Oh, darling, have you heard? Cardano’s very own Charles Hoskinson has just dropped a bombshell-a free 357-page book on zero-knowledge systems, because apparently, we’re all clueless about ZK proofs. (Thanks, Charles, for pointing that out!) The book, adorably titled Proving Nothing: A Layered Guide to Zero-Knowledge Proof Systems, is basically his way of saying, “Here, let me fix your ignorance.” And yes, it’s on GitHub, because where else would it be? Creative Commons license included, so feel free to share it with your crypto-curious aunt.
357 Pages of ZK Magic, Because Why Not?
In a livestream that could’ve been a TED Talk but wasn’t, Hoskinson confessed the book was born from his shock at our “shockingly low level of understanding” of ZK cryptography. (Ouch, Charles, but go off, I guess.) “So I wrote a 337-page book,” he said, casually, like it’s the same as whipping up a latte. Wait, no-it’s now 357 pages, because why stop at 337 when you can add more layers of complexity? It’s a “non-technical manual,” he insists, though it’s packed with enough tech jargon to make your head spin. Think of it as a seven-layer dip, but instead of guacamole, it’s cryptography.
I wrote a book

The book’s whole schtick is this seven-layer framework, which is supposed to help us mere mortals “understand all ZK systems from that lens.” (Because, obviously, we were all just dying to understand ZK systems.) Then, naturally, it nudges you toward Midnight, Cardano’s privacy-focused network, because what’s a free book without a bit of self-promotion? The GitHub README puts it more elegantly, calling it a guide to “the entire zero-knowledge stack from the ground up.” Spoiler: ZK systems don’t remove trust-they just break it into tiny, testable pieces. How charming!
And let’s not forget the Midnight plug. Hoskinson’s like, “Oh, by the way, this book is also a sneaky intro to Midnight,” because why not kill two birds with one stone? There’s even a whole chapter dedicated to it, in case you were wondering. But don’t worry, it’s not just about Midnight-it also dives into private smart contracts, zkVMs, STARK-to-SNARK pipelines, and other acronyms that will make your brain hurt.
Oh, and the book’s evolved faster than a meme in 2026. Originally titled The Seven-Layer Magic Trick (cute), it’s now Proving Nothing, because humility is so in right now. The latest version (v1.10, because why not?) comes in EPUB and PDF, including a 357-page dark-mode PDF for all you night owls. There are 14 chapters, with updates on zkVMs, eIDAS 2.0, rollups, and a deeper dive into Midnight. It’s like the book’s on a never-ending spa retreat, getting facelifts and upgrades.
new release for my book: Version 1.1 of Proving Nothing is out

But wait, there’s more! This isn’t your grandma’s static book. Hoskinson’s treating it like a living, breathing entity, updating it every weekend as Midnight evolves. (Because who needs weekends off when you can write about ZK proofs?) It’s less of a manifesto and more of a crypto soap opera, with new plot twists every chapter. Educational? Sure. Exhausting? Absolutely.
At press time, Cardano was trading at $0.2468, because even with a free book, the market’s still like, “Meh.”
