EEZ combines different Ethereum rollups into a single, unified system. This allows for smooth and easy transactions, while still maintaining the security and value of Ethereum (ETH).

Ethereum has become more efficient thanks to scaling efforts, but these changes have spread activity across several different networks. Now, Gnosis and Zisk are suggesting a solution called the Ethereum Economic Zone (EEZ) to better connect these networks. The EEZ aims to make it easier for rollups to work together and create a simpler, more streamlined experience for developers and users.

EEZ Proposal Looks to Streamline Ethereum Rollup Infrastructure

Friederike Ernst, co-founder of Gnosis, and Jordi Baylina, founder of Zisk, have launched the Ethereum Economic Zone. This new project, created with support from the Ethereum Foundation, is designed to improve how rollups function. It will allow rollups to communicate with both the main Ethereum network and each other within a single transaction, streamlining processes and enhancing efficiency.

Proponents of the proposal believe it addresses a major issue with Ethereum. While rollups have increased the network’s capacity, they’ve also resulted in fragmented, separate systems. Each of these systems typically has its own resources – like places to trade, development tools, digital wallets, and user experiences – making things more complicated for both developers and users.

EEZ suggests a new system where rollups connect directly to Ethereum and to each other, allowing for seamless interaction. This would mean a smart contract on one rollup could work with contracts on Ethereum or another rollup all in one transaction.

This system aims to make transactions between different blockchains more dependable. It ensures each transaction is either fully successful or doesn’t go through at all, minimizing the problems caused by incomplete processes. Additionally, proponents highlight the benefit of combined resources, which are protected by the Ethereum network.

A streamlined setup could make things easier for developers. Protocols would only need to be deployed once to work across the entire Ethereum network, eliminating the hassle of managing different versions, wrapped tokens, and repeated connections to various bridges.

Users will enjoy a more seamless network experience. Digital assets, personal information, and roles could transfer between different connected platforms without needing to be manually moved each time. Even when transactions happen on networks other than the main Ethereum layer, users will often still pay gas fees using ETH.

Ethereum Economic Zone Positions ETH as Core Settlement Layer for Rollups

The plan prioritizes keeping Ethereum central to the network. ETH will continue to be used for paying transaction fees (gas), finalizing transactions (settlement), and verifying data. The goal is to ensure that activity on these connected networks stays closely linked to Ethereum, rather than moving away from it.

As a crypto investor, I’m watching this project closely. It’s being built by the teams at Gnosis and Zisk, and it’s getting funding from the Ethereum Foundation, which is a good sign. They’re setting it up as open-source software, managed by a new association in Switzerland called EEZ. The goal seems to be to keep it neutral and open for anyone to contribute, which I think is really important for long-term success.

Aave and other infrastructure teams were among the first to contribute. The organizers encourage more developers, protocols, and builders to participate.

The recent announcement was preceded by earlier work. Records from GnosisDAO governance in February 2026 reveal conversations about a six-month research project involving Jordi Baylina.

The project explored if Gnosis Chain could become a fully integrated layer-2 network with seamless interaction between its applications. It seems EEZ is the outcome of that development.
