Farming makes life in Windrose much easier, and it’s simple to begin! Just get some seeds and locate Fertile Soil to plant them in. Windrose actually has special blocks called Fertile Soil (which can be crafted into Seedbeds), and you’ll need these to grow crops – you can only plant bushes and trees without them. You can find Fertile Soil while exploring Foothills areas, although this can be challenging when you’re first starting the game.
Where to Find Fertile Soil in Windrose
You can find Fertile Soil by searching for Ancient Farms on islands that have the Foothills landscape. These islands can be discovered simply by sailing around, but if you’d like the game to help, complete the “Revenge is Best Served Cold” quest. This will unlock the “Needle in a Haystack” quest, which will guide you to a Foothills island.
If you’re visiting a Foothills island for the first time, it’s important to be well-prepared. Bring your strongest weapons and avoid battling enemies that are much more powerful than you.
After reaching a Foothills island, create a small campsite on the beach with a tent, bonfire, and Fast Travel Bell. If you’ve disabled Immersive Exploration in your game settings, systematically check every question mark on your map until you locate an Ancient Farm. Once you’ve found it, defeat any enemies present and then search for the seedbed – it’s typically located against a wall of the ruined structure.
Now, use your pickaxe to break apart the Fertile Soil into individual pieces. Collect every bit you can – you’ll need a lot of soil to build a farm big enough for all your seeds.
When you discover an Ancient Farm, be sure to look around the area. You’ll often find mature crops growing nearby.
How to Plant Seeds in Windrose
Now that you’ve collected Fertile Soil, return to your base and choose a location for your farm. Open the Build Menu and go to the Farming section. You’ll find the Fertile Soil and any seeds you’ve found. Select Fertile Soil to create your seedbed.
Now that your seedbed is ready, you can plant your seeds. The good news is, they don’t need any attention to grow! Simply space them out, and they’ll be ready to harvest as plants, fruits, or vegetables in a few days. Feel free to work on other things while you wait. If you’re looking for something to do, the Glorious Hunters quest is a good way to get a new musket.
You can keep using seeds! When you harvest a fully grown plant, you’ll always get one seed back. To buy seeds, purchase the Food Merchant Contract from the People of Tortuga Provisioner in Tortuga. Just remember to leave some room at your base for the merchant NPC after you get the contract.
Harvesting plants in the wild has a low chance of yielding a seed.
