While Ash Ketchum is the central character in the original Pokémon anime, Pikachu is truly the star. As the face of the entire franchise, Pikachu is almost always by Ash’s side, accompanying him on adventures from their home region of Kanto to faraway places like Johto and Galar.
While many fans enjoy the newer seasons of the original Pokémon anime, most still prefer the very first seasons. Those early episodes introduced us to the main characters and have a special, unique charm. Pikachu was particularly cute at the beginning of the series, and the first season is full of memorable moments. Whether he’s helping his friends or playfully copying other Pokémon, Pikachu always provides entertaining and adorable moments.
Pikachu Deeply Cares About Misty
The Mouse Pokémon Is Not Comfortable Battling Against Her
Ash and Pikachu are definitely best friends. But Pikachu is a very caring Pokémon, and he’s friendly to everyone, both people and other Pokémon. Misty is one of his close friends – she was the first human he befriended after Ash. Even though she and Ash often argue, Pikachu and Misty usually get along well because Pikachu is so upbeat and positive.
In the Pokémon episode “The Water Flowers of Cerulean City”, Ash is trying to earn a Cascade Badge by battling the Cerulean City Gym Leader. To his surprise, he ends up facing Misty, who is the only Gym Leader willing to fight him. Ash wants Pikachu to battle, but Pikachu unexpectedly refuses. Pikachu doesn’t want to fight Misty because he cares about her as a friend. Although Ash is frustrated, he lets Pikachu watch from the sidelines. Pikachu happily cheers for both Ash and Misty, not wanting to choose between them. While Ash is annoyed by Pikachu’s refusal, it’s a heartwarming moment that highlights how much Pikachu values his friendships.
Pikachu Refuses To Lose Against Raichu
Ash and Pikachu Support Each Other’s Goals
Image via OLM In the episode “Electric Shock Showdown”, Ash challenges Lt. Surge, the Gym Leader of Vermilion City, to a battle. Lt. Surge’s Raichu is incredibly strong and has defeated many Pokémon, sending them to the Pokémon Center for recovery. Pikachu is unfortunately defeated by Raichu’s superior Electric-type attacks and needs to rest. While Pikachu recovers, Ash receives a Thunder Stone, which could evolve Pikachu into a Raichu. Ash wonders if he should use it and asks Pikachu what he thinks.
Even though Lt. Surge’s Raichu defeated Pikachu in their last battle, Pikachu doesn’t want to evolve. Ash, understanding his friend’s wishes, fully supports Pikachu’s decision, even if it means they won’t become stronger through evolution. They decide to concentrate on quick, speed-focused attacks, and the strategy proves successful. Their win makes Pikachu’s choice to stay as he is even more meaningful.
Pikachu’s Love of Pancakes
Todd Snap Tries To Take a Picture of the Adorable Scene
Pokémon are known for enjoying treats like Poffins, Poke Puffs, and especially Rare Candy. But, as shown in the Pokémon anime and games, they also love human food! Pancakes are a particular favorite – Todd Snap, a character in the anime, makes them exceptionally well. They’re so good, in fact, that Brock, the group’s usual cook, even asks Todd for his recipe!
The heroes soon discover that Todd, despite being an excellent cook, is truly passionate about photography. He’s determined to get a picture of Pikachu enjoying pancakes – a meal the little Electric-type Pokémon clearly loves! The problem is, Pikachu gets shy around cameras and tends to shock when he’s nervous. Still, Todd is committed to getting the perfect shot, so he joins the group for a bit to try and make it happen.
Pikachu Thanks Ash for Saving His Life
A Bond Never To Be Broken

Ash and Pikachu generally get along, supporting each other’s goals and agreeing on most things. However, when they first met in the anime, Pikachu wasn’t happy about being Ash’s Trainer. Despite being adorable, Pikachu initially shocked Ash when he tried to pick him up and refused to go inside a Poké Ball. Because of this, Pikachu is rarely ever seen inside a Poké Ball throughout the series.
Ash gets frustrated when Pikachu won’t cooperate and a Pidgey gets away. This annoys Pikachu, and Ash accidentally angers a large group of Spearow, leading to Pikachu getting hurt. Unable to escape, Ash bravely protects Pikachu, which motivates Pikachu to return the favor. As the weather improves and a rainbow appears, Ash and Pikachu, exhausted but determined, make their way to the Pokémon Center. Pikachu, grateful for Ash’s kindness, looks at him with tired but happy eyes, and affectionately nuzzles his chin, just like a loving pet.

Pikachu Acts Like a Big Brother Towards Togepi
The Baby Pokémon Loves To Be Around Pikachu
Following an exciting time at Grampa Canyon, Ash departed with a single Pokémon Egg he’d discovered. Many people, including Team Rocket, were eager to get the Egg, particularly when it hatched into the uncommon Pokémon, Togepi. Ash won a battle tournament, but Togepi imprinted on Misty the moment it hatched, choosing her as its Trainer and caregiver.
I watched as Misty really stepped up as a caregiver for Togepi, but everyone else helped out too. Pikachu especially seemed to take on an older brother role, always looking out for the little Spike Ball Pokémon. Togepi, being a baby, was always wandering off and getting into mischief, which worried Pikachu. Despite the worry, they had a lot of fun together – I remember one time they played a quick game of hide-and-seek, and it was adorable!
Pikachu Refuses To Leave Ash Behind
Ash Tries To Leave Pikachu With Its Own Kind
The episode “Pikachu’s Goodbye” is a beloved part of the Pokémon series, marking a touching moment in Ash and Pikachu’s bond. From the moment they first met, Ash and Pikachu became best friends. But their friendship faces a challenge when Pikachu encounters a group of other Mouse Pokémon – something he hasn’t experienced since he was a Pichu. After Pikachu rescues them from Team Rocket, the other Electric-type Pokémon welcome him into their group.
Seeing other Pikachu living freely makes Ash question if his best friend would be happier in the wild instead of continuing their training. He runs off, telling Pikachu to stay with the group, and reflects on their adventures together. But to his surprise, Pikachu chases after him, encouraged by the other Pikachu! Ash is thrilled when Pikachu returns and they share a heartfelt hug as Pikachu jumps into his arms.
Pikachu’s Adoration of Ketchup
The Mouse Pokémon Is Heartbroken When Its Ketchup Bottle Is Broken
Pikachu loves pancakes from photographer Todd Snap, but he really loves ketchup! In the Pokémon episode “Showdown at Dark City,” Ash and his friends arrive in a remote desert town and discover it has two rival gyms. Surprisingly, the townspeople don’t like Pokémon Trainers, because the gyms often force travelers into their battles. Luckily, after the group explains they don’t want to fight, a friendly restaurant owner offers them food and tells them the story of Dark City’s problems.
While Ash and his friends deal with ongoing trouble from Team Rocket and the Kaz and Yas Gyms, Pikachu finds a special treasure: a bottle of ketchup! He carries it with him everywhere, until Yas’s Scyther accidentally breaks it, much to Pikachu’s dismay. Luckily, the heroes remember Pikachu’s love for ketchup and later use it as a clever trick to defeat the Scyther and the Kaz Gym’s Electabuzz.
