- I’ve stuck to purposefully dark romance anime, and removed any shows that don’t seem to realize how dark their stories are.
- Although their quality is not relevant to this discussion, most of these dark romance anime are worth watching.

A thriller that includes a romance doesn’t count if that relationship is good for the characters or simply a minor detail. But a story where the central focus is a troubling romance definitely fits the genre. Dark romance anime explore relationships that are damaging, all-consuming, or based on obsession. Instead of providing comfort, these relationships are often draining and emotionally intense.
The central relationship is what defines this type of anime – it’s the most crucial element. While most romantic stories have some conflict, dark romances take it further. The love between the characters is the source of danger and tension. This tension can stem from things like emotional issues, differing values, unequal power dynamics, or hidden agendas. The characters often have genuine feelings for each other, but they express them through controlling behavior or unhealthy dependence.
This idea differs from traditional tragic love stories, where characters are torn apart by outside forces or destiny.

The Definitive Yandere Girl And Her Horrifying Obsession
Future Diary features a particularly intense and disturbing love story that often shocks audiences. The character Yuno is famous—and infamous—for her extreme and frightening actions, quickly establishing her as one of the most well-known ‘yandere’ characters in anime.
Yukiteru and Yuno appear to be a sweet anime couple, but Yuno is actually dangerously fixated on him. This obsession quickly turns violent as she begins killing anyone she perceives as a threat to their relationship, even going so far as to kidnap Yukiteru for alone time. The anime Future Diary centers on Yukiteru’s terrifying experiences after discovering his cell phone diary can predict the future, thrusting him into a life-or-death game.

I’ve noticed a lot of people seem to write off Mirai Nikki these days, almost like it’s a guilty pleasure! I really don’t think that’s right, though. There’s a lot to love about it. The battle royale aspect is surprisingly well done – it’s genuinely shocking at times, but it always feels earned. Okay, Yuki isn’t the most compelling protagonist, but honestly, Yuno is the show. She’s the ultimate yandere character, and she’s the reason I keep coming back to Future Diary.
3. Happy Sugar Life
Being Obsessed With Someone Can Make One Act Erratically
Okay, so I have to talk about Happy Sugar Life – it’s a dark romance anime that’s seriously messed up, but I was totally hooked! The story centers around Sato, who becomes completely obsessed with this little girl, Shio, and wants to control every aspect of her life. It definitely dips into horror territory and isn’t afraid to show really flawed, unlikeable characters – Shio is pretty much the only genuinely sweet one. Happy Sugar Life is best experienced as a mystery, so it’s more enjoyable if you don’t know much about the plot beforehand. However, be warned: this anime is intense, disturbing, and not suitable for younger audiences or those seeking a lighthearted, twisted romance.
Should You Watch Happy Sugar Life?
While not a masterpiece, Happy Sugar Life stands out from the crowd. It’s a disturbing blend of psychological horror, obsessive relationships, and a twisted romance, and its unsettling nature is largely thanks to the terrifying character of Satou. Though the supporting characters are uneven, Satou’s performance is strong enough to carry the series.
4. Koi Kaze
A Sibling Romance In An Anime That Doesn’t Sensationalize It

Koshiro recognizes how wrong his feelings are, but feels powerless to stop himself as his sense of right and wrong begins to crumble. The narrative creates a heavy, inescapable feeling, and the siblings become dangerously reliant on each other.
Should You Watch Koi Kaze?
Even though Koi Kaze deals with a sensitive and rarely discussed topic, it’s a grounded and thoughtful drama that feels genuinely affecting. It doesn’t shy away from the discomfort of sibling attraction, but instead portrays it realistically. Be aware that this story explores challenging themes and may make you feel uneasy.
5. Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii
Love, Obsession, And The Yakuza
I’m really intrigued by Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii! It’s a perfect example of a show built around a relationship that’s just…complicated, to say the least. You’ve got Yoshino, who’s the granddaughter of a big-time mob boss, and she’s basically forced into an engagement with Kirishima, another heir from a powerful family. The catch? She really doesn’t want anything to do with this guy, but she’s stuck living with him for a whole year! It’s a recipe for drama, and I’m here for it.
At first, Kirishima doesn’t find Yoshino very interesting, but that quickly changes when she confronts him. After that, he becomes quite fixated on her, even though she doesn’t seem to reciprocate his feelings. Their relationship isn’t particularly romantic, though the dangerous situations they face because of their ties to the Yakuza do bring them closer.
Should You Watch Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Ii?
I’d say Yakuza Fiancé is a really fun dark romance anime, and it gives you a glimpse into the Yakuza world too. While the ending isn’t perfect, the story is definitely worth watching.
6. School Days
Proof That Being In A Love Triangle Can Have Deadly Results
Anime is full of love triangles, but School Days features a particularly intense one. Makoto initially dates several girls, telling himself he’s just figuring out what he wants before finding his true love, Kotonoha. Unfortunately, he hurt a lot of feelings along the way, including those of his classmate, Sekai. Sekai became fixated on Makoto and desperately tried to win him over, even though he was already in a relationship with Kotonoha and didn’t reciprocate her feelings.
While School Days might not be considered a top-tier anime, it’s definitely memorable and stands out from the crowd. The ending is particularly well-known – almost everyone has heard of it – and it tends to distract from the show’s otherwise compelling exploration of complicated teenage relationships.
Should You Watch School Days?
Okay, seriously, don’t let the memes scare you off! You need to experience School Days if you’re into anime. I’m telling you, you might absolutely hate it – and you will definitely end up loathing Makoto – but that’s the whole point! It’s the ultimate series to watch just to feel those strong emotions. Trust me, it’s a wild ride and a total ‘hate watch’ experience.
7. This Monster Wants to Eat Me

This anime has a really interesting setup. Hinako unknowingly attracts spirits called youkai, and they all want to eat her! Luckily, she’s rescued by Shiori, a mermaid, but there’s a catch: Shiori actually wants to eat Hinako too, and plans to wait until she’s reached peak deliciousness. Until then, she’ll protect Hinako, even if Hinako doesn’t want her to.
The anime This Monster Wants to Eat Me is a girls’ love story, but it’s a unique one. Shiori deeply loves Hinako, though in a complicated way. Meanwhile, Hinako starts to develop feelings for Shiori, who is also her would-be killer. Shiori is the only one who understands Hinako’s sadness and offers her a way out through death.
Should You Watch This Monster Wants to Eat Me?
Despite losing some momentum towards the end, This Monster Wants to Eat Me offers a fresh and interesting take on the popular Girls Love genre.
