All File Locations in Resident Evil 7

There are 32 Files hidden throughout Resident Evil 7, including newspaper articles and important documents. Finding all of them isn’t difficult and will give you a deeper understanding of the game’s story and its connection to the larger Resident Evil universe. If you collect all 32 Files, you’ll also unlock the “The Devil in the Details” Trophy/Achievement for completionists.

File Location 1

Name: Email from Mia.

Location: N/A.

To find it, first look at your inventory when the game begins. Then, carefully examine the file that has a picture of Mia on it.

File Location 2 and 3

Name: List of Names (Front) and List of Names (Back).

Location: Guest House B1.

You can find this file on a table across from Mia’s room in the Guest House. Don’t forget to flip it over and read both sides to collect all the information. You’ll reach this area after finding the hidden passage behind the fireplace.

File Location 4

Name: Home-Improvement Store Receipt.

Location: Dining Area (Main House 1F).

How to get: Look at the notes stuck to the wall on the northern side of the Dining Area.

File Location 5

Name: Newspaper Article – Missing People.

Location: Living Room (Main House 1F).

You can find it by looking at the pile of newspapers on the coffee table in the Living Room. This is the same location where you find one of the Dog Heads in Resident Evil 7.

File Location 6

Name: Newspaper Article – Over 20 Missing.

Location: Main Hall (Main House 1F).

How to get:​​​​​​​ Look at the table on the left of the shadow puzzle’s location in the Main Hall.

File Location 7

Name: Jack’s Journal.

Location: Recreation Room (Main House 2F).

To find it, open the dresser drawer located behind the bar on the west side of the Recreation Room.

File Location 8

Name: Jack’s Memo.

Location: Recreation Room (Main House 2F).

To find what you’re looking for, check the table at the back of the room. It’s on the left side, near the Bobblehead and Antique Coin.

File Location 9 and 10

Name: Travis’ Memo (Front) and Travis’ Memo (Back).

Location: Northeastern save room (Main House 1F).

You can find these files by opening the drawer next to the item chest in the save room located in the northeast corner of the Main House – be sure to check both sides of each file! You’ll reach this room as part of the story after solving the shadow puzzle, while heading down to the basement.

File Location 11

Name: Incinerator Room Memo.

Location: Incinerator Room (Processing Area B1).

You can find this File by checking the note posted above the sink in the basement of the Main House’s Incinerator Room.

File Location 12

Name: Memo About Relief.

Location: Grandma’s Room (Main House 2F).

You can find this item on the table beneath a broken mirror in the small Grandma’s Room, which is part of the Recreation Room. However, you’ll need the Scorpion Key from the basement to get inside. While you’re there, grab the Broken Shotgun – you can use it to get the real Shotgun in the Main Hall if you’re playing Resident Evil 7.

File Location 13

Name: Doctor’s Letter.

Location: Grandma’s Room (Main House 2F).

How to get:​​​​​​​ In the same room as File 12. Search the drawer to the left of the entrance.

File Location 14

Name: Zoe’s Investigation Notes.

Location: Trailer in the Yard.

Okay, so if you’re stuck trying to get these, here’s what I figured out. In RE7, you need to find all three Dog Heads before you can even think about going into the trailer. Then, head to the east side of the trailer – look for a bunch of notes pinned to the wall near the Magnum. That’s where you’ll find what you need!

File Location 15

Name: Marguerite’s Warning.

Location: Old House (1F).

You can find this file pinned next to the Crow door on the west side of the Old House. However, you’ll first need to solve the shadow puzzle to get to that area.

File Location 16

Name: Serum Documentation.

Location: Altar (Old House 2F).

How to get:​​​​​​​ Open the box in the Altar room of the old house after you get the Crow Key.

File Location 17

Name: Marguerite’s Notebook.

Location: Altar (Old House 2F).

To find it: Head north from the main altar where File 16 is located. Look for a small room at the end of the corridor and check the dresser. The notebook you need is right next to the piano.

File Location 18

Name: Memo on Deputy’s Head.

Location: Trailer in the Yard.

To obtain this file (it’s quite disturbing!), go back to the trailer after your phone call with Lucas and examine the refrigerator.

File Location 19

Name: Lucas’ Journal.

Location: Kid’s Room (Main House 2F).

To obtain this file: Once you’ve acquired the Snake Key in the Dissection Room, use it to unlock the Snake door and enter the Kid’s Room. Then, look at the journal on the left side of the room to find the file.

File Location 20

Name: Torn Page From Journal.

Location: Kid’s Room (Main House 2F).

You’ll find it in the same room as the previous file, hidden underneath the broken mirror on the west side.

File Location 21

Name: Clock Memo.

Location: Master Bedroom (Main House 2F).

To find it, use the Snake Key to unlock the Master Bedroom on the second floor of the Main House. Once inside, check the note attached to the globe next to the clock, which is to the left of the bed.

File Location 22

Name: Memo on Burnt Corpse.

Location: Testing Area 2F.

To obtain this item: After defeating the large Molded enemy in the barn section of the Testing Area, take the elevator upwards. Then, examine the memo attached to the body seated in the chair.

File Location 23

Name: Jim’s Letter.

Location: Wrecked Ship 1F (As Mia).

To find this File, go to the first floor of Wrecked Ship and enter the dormitory. Look for the bottom bunk in the northeastern corner of the room – it’s among all the bunks on the east side.

File Location 24

Name: Giovanni’s Will.

Location: Wrecked Ship 1F (As Mia).

To find the file: Turn around from where you found the last one, head south into the next room, and check the table with the crate. The file is located to the left of the crate.

File Location 25

Name: Orders.

Location: Ship 2F (As Mia).

You can find this file immediately after starting the VHS tape while playing as Mia. It’s located on a table in the room containing the item box on the second floor of the ship.

File Location 26

Name: Tattered Secret Document.

Location: Wrecked Ship 3F (As Mia).

To find it, check the box in the northeast corner of the room, near where you saved and watched the VHS tape.

File Location 27

Name: Mechanic’s Memo.

Location: Elevator (Wrecked Ship 2F).

To reach this location, you’ll first need to find the Lug Wrench inside the Cabin. Once you have it, you can open the elevator hatch and climb down. The wrench is attached to the wall next to where the Fuse is located.

File Location 28

Name: Email Log.

Location: Salt Mine.

Now that you’re playing as Ethan again in Resident Evil 7, it’s time to find the remaining files. The first one is located in the mine hideout – head upstairs to the area filled with pictures of Eveline and interact with the laptop there.

File Location 29

Name:Infection Report.

Location: Salt Mine.

To find this file, go to the room directly south of where you found the previous one. Look on the table near the entrance – it’s hidden among a stack of books.

File Location 30

Name: E-Necrotoxin Document.

Location: Salt Mine.​​​​​​​

To obtain this item, check the box located in the center of the room where you found the previous file. Be sure to read the note on top of the box.

File Location 31

Name: R&D Report [1 of 2].

Location: Salt Mine.​​​​​​​

To find the file, check the report on the desk with the pet carrier in the southeast corner of the room.

File Location 32

Name: R&D Report [2 of 2].

Location: Salt Mine.​​​​​​​

To find the final file in Resident Evil 7, go to the room with the last three files and look upstairs on the west side. If you’ve been using this guide, picking it up will unlock the “The Devil is in the Details” Trophy/Achievement.
