Pokemon TCG Product References One of Its Biggest Competitors

A recent release from the Pokemon Trading Card Game includes a playful nod to its rival, Yu-Gi-Oh. The first set of cards for 2026 is already generating excitement among fans, and it’s the biggest expansion in Pokemon TCG history, featuring 290 cards. Called Ascended Heroes, the set introduces a new, rare card type called Mega Attack Rare, and also provides new, strong cards to enhance decks that were popular in 2025.

The new Ascended Heroes Pokemon card set showcases the best cards released over the past year. It introduces several new Pokemon with gameplay features that were popular in 2025, including reprinted versions of sought-after Stellar Tera Pokemon, new Owner’s Pokemon, and even Mega Pokemon. The set also features the first cards based on characters from the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A game – Urbain and Canari each have their own cards, and Corbeau appears on a reprinted version of the well-known Supporter card, Boss’s Orders. Interestingly, fans recently found a reference to a famous card from the Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game within the official Ascended Heroes player’s guide.

Official Pokemon TCG Guide Contains Yu-Gi-Oh Reference

The latest Pokémon guide includes a funny nod to the classic Yu-Gi-Oh! card, Exodia the Forbidden One. A Twitter user named SaulGholdman shared a section about a new Pokémon card called Anthea & Concordia, which is playfully titled “The Forbidde-N One.” This title is a reference to Exodia, which instantly wins a Yu-Gi-Oh! game when all five pieces are collected. Anthea & Concordia works similarly within Pokémon: if a player uses a deck built around N’s Pokémon and has all of N’s unique Pokémon in play, they receive three extra Prize Cards whenever they knock out an opponent’s Pokémon.

The card Anthea & Concordia cleverly references the popular game Yu-Gi-Oh because it can instantly win a game under the right circumstances. Even without that, taking three Prize Cards is a strong ability. However, when used against Mega Pokemon – which give up three Prize Cards when defeated – Anthea & Concordia can let a player win immediately by claiming all six of their Prize Cards in a single turn.

The latest Pokemon card set has a lot of powerful cards, not just Anthea & Concordia. One standout is Mega Feraligatr ex, which can inflict a massive 400 damage in a single turn. Other cards like Mega Dragonite ex, offering a free switching ability, and Mega Hawlucha, with an ability to survive powerful attacks, could also be valuable additions to many decks. Fans got a sneak peek at these new cards in Pokemon TCG Live, though the physical ‘Ascended Heroes’ cards won’t be allowed in tournaments until early March because of shipping delays.

Fans of the Pokemon Trading Card Game have something new to look forward to! The next expansion, called Perfect Order, will be released in late March. It features Mega Zygarde on the cover and will include 120 cards – a bit fewer than the previous set, Ascended Heroes. Excitingly, Mega Starmie and Mega Clefable will make their first appearance in this expansion. Perfect Order is expected to be a great addition to the game and will help kick off the celebrations for Pokemon’s 40th anniversary.
