other ninjas to try and replicate it using technology, but no one ever reached his level. His most powerful technique was called True Several Thousand Hands, which summoned a massive, Buddha-like statue covered in arms. This statue could do anything the user commanded and served as an incredibly strong shield. It was so powerful that even the strongest tailed beasts seemed small and helpless against it.

Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage, was known for having an incredible range of skills, much like his predecessor and teacher. He was even more powerful than Kakashi, blending standard techniques with the immense energy of the Nine-Tailed Fox and his mastery of Sage Mode. Naruto constantly developed new abilities, so his most powerful move was always changing.

Most Naruto fans agree that the Six Paths: Ultra Big-Ball Rasenshuriken is Naruto’s strongest attack. It combines all of his best skills and techniques, representing the peak of his power and fighting style.
