Oshi No Ko Studio Reveals New Isekai Inspired Anime Trailer With a Twist

TOHO recently released a new trailer for what’s expected to be one of the biggest anime hits this summer: Though I Am an Inept Villainess. Based on the light novel series Though I Am an Inept Villainess: Tale of the Butterfly-Rat Body Swap in the Maiden Court, this anime offers a fresh take on the popular isekai genre. Instead of sending a character to another world, Though I Am an Inept Villainess swaps the bodies of its two main characters. The anime is beautifully animated by Doga Kobo, the studio known for Oshi no Ko.

Set in a Chinese-inspired kingdom, the Crown Prince is looking for love and ready to choose the beautiful Reirin as his bride when her fellow maiden, Keigetsu, uses dark magic to switch bodies with Reirin. Unfortunately, Reirin is dying while Keigetsu is on trial for her crimes, leaving both women in extremely dangerous positions as they’re forced to navigate their new lots in life in bodies that aren’t their own.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess will stream on Crunchyroll this July.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess First Trailer Sets the Stage For a High Stakes Political Anime

The first trailer for the anime Though I Am an Inept Villainess reveals the story: young women compete to become the next Empress by winning the Crown Prince’s favor. The trailer centers around Keigetsu, who unexpectedly switches bodies with her rival, Reirin, unaware that Reirin is seriously ill. With gorgeous animation, striking visuals, and a bright color scheme, Though I Am an Inept Villainess appears to be another promising project from the studio behind Osho no Ko.

I’m really excited about the upcoming adaptation of Though I Am an Inept Villainess. It looks like it’s going to be a story with characters who really grow and change, and their relationships with each other seem complex and meaningful. The setting is a fascinating world of politics, love, and magic. We’ll see Reirin trying to survive after being reborn into the body of someone everyone sees as a criminal, completely alone. And Keigetsu is facing her own challenges – she’s dealing with a failing body while also trying to win over the Crown Prince. It sounds like a really compelling story!

The anime series Though I Am an Inept Villainess offers a unique twist on the isekai genre. Instead of a character being reborn into a new world, the story focuses on a body swap within a single, already established setting. The series features voice acting from Manaka Iwami (known for roles in Fruits Basket, Oshi no Ko, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses) as Kou Reirin, and Natsumi Kawaida (Jujutsu Kaisen, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean) as Shu Keigetsu. Mitsue Yamasaki, who has worked on popular shows like Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Fullmetal Alchemist, and the remake of Ranma ½, is directing the series.

Though I Am an Inept Villainess releases July, 2026, streaming on Crunchyroll.
