Police in Bakersfield, California have arrested three men for stealing around $1 million worth of LEGO products. With some LEGO sets being quite valuable and increasingly popular with adults, authorities say it was likely only a matter of time before someone tried to profit from stealing them.
LEGO sets are a favorite among dedicated builders, but popular sets can be quite expensive. For instance, models like Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard can cost up to $650, which explains how thieves could steal $1 million worth of LEGOs in a large robbery.
The Great LEGO Heist Comes to an End
The Kern County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook about an incident where deputies investigating reports of suspicious vehicles discovered stolen LEGOs. Deputies stopped two box trucks and, after searching them, found the LEGOs, along with two stolen trailers that were being transported from Fort Worth, Texas, to Moreno, California.
Following the incident, police arrested all three suspects. The Kern County Police Department believes the men stole around $1 million worth of LEGO products, but they haven’t specified which sets were taken. Photos released by the police show several pallets of packaged LEGOs, suggesting the thieves stole a wide range of items.
It’s unknown whether the LEGO sets were specifically stolen or if the thieves just grabbed whatever they could, but it’s not surprising that items related to popular hobbies like LEGO and video games are often targeted by criminals. Recently, for example, hackers stole information from Rockstar Games, exposing how much profit they’ve made from GTA 5.
LEGO enthusiasts are facing a lot of challenges lately, with both theft and resellers driving up prices. Even though many LEGO sets are already expensive, some people are buying them just to resell for a profit, making it even harder for fans to get what they want. This is especially frustrating for Pokémon fans, who are also seeing popular trading cards become difficult and costly to find due to similar issues.

Along with inflated prices, Pokémon card theft is also on the rise. In November 2025, a thief stole cards from a store owned by NFL player Tom Brady. They tricked the store’s credit card machine into thinking a normal transaction had happened, bypassing its security features.
It’s great that these LEGO sets are being returned through the correct channels, as they were likely going to be resold at a high price or end up in the wrong hands. These are highly sought-after items for resellers, and they almost certainly would have been flipped for a profit exceeding the retail price. While the Kern County Police Department hasn’t shared details about returning them to the original owner, it’s reasonable to assume that’s the plan.
