Two World of Warcraft Private Servers are Shutting Down Soon

Two popular unofficial World of Warcraft servers, Turtle WoW and Stormforge, will close down in May. This follows ongoing legal pressure from Blizzard Entertainment against these types of fan-run projects.

Private, fan-made servers are common in many large online games, and World of Warcraft is no different. Many of these servers use the original game files but include changes, ranging from small tweaks to huge additions like new areas, playable races, and challenging raids. While most stay relatively unknown, some, like Turtle WoW, become quite popular. This attention unfortunately led to legal action, as Blizzard sued the creators of Turtle WoW in August 2025 for violating copyright and trademark laws.

Turtle WoW and Stormforge Project Shutting Down in May

On April 11, 2026, Blizzard successfully won a legal injunction against the private World of Warcraft server, Turtle WoW. Shortly after, on April 17th, Turtle WoW announced it would be shutting down. According to developer Torta, the servers will go offline on May 15th, but before then, players will be able to experience all the final-stage content and raids. The Turtle WoW website, forums, and social media will close permanently on October 16th.

Turtle WoW wasn’t the only private World of Warcraft server Blizzard recently shut down. The Stormforge Project announced it would also be closing on May 14, 2026. Currently, neither server is accepting new players, but both will continue to operate until their official closure dates. The Stormforge Project’s website and Discord server will also be taken offline around the same time, adding to the growing number of private WoW servers Blizzard has targeted in the past year.

The recent announcement about the Stormforge Project suggests the developers might be moving on to create their own games, separate from anything owned by Blizzard.

Could Blizzard’s Legal Action Be a Hint at Future Classic WoW Content?

This feels a lot like what happened around 2016. Back then, a popular private World of Warcraft server called Nostalrius was shut down. Similar to Turtle WoW, it was a large and well-established server for the original version of the game. Roughly a year and a half later, Blizzard officially announced Classic WoW, which eventually launched in August 2019.

The fact that Blizzard is now targeting private servers like Turtle WoW and Stormforge raises a key question: why now? These servers offer enhanced “Classic+” experiences – essentially, the original World of Warcraft with new content and improvements to make the game more enjoyable. Interestingly, the official World of Warcraft Classic team hasn’t said much lately, but they’ve hinted at a major announcement expected at BlizzCon this year. Given Blizzard’s recent actions against these popular Classic+ servers, it’s possible this announcement will be an official Classic+ project, similar to how the shutdown of Nostalrius led to the release of Classic WoW. Fans can find out for sure by watching the BlizzCon 2026 broadcasts on September 12th.
