Resident Evil Requiem is finally here after a long wait, and players are flocking to it! While many are excited about the character Leon, any interest that brings new people to the Resident Evil series is a win.
In Requiem, you’ll experience the story through two characters: the well-known Leon S. Kennedy, and a new character named Grace Ashcroft. You’ll switch between playing as each of them. Grace has a unique connection to the past through her mother, Alyssa, but is also forging her own path.
I’ve been playing as Grace, and it’s a classic survival horror experience – which honestly means it’s way tougher than playing as Leon. Leon’s all about feeling powerful, but Grace? You really have to fight for every inch. That said, it doesn’t have to be brutally hard if you know a few tricks.
Having completed the game in many ways – even with tough self-imposed challenges like finishing in under four hours, avoiding healing items, and skipping crafting – I’ve learned a few tips to improve how you play as Grace.
This article mentions a few small details about what happens in the game, but it won’t reveal any major plot points.
10. Utilize Distance
Isolate Enemies if You Have to
When playing as Grace, you’ll frequently encounter groups of enemies, particularly later in the game. These enemies are easily alerted by noise. Rather than firing a shot and attracting everyone, try to draw one enemy away from the group first, then eliminate them quietly.
It’s a common strategy in video games, particularly when facing large groups of enemies. You’ll often see it in survival horror games, or any game that’s intentionally difficult, like the Souls series. It’s especially useful on harder difficulties, like Insanity mode, where enemies can take a lot of damage and are hard to defeat.
This helps prevent being overwhelmed – even if you’re struggling with a difficult enemy, you won’t have to deal with all of its allies at once.
Don’t worry too much about zombies chasing you forever – they’re programmed to only follow you within a limited area. Once they give up and start walking away, that’s the safest time to attack.
9. Be Creative with Problem-Solving
Think Outside the (Puzzle) Box
Playing as Grace demands quick thinking and adaptability, as situations can rapidly become dangerous. A prime example is navigating Rhodes Hill Care Center for the first time – you’re forced along a straight path completely filled with monsters.
Things don’t have to be so difficult if you just think through your options. For instance, in the hallway connecting the kitchen and dining room – the one with the bathroom and the unsettling amount of blood – there’s a zombie who’s determined to switch off all the lights. He’ll go to any lit switch, turn it off, and then guard it to keep it that way.
This allows you to lure the zombie to one end of the hallway, then quickly turn on the light. While he walks down the hall, you can sneak around as he turns the light off. This temporarily removes the zombie as a threat and saves your supplies, keeping him distracted for a good amount of time.
You don’t need a specific situation to get creative with the puzzle. There are multiple ways to solve the Moon Puzzle Box, and players have even discovered a hidden solution the game developers didn’t anticipate.
8. Read Everything
Sometimes There’s a Bonus
This game involves collecting and reading a lot of different files, which can feel overwhelming. However, it’s crucial to do so, as these files contain valuable information – some offer clues and hints, while others provide direct answers you’ll need.
Throughout the game, you’ll discover safe codes hidden in documents. Reading every file you find will reveal these codes, allowing you to open the safes and claim valuable rewards to help you survive.
Beyond that, you’ll find documents explaining how to make items that can significantly improve your chances of success. Don’t overlook these texts just because they appear to be background information – they often contain valuable and helpful details.
Make it a habit to engage with any document you come across, and you might be surprised by the benefits it brings.
7. Manage Your Inventory Wisely
Hip Pouches Will Save the Day
Throughout the Resident Evil series, carefully managing your limited inventory has always been key to survival. The new game, Requiem, continues this tradition, challenging players to make the most of a very small carrying capacity with the character Grace.
Managing your inventory is really important in this game. You’ll collect a lot of items quickly, and it’s easy to fill up all your carrying space. If you don’t want to constantly return to The Box to unload things, pay attention to how full your inventory is. You can craft or combine herbs to create more room, but it’s best to have some free slots available just in case.
As a huge fan of staying organized while exploring, I have to say these Hip Pouches are a game-changer! They seriously give you so much extra space for all your stuff, which means I’m not constantly running back to my storage box. I still need to make trips occasionally, but it’s way less often, and I can actually enjoy the game without being weighed down!
6. Pick Your Battles
If All Else Fails, Sneak or Run
If you’re like me and grew up playing the original Resident Evil games, you probably remember being able to clear out rooms completely, letting you run around and grab all the items. But playing as Grace, especially at the beginning, isn’t like that – you’re too vulnerable to just rush in and clear everything.
The zombies in this game are much tougher than before, so you can’t just rush through areas like an unstoppable force. While you can still clear out rooms, it takes longer and often requires returning to the same locations multiple times after you’ve already searched them.
When you first start playing, you’ll need to be smart about fights. If enemies are too strong or there are too many, it’s best to sneak past or run away. Luckily, there are tools to help you avoid direct combat – like bottles you can throw to create distractions – so you don’t always have to rely on shooting.
I’ve learned that once I’ve stocked up on ammo and supplies, it’s worth going back to really clear out a room. Just hoping those enemies haven’t mutated into a Blister Head by the time I run through again – those guys are seriously tough!
5. Carry a Charm
Or Two … or Nine
If you purchased the Deluxe Edition of the game, you’ll receive special charms that provide gameplay benefits. These charms offer a variety of advantages, covering everything from improving your defense to boosting your attack power. The standard version of the game also includes charms, but they are different and are earned by completing specific challenges, like defeating Chunk as Grace.
Once you find a charm, equip it immediately. Although it uses up space in your inventory, the benefits – like avoiding deadly attacks or extending the life of your temporary weapons – are definitely worth it.
Feel free to collect charms, but remember you need enough inventory space to hold them. It’s best to limit yourself to two, as managing your inventory effectively is really important.
They’re meant to help players, so let these charms help you.
4. Look Everywhere, Loot Everything
Leon Has His Own Loot
Grace and Leon both collect items, but Leon doesn’t often venture into Grace’s areas and has his own storage space in the old, wooden wardrobes. This means you can really let loose and explore everything as Grace.
Okay, so when I’m playing as Grace, I just grab everything I can find, even if it doesn’t seem useful for Leon right away. Seriously, pick up everything. The trick is really keeping my eyes open and searching the environments, because there’s a ton of loot hidden around – it’s classic Resident Evil, after all!
Also, the white vases you see are fragile, but because they blend in with their surroundings, they offer extra storage space within The Box.
3. Only Use Requiem in Emergencies
Especially with Limited Bullets
When you play as Grace, you quickly obtain Requiem, a strong revolver, but you start with only one bullet. Throughout the game, you can search for additional bullets, or find lockpicks to open drawers and collect rare metal, which can then be used to craft more ammunition. However, bullets are scarce overall, and especially hard to find for Requiem.
Therefore, save Requiem for truly critical situations only – don’t use it for everyday problems, as a pistol is usually enough. Reserve it for dealing with the biggest, most dangerous creatures you encounter.
How easily you can defeat enemies also depends on the game’s difficulty. Some tougher enemies, like Chunk, need multiple hits from the Requiem weapon to go down. However, on easier settings, enemies like The Butcher or The Chef can be defeated with just one shot, as long as you aim accurately.
Once you obtain Requiem, set it aside for now. You won’t know when you’ll actually need to use it.
2. Save Your Scraps
Don’t Lock Out a Potential Life-Saver
The game’s Infected Blood Crafting system is a really neat feature, mainly because of how useful it is. You can basically make anything you need as long as you have blood and a few Scraps.
It’s easy to want to use Scraps right away because they’re helpful in a pinch. However, if you use them all up, you might find yourself short on resources later and unable to craft what you need. Resist the urge to use them immediately and save them for when you really need them.
It’s a good idea to store a few Scraps in The Box, particularly if you can’t carry them with you. That way, you’ll have materials on hand to make things other than bullets when you need to.
This is especially true when you get to ARK. Keep your empty bottles, too.
1. Save Your Blood Bags
Don’t Be Reckless with Supplies
Don’t forget to save your blood bags! Once you can start using blood in crafting, you’ll find them as loot with different amounts inside. Be sure to store them in The Box.
Blood is plentiful for much of the game, especially if you defeat every zombie and collect from available sources like buckets and puddles. However, between Rhodes Hill and ARK, blood can become hard to find, particularly if you’ve already explored the area and used up your supplies.
Storing your blood bags properly would prevent you from running low when you need them. If you can’t find any blood nearby, you can go to The Box – where you should have stored them – and that will help you out in an emergency.
I managed to complete the entire game relying only on the blood found within the environment, keeping all the blood bags I collected safe in The Box. That proves it’s best to save those bags for when you really need them.
