Whether you enjoy them or not, isekai anime are incredibly popular, with several new shows appearing every season. Many of these stories feature incredibly powerful main characters, and these overpowered protagonists have become a defining characteristic of the isekai genre.
Despite often being criticized for being everywhere, these shows can be incredibly fun when done right. They deliver thrilling action, engaging characters, and genuinely funny moments. While not every series is a winner, the very best isekai anime featuring overpowered main characters are definitely worth checking out.
While a good anime is important, we’re really looking at how well it handles characters who are incredibly powerful. We’ve left out shows like Mushoku Tensei because, while the main character is strong, he’s not quite at that ‘overpowered’ level.
What Actually Makes An Isekai MC “Overpowered”?
We easily recognize characters who seem unbelievably strong, but what truly makes one ‘overpowered’? Just being powerful isn’t enough – some characters can do amazing things, like destroy mountains, without actually fitting the definition of overpowered.
Isekai stories often use video game elements, especially stats, to quickly show how powerful a character is. It’s easier to understand someone is overwhelmingly strong when they have numbers that are off the charts – even stronger than most RPG bosses. Recent shows like Uglymug, Epicfighter and Chillin’ in Another World with Level 2 Super Cheat Powers frequently use this approach.
Many stories establish their main characters as exceptionally powerful by giving them unique abilities that no one else possesses. Whether a character seems overpowered depends on the specific context – they’re often strong because they operate under different circumstances than others. Some stories even give their main characters prior knowledge of their new world or what’s to come, allowing them to progress remarkably quickly. A perfect example of this is the series Villainess Level 99.
Sometimes, a story will simply grant its main character overwhelming power, making them virtually unbeatable. This is common in these kinds of narratives because the protagonist is often shielded from real consequences. They get to live out a power fantasy without any significant risks or challenges.
While these examples generally lead to the same result, they show that opportunity-based multi-criteria (OP MC) methods can vary in how they’re structured. Here’s a breakdown of the different types we’ve seen:

Let’s be honest, starting a review of I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too feels a bit indulgent, like enjoying a guilty pleasure. And it is a mess. The animation is stiff and looks even worse when things move, the characters are flat and uninteresting, and the main character is the ultimate cliché – a total underdog who suddenly becomes incredibly powerful. It’s a trope we’ve seen a lot, and this show doesn’t add anything new. In fact, it doubles down on the power fantasy by making the protagonist overpowered in two worlds, which predictably leads to a lot of girls falling for him.
While well-made shows are great, there’s a definite appeal to over-the-top, cliché-filled fantasies in the ‘isekai’ genre. I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World isn’t high art, but if you’re looking for mindless fun, it delivers. It’s enjoyable in a guilty-pleasure kind of way – and there’s something undeniably satisfying about watching an underdog become incredibly powerful and easily overcome challenges, even if it’s been done many times before.
24. I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!
An OP MC Who Can Do It All
Every so often, an anime tries to do absolutely everything, and while those shows can be chaotic, I admire their boldness. I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire is one of those shows – it’s a mix of isekai, mecha, sci-fi, and harem comedy, and that’s not an overstatement! The story follows Liam, who gets a second chance at life after a difficult period. He chooses to be reborn into a futuristic world of spaceships and robots, unaware that the being who offered him this new life actually thrives on suffering and may have set him up for a miserable existence.
The story has a bit of a problem: Liam is incredibly strong, clever, and capable, which feels unfair to the supposed challenges he faces. He takes over a failing empire and quickly becomes a major power in the universe. While many stories feature powerful main characters, Liam’s abilities are a little undefined, leading to moments where he seems to be able to do absolutely anything, even inventing magic in a world where it shouldn’t exist. Despite this, the anime is fun to watch, and the blending of different genres works well.
23. The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat
An OP MC On A Mission
Even though The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat follows a familiar isekai story formula, it stands out because of its main character, Lugh Tuatha Dé. Many isekai heroes receive incredible powers simply for being reborn, but Lugh is a highly skilled assassin who dies at the peak of his career after being betrayed. His reincarnation isn’t a gift; it’s a mission that requires his unique talents, though he does gain even greater abilities. His task? To eliminate the world’s hero, a being even more powerful than himself. Lugh is a professional, and his experience is key to completing the job.
Despite relying on familiar fantasy elements, The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated in Another World as an Aristocrat stands out because its main character, Lugh, is presented as a highly-trained operative with a specific goal, rather than a typical hero. Even his magical powers are shaped by his assassin background, as he uses scientific principles to enhance them. While the series doesn’t feature overwhelming displays of power as often as some other anime with overpowered main characters, the moments when he does unleash his abilities are particularly impactful.
22. Failure Frame: I Became the Strongest and Annihilated Everything With Low-Level Spells
Not A Great Anime, But A Fun OP MC Isekai Anime
While Failure Frame isn’t a great isekai anime overall, it excels if you’re looking for a story about a ridiculously powerful character crushing their opponents. The plot centers around a goddess who brings a class of students to another world with special abilities. Unfortunately, Touka receives a seemingly useless power with a very low chance of success. The goddess tries to get rid of him by sending him to a deadly dungeon, but she underestimates his ability: he never misses. Touka quickly becomes incredibly strong by paralyzing and poisoning waves of monsters, and eventually escapes the dungeon with a single goal: to get revenge on the goddess who wronged him.
Despite a rough animation style, unlikeable characters, and a generally cynical feel, Failure Frame has some redeeming qualities. The character Touka is particularly engaging – he’s ruthless, enjoys deceiving others, and isn’t afraid to fight unfairly, making him a fun, if not exactly heroic, main character. Plus, it’s refreshing to see a powerful protagonist who relies on status effects to win.
21. How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord
An Awkward Guy Role-Plays As His OP Character
I’m really conflicted about this anime. While How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord has some serious flaws – especially a frustrating second season that’s hard to get through – it has enough good qualities that I can still mention it. However, I’d only recommend it to fans who really enjoy overpowered main character stories in other worlds, and those who like harem anime.
I have to admit, the basic idea is surprisingly clever, even if it’s not entirely new for this kind of story. It starts with a beastgirl and an elf archer trying to summon and bind the Demon Lord, Diablo, with a contract. But things go hilariously wrong, and they end up bound to him instead. The really funny part? Diablo isn’t some powerful being at all – he’s just a regular gamer who was playing that character in a role-playing game, and he has absolutely no idea how to be a Demon Lord!
Diablo, despite trying to appear as a fearsome Demon Lord, is consistently funny, especially in the first season. While incredibly powerful, his inexperience and lack of self-assurance mean he’s never completely untouchable. The female characters, Shera and Rem, begin as fairly standard supporting characters, but they both receive good backstories and meaningful development as the story progresses.

20. Farming Life in Another World
The Most OP Farmer In Isekai Anime History
Just because an anime features a very powerful main character doesn’t automatically mean it will be filled with action. Many ‘isekai’ stories with overpowered protagonists actually focus on everyday life, with very few battles or tense moments. Farming Life in Another World is a great example of this type of show, and one I particularly enjoy. The main character, Hiraku, overworked in his past life, gets a second chance and chooses to become a farmer. He’s given a magical tool that makes farming incredibly simple, and he’s also immune to all diseases.
Hiraku isn’t as overwhelmingly powerful as the main characters in most typical isekai anime, but his skills are perfectly suited for achieving success in what he wants to do. He wouldn’t stand a chance against the other heroes we’ve talked about, but he has everything he needs to flourish in his new life, even building a thriving village of people who admire him.
19. The Water Magician
An OP MC Who Mostly Just Hangs Out In A Library
The Water Magician is a really strange story. Ryou unexpectedly dies, encounters a kind of angel, and gains the power to control water. He spends a long time training alone and eventually learns to cast spells without even speaking the magic words – a rare and impressive skill in this world. He becomes so incredibly powerful that a skilled warrior quickly recognizes him as a god-like being, warning his companions to avoid conflict with Ryou and to seek his help in emergencies.
Honestly, The Water Magician focuses more on characters other than Ryou. He mostly enjoys reading about magic at the library and doesn’t get involved much. While he does occasionally fight enemies, including a memorable battle with a demon named Leonore, he doesn’t really drive the plot. Ryou is a very powerful character who feels more like an observer than the hero of his own story.
The anime is fun to watch, but it might not fully satisfy those looking for a really powerful, over-the-top fantasy experience.
18. The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World
Exorcism in A World Of Magic
It’s easy to dismiss a show based on its title, and with so many similar isekai stories out there, it’s understandable. The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World sounds incredibly generic, and the beginning episodes don’t really change that impression. But the show actually gets much better as it goes on, becoming surprisingly good in the latter half of its single season. While it’s not a standout masterpiece, it’s better than many other isekai series you’ll find.
This anime doesn’t follow the typical trope of a regular person being reborn as a god. Instead, it places a highly skilled exorcist in a world governed by magic. Though he can’t use magic himself, the exorcist’s abilities still make him incredibly powerful, quickly surpassing most others. He tries to stay out of the spotlight, but often has to draw on his past experiences, and isn’t afraid to be tough when necessary.
17. Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest
The Rocky Road To Becoming OP
It’s tricky to recommend Arifureta as an isekai anime, because the beginning is quite weak. While later seasons improve, they don’t capture the same quality as the original light novel or manga – making the anime the least ideal way to enjoy Hajime’s story. However, if you’re looking for a popular and well-known isekai anime with a powerful main character, Arifureta is a solid choice.
Hajime was abandoned to die in a dungeon in another world, but he survived and befriended a vampire named Yue. He combines magic and weapons, like guns, to become incredibly powerful, easily defeating enemies and constantly improving his skills. He also gathers a group of strong allies, mostly women, who are capable fighters themselves.
16. My Instant Death Ability is So Overpowered, No One in This Other World Stands a Chance Against Me!
The Ultimate OP MC Isekai Anime…Is Not That Great
My Instant Death Ability feels like a direct response to those incredibly strong heroes you often see in other-world stories. A class is transported to a new world by a scheming sage, and while most students receive powerful abilities, those who don’t are simply abandoned. But one student, Yogiri, already has a unique power: he can instantly kill anything just by thinking about it. He and a female companion then embark on a low-key adventure, mostly focused on eliminating common isekai tropes before they can even cause trouble.
Yogiri from My Instant Death Ability is easily the strongest protagonist in any isekai anime ever made. While the show itself isn’t amazing and can get repetitive, it’s worth checking out if you’re looking for a funny, slightly cynical take on the isekai genre.
