One Piece’s New Loki Reveal Creates A Plot Hole That Completely Ruins Devil Fruit Lore

This article contains spoilers for the One Piece series.

The anime and manga series One Piece is now in the Elbaf arc, which is part of the story’s final saga. A key character in this arc is Loki, the Accursed Prince of Elbaf. He was first hinted at during the Whole Cake Island arc, and it was clear he would become important. So far, Loki has lived up to the hype and proven to be a compelling character.

Loki is a fascinating and strong character who has quickly become central to the story, receiving significant focus from the author, Oda, in both his development and power displays. Oda has also given Loki’s Devil Fruit ability a lot of attention. However, this has inadvertently created a major inconsistency in the established rules of Devil Fruits. Loki is now the first character shown using a Devil Fruit power while being restrained by Sea Prism Stone, which fundamentally clashes with how these powers are supposed to work and creates a significant plot hole.

One Piece Created A Major Plot Hole With Loki’s Powers

Prince Loki Has Done The Impossible In Elbaf

Loki is a remarkably powerful character in the world of One Piece, largely due to his incredibly rare and powerful Devil Fruit. It’s been revealed that Loki possesses the National Treasure of Elbaf – the legendary Dragon Devil Fruit. He ate this fruit fourteen years ago to prevent Harald from gaining its power and giving it to Imu. Consuming the fruit instantly allowed Loki to transform into a massive dragon, dramatically increasing his abilities and ultimately enabling him to defeat and kill Harald, the strongest king Elbaf has ever known.

Years later, Loki fought Shanks and lost. As a result, he was imprisoned deep underground on the island of Elbaf, near the massive Adam Tree. He was also bound with a Sea Prism Stone, which blocked his Devil Fruit powers. As we’ve seen in the story, Sea Prism Stone shares the same properties as seawater and completely cancels out the abilities of those who eat Devil Fruits.

Loki claimed the Sea Prism Stone was preventing him from using his powers. However, when he was partially freed with only one cuff remaining, he demonstrably used his lightning abilities to destroy a large branch in Elbaf. This creates a significant inconsistency in the One Piece story – even the author can’t explain how this happened. The story consistently establishes that Sea Prism Stone completely negates Devil Fruit powers, yet Loki was able to use his abilities while still wearing a cuff.

Sea Prism Stone Should Shut Down Devil Fruit Powers

Although there’s debate about whether Sea Prism Stone completely cancels out Devil Fruit abilities, the story has consistently shown that even brief contact with it is enough to remove those powers. We see this with Luffy – the instant he touches a Sea Prism Stone cage, he loses his abilities and becomes weakened.

Damn it, I can’t move! Get the jutte away from me! — Luffy when pinned by Smoker

Smoker’s jute rope consistently cancels out Luffy’s Devil Fruit powers, a fact that remained true even after the timeskip. The clearest proof came during the Wano Country arc when Luffy was forced to work in the Prisoner’s Mine while shackled with a weakened form of Sea Prism Stone. According to the author, Oda, even this weakened stone is enough to completely suppress the abilities of someone as powerful as Luffy. Notably, the stone also blocked Luffy’s Haki, a power separate from his Devil Fruit. This has now become a well-established rule within the world of One Piece.

  • Loki using his lightning abilities even with Sea Prism Stone shackles on his ankle doesn’t make sense within the established rules of Devil Fruits and Sea Prism Stone. It completely contradicts how those powers are supposed to work.

One Piece’s Loki Plot Hole Cannot Be Fixed Even By The Volume Release

Oda has created a significant plot problem in One Piece that seems difficult to resolve. Usually, minor inconsistencies in character details or conversations can be addressed when the manga volume is released. However, this issue is more complex: Loki’s restraints were only removed recently by Hajrudin and the Straw Hats, and that’s when he was finally able to fully use his Devil Fruit abilities. This makes it hard to retroactively fix the inconsistency.

Oda can’t retroactively change Loki’s restraints because it would break the established storyline of the Elbaf arc. Fans will just have to accept this inconsistency and not dwell on it.
