Elon Musk Warns AI May Go Rogue, Here’s Why

As a seasoned crypto investor with over two decades of technology and business experience under my belt, I find Elon Musk’s latest warnings about AI and endorsement for Donald Trump intriguing yet not entirely surprising.

During an online discussion at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, sounded a warning about potential dangers associated with artificial intelligence (AI). He shared his worries regarding the direction AI might be heading, estimating that there’s a 10% to 20% likelihood it could lead us down a risky or harmful path.

However, despite the concerns, he maintained an optimistic outlook, suggesting that there remains an 80% to 90% likelihood of AI leading to positive outcomes.

Elon Musk Warns AI Could Turn Rogue, Predicts 10-20% Risk of Dangerous Path

Speaking to attendees at the Saudi forum, Musk underlined the potential for artificial intelligence to develop in unexpected and possibly harmful ways. He estimated a 10% to 20% risk of AI veering into a “dangerous” direction, urging vigilance from global leaders.

This projection reflects Musk’s ongoing concerns about AI, which he has repeatedly emphasized as a technology requiring careful oversight and ethical considerations. However, he also struck a hopeful tone, remarking on an 80% to 90% probability of AI yielding positive advancements.

Musk further projected that artificial intelligence could surpass human capabilities in the future, potentially within the next one to two years. He noted that AI’s growth trajectory could lead to a level of sophistication that enables it to perform any task a human can accomplish.

Elon Musk emphasized,

“In my opinion, artificial intelligence represents a substantial risk to our existence that requires careful monitoring. In fact, it could potentially match or even surpass human capabilities within the next one to two years.

By 2040, Elon Musk estimates approximately 10,000 humanoid robots will be in existence. He emphasized the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence in sectors such as automation and robotics. As AI’s abilities grow, so too will its influence on both simple and intricate tasks.

This rapid development, he cautioned, calls for a proactive approach to ensure that AI’s influence on society remains beneficial. Moreover, it is important to note that Bitcoin miners are embracing AI which offers a stable foundation for sustainable operations.

Concerns Over “Woke, Nihilistic” AI Models

Beyond the worry of AI behaving autonomously, Musk also highlighted the potential ideological biases he perceives in certain AI models, particularly those originating from the U.S. He cautioned that AI systems shaped by a “progressive, nihilistic” perspective could prioritize controversial viewpoints over factual truths, thereby skewing their alignment with impartial and accurate information.

Musk pointed out that AI models developed in areas such as the San Francisco Bay Area could be influenced by the region’s socio-political viewpoints, potentially impacting the way these AIs make decisions.

Musk pointed out that this matter might make AI’s role in our society more intricate, especially as it delves into increasingly delicate subjects. Consequently, he urged that AI should focus on achieving truth-oriented goals and refrain from acquiring socio-political prejudices.

Tesla CEO Endorses Donald Trump

Furthermore, Elon Musk publicly voiced his support for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, expressing worries about excessive regulation. Musk contended that a Trump administration would create a more favorable climate for technological growth. Additionally, he pointed out that the current Biden administration and regulatory framework tend to hinder innovation.

He referred to regulatory delays in the aerospace industry, explaining that securing a permit to launch a rocket takes longer than building the rocket itself.

Musk connected this viewpoint with his support for Donald Trump, expressing a greater sense of positivity about AI’s future during Trump’s presidency.

Furthermore, the co-founder of Dogecoin shared his enthusiasm about the possibility of increased media focus on Dogecoin should Donald Trump win the 2024 U.S. election. Markus suggested that mainstream news outlets might be more inclined to take a closer look at Dogecoin due to Elon Musk’s public endorsement, potentially leading to more serious coverage.
