The world of Jujutsu Kaisen consistently emphasizes power and the drive to become stronger. This idea is fundamental to the story, highlighting how immense strength can isolate individuals from others, setting them apart as truly unique.
Throughout the Jujutsu Kaisen series, different characters have been considered the strongest at various points. This article will break down each major story arc to identify who held that title and explain why they were more powerful than everyone else at the time.
Gojo Was The Strongest In The Prequel Series
Arc: Cursed Child Arc
I watched the prequel arc, and it was clear Gojo had already been the world’s strongest sorcerer for a long time. Even though he wasn’t always front and center – he had to contend with the Night Parade of 100 Demons, for example – his power was undeniable. That was true even with Yuta Okkotsu around, another incredibly powerful sorcerer who actually had more cursed energy than Gojo did.
Gojo Sets Himself Apart At The Very Start Of The Franchise
Arc: Fearsome Womb
The first story arc of Jujutsu Kaisen establishes Gojo as the most powerful sorcerer alive. He was so strong, in fact, that his birth triggered the emergence of incredibly powerful Cursed Spirits, meant to maintain the world’s balance. While Sukuna also appears in this arc, he’s initially weak due to being incomplete, and Gojo easily defeats him, solidifying Gojo’s position as the strongest character at that time.
Mahito Was The Series’ First Major Villain
Arc: vs. Mahito Arc
Mahito is widely considered the most cruel and sadistic villain in the story, making him a particularly disliked character among fans. Despite this, he’s undeniably one of the strongest, demonstrating his power—thanks to his unusual abilities and incredibly strong Domain Expansion—during the arc featuring Yuji and Nanami. While he is eventually defeated due to the complicated relationship between Yuji and Sukuna, it takes a significant amount of time before he’s finally overcome.
Gojo Almost Killed A Special Grade With One Attack
Arc: Kyoto Goodwill Event
During the Kyoto Goodwill Event, sorcerers from Tokyo and Kyoto Jujutsu High were attacked by incredibly powerful Cursed Spirits, including the especially dangerous Hanami. While students like Yuji and Todo fought bravely, they would have been defeated by Hanami if Gojo hadn’t intervened. Gojo quickly overpowered the villain with a single Hollow Purple, further solidifying his reputation as the world’s strongest sorcerer.
Megumi Proved His Potential Against A Special Grade
Arc: Death Painting Arc
The story hinted that Megumi might one day become even more powerful than Gojo, but viewers never got to see that happen. While Yuji and Nobara were making significant progress, Megumi had to battle a powerful cursed spirit alone. Despite the challenge, he managed to defeat it using a partially developed Domain Expansion, showcasing his incredible potential and strength.

Gojo Awakened Quite Early On In His Life
Arc: Hidden Inventory
In Gojo’s backstory, Toji was the most powerful character, thanks to a unique ability that allowed him to overcome both Gojo and Geto. However, he couldn’t deliver a finishing blow to Gojo, which triggered Gojo’s full potential. This awakening led Gojo to master his most powerful skills and gain a deep understanding of Cursed Energy, ultimately making him the strongest sorcerer of his time.
Sukuna Showed Immense Strength Even At 15 Fingers
Arc: Shibuya Incident
The story arc started with Gojo being sealed away, effectively removing him from the conflict. Soon after, Sukuna was reborn with a significant amount of power and immediately caused widespread destruction in Shibuya. Even without using his full abilities, he defeated several of the strongest characters. During this brief but devastating appearance, Sukuna effortlessly defeated Jogo and Mahoraga, proving why he’s been so feared for centuries.
Sukuna’s Strongest Form Was Realized With Megumi
Arc: The Culling Game
Sukuna was already incredibly powerful, but he reached his peak during the Culling Game after possessing Megumi’s body. With fifteen fingers and the Ten Shadows technique at his disposal, the King of Curses became even more frightening. He used his vast cursed energy to summon exceptionally strong Shadows, allowing him to defeat skilled sorcerers like Yurozu.
Sukuna Proved Himself To Be The Strongest Of All Time
Arc: Shinjuku Showdown
-
The showdown between Gojo and Sukuna was the most highly anticipated fight in the entire Jujutsu Kaisen series, pitting the strongest current sorcerer against the strongest of all time. The battle lived up to the hype, delivering an incredible fight filled with everything both characters had to offer. Ultimately, Sukuna narrowly defeated and killed Gojo, solidifying his place as the undisputed strongest of all time.
Yuji Is The Strongest In The Sequel Series
Arc: Modulo
The story of Modulo takes place about 80 years after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen. During his final battle with Sukuna, Yuji unlocked powerful abilities and began mastering his cursed energy. Now, having had 80 years to refine those skills – more time than even Gojo or Sukuna had – it’s likely that Yuji has surpassed them in strength.
Jujutsu Kaisen can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
