As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the level-up systems in these games truly showcase the innovation and creativity of game developers. Each title offers a unique approach to character progression, catering to different playstyles and preferences.
In most Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs), the battle system usually involves players gaining experience points (XP) and leveling up their abilities to overcome stronger opponents, advance in the game, and uncover specific locations on the map. Enhancing skills makes it simpler to accomplish fundamental tasks and defeat tougher adversaries without having to gradually diminish their health points (HP).
Generally, Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPGs) adjust the upgrade system according to the strength of enemies in specific story segments. If characters aren’t appropriately strong or too powerful, the gameplay can either be challenging or overly simple. Many JRPGs feature intriguing progression paths and upgrade mechanisms that make character enhancement less monotonous even if it requires extended periods of grinding. Here are some excellent JRPGs where you can enhance aspects of your character’s equipment.
8. Tales of Vesperia
Skills Are Tethered To Specific Weapons
In the thrilling world of “Tales of Vesperia,” I find myself harnessing elemental attributes that significantly impact my character’s abilities. As I progress, I upgrade these skills using specific gear. The skills are ingeniously divided into four categories: offense, defense, movement, and healing. Some skills are universally learnable by all characters, while others are exclusive to certain party members. Engaging in combat rewards me with LP, which, once accumulated sufficiently, allows my characters to master new skills.
In summary, enemies usually give you three to four experience points (LP), which means defeating lower-level creatures can help players level up swiftly. To master skills on a weapon or accessory, simply equip it and dive into combat. Once enough experience points are accumulated, your character will acquire a new skill associated with that particular item.
7. Scarlet Nexus
Encourages XP Grinding At Certain Locations
In the game Scarlet Nexus, there are multiple methods for advancing your character. These include completing side missions, activating the Brain Crush XP bonus and Overkill skill, and wrapping up Bond episodes. It’s quite simple to progress in this game. Players just need to visit areas teeming with enemies, defeat them, gather their skills and Brain Points (BP). Brain Points are a crucial resource in Scarlet Nexus, much like V-Bucks are to Fortnite.
An alternative approach in playing BP is to retrace your steps to eliminate weaker adversaries following completion of the main tasks. Outstanding locations for character advancement include Hieno Mountain, various levels beneath Togetsu, and the Sumeragi Tomb.
6. Mana Khemia
The Grow Book Makes Leveling Up Less Confusing
- Platforms: PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2
- Released: June 21, 2007
- Developer: Gust
- Publishers: Gust, NIS America, Nippon Ichi Software
In the game of Mana Khemia, players can advance their characters by using a Growth Record, which enables them to master specific abilities. Furthermore, this Growth Record offers an alternate route for progression as it allows characters to enhance their HP and SP stats, apart from the traditional leveling system. There are certain regulations when employing the Growth Record. For instance, Roxis cannot acquire certain skills early in the game due to not having formed a pact with Mana yet. Yet, once his personal storyline progresses sufficiently to make this possible, he will then be eligible to learn those abilities.
Advancing or progressing means creating new items, moving towards the Skill Guidebook, and swapping Action Points (AP) for new skills. After the Skill Guidebook is accessible, players can just keep playing to become more powerful, similar to the leveling system in Final Fantasy X.
5. Chained Echoes
Numerous Methods For Earning Skill Points
In the game Chained Echoes, instead of a traditional in-game currency or unique collectibles found in many JRPGs, the method for increasing levels is through Grimoire Shards. These shards offer three types of benefits: Battle Skills, Passive Skills, and stat enhancements. Additionally, players can elevate their abilities using Skill Points, although these points are exclusively given to skills that are currently equipped.
As a thrill-seeker, I’m always on the lookout for hidden treasures, chasing Chain rewards, and sealing deals at Merchant Points – all of which help me climb the ranks by gathering Skill Points. Alternatively, once I join the Adventurer’s Guild, I can challenge mightier beasts to level up even faster!
4. Bravely Default 2
JP Bonuses Make Grinding Less Of A Hassle
In the Bravely Default series, Wiki-Wiki enemies are significant due to their tendency to grant more experience points. Additionally, orbs that offer substantial experience rewards can be discovered. At level 9 in the Freelancer job, players unlock JP Up, a skill that doubles the earned JP and reduces the amount of JP needed for leveling up jobs, resulting in a net gain. However, for all characters to profit from the JP Up ability, they must individually reach level 9 as Freelancers too.
By concentrating on the Freelancer, White Mage, and Mok jobs, you’ll find it easier and less taxing to defeat tougher opponents. This is because these roles make the grinding process more manageable. Moreover, the Dealer’s Choice ability occasionally boosts EXP and JP gains, making it worthwhile to use it every now and then.
3. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Pokemon Can Learn Dual-Type Moves & Environmental Moves
Nearly any Pokemon could star in its own JRPG due to straightforward yet potent leveling mechanics. Various Pokemon Types have the ability to learn distinct Pokemon Actions, like Electricity, Fire, Water, and Grass. While many Pokemon can grasp moves outside their type, those that align with their own type receive a bonus.
As Pokemon progress through levels by fighting and gaining experience points (XP), they acquire new moves. However, when a Pokemon evolves, it often has a broader range of moves to select from. Moves can either be acquired or discarded, altering the Pokemon’s skill set at different stages in the game. Additionally, Experience Points (EXP) can be distributed among the Pokemon in a trainer’s group using an Exp. Share.
2. Honkai Star Rail
Level Caps Keep All Party Members On The Same Page
In ‘Honkai: Star Rail’, it’s crucial to regularly boost your characters’ levels to enhance their resilience during battles. Experience points (XP) are accumulated by deploying characters in combat, but Character EXP Materials can expedite this process. When a level limit is hit, players must perform an ‘ascension’ on their character, which requires the use of specific materials to lift the level restriction.
Occasionally, you may need to finish specific Trailblaze or Equilibrium Levels first before advancing your characters. You can achieve this by accomplishing Daily Tasks and Daily Training, which reward 1450 EXP upon completion. Additionally, using Fuel when available, opening Treasure Chests, and finishing Operation Briefing tasks are other viable options.
1. Final Fantasy 13 – Lightning Returns
The Crystarium Allows Players To Customize Character’s Abilities At Will
In contrast to earlier versions of Final Fantasy 13, leveling up doesn’t follow the traditional XP system where defeating enemies awards a fixed amount of experience points. Instead, players collect points to advance classes, which is similar to the sphere grid in Final Fantasy 10 via a feature called the “Crystarium.” Characters can be designated specific roles, or “Paradigms,” and Combat Points (CP) earned from victories can be used within the Crystarium. CP can be utilized for various enhancements such as increasing HP or unlocking new skills.
Final Fantasy 13 offers players more autonomy by allowing them to decide on the upgrade of Paradigm roles and customize character stats according to their preferences. Instead of blindly leveling up characters, they have control over it, with options to specialize in areas like attacks, defenses, or healing.
