As a huge gaming fan, I’ve noticed RPGs are everywhere these days! It’s amazing how the genre just doesn’t stick to one type of game. It’s constantly changing and blending into everything else – you see RPG elements popping up in shooters, sports games, you name it! Even if a game isn’t technically an RPG, it’ll often include things like skill trees or loot, which are core to the RPG experience. It’s really cool to see!

Looking ahead to 2026, it’s obvious that the recent surge in popularity for role-playing games (RPGs) isn’t slowing down – it’s actually growing quickly. Over the past five years, RPGs have consistently been recognized as some of the best games of the year, winning the top prize three times.

This year is shaping up to be amazing for gamers, with a lot of exciting new projects on the way – everything from action-packed RPGs to relaxing and strategic adventures. These games are so good, they might just take over our free time! It’s a great time to be a fan, though our bank accounts might not think so.

9. Parasite Mutant

The Spiritual Successor We’ve Been Waiting For?

Parasite Mutant is a sci-fi horror role-playing game heavily inspired by the classic Parasite Eve, but with its own original gameplay mechanics and features.

Okay, so I’m playing this game where I’m Nova, a psychic agent. I’m sent to this totally remote, deserted island city to check things out. It starts as a pretty standard mission, but things quickly get weird. I’m uncovering secrets that are seriously changing everything for Nova – it’s way bigger than I thought!

You’ve likely noticed the game’s art style is inspired by classic 90s anime, but the most exciting part is the combat system, called ATC (Active Time Chains). It combines the traditional Active Time Battle system with a unique three-segment chain mechanic. This means players need to carefully time their moves and choose whether to use energy right away or save it for a powerful, boosted attack.

Combining a classic feel with fresh ideas, this game is a must-watch for fans of RPGs and horror when it releases on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2026.

8. Gothic 1 Remake

A Cult Classic Reborn

7. Beast of Reincarnation

Most people think of Pokémon when they hear the name Game Freak, but the company is showing it’s capable of much more! Their upcoming project, Beast of Reincarnation, planned for release in 2026, is a large-scale action RPG. It’s a departure from their usual style, setting the game in a grim, post-apocalyptic version of Japan instead of the bright world of Pokémon gyms.

In the year 4026, the game centers around Emma, a loner who’s become connected with plants because of a strange disease, and her dog, Koo. They team up to survive in a world overrun by corruption and battle terrifying monsters.

What really stood out to me was the combat. It’s a cool mix of fast-paced sword fighting with Emma and a more strategic, turn-based system for controlling Koo. If you enjoyed the innovative combat in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, this game is definitely one to watch.

The wait isn’t long! You can start playing on August 4, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

6. The Blood of Dawnwalker

A Bloody New IP

Get excited for 2026! Rebel Wolves, a new studio founded by Konrad Tomaszkiewicz (the director of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt), is releasing its first game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, later this year.

Its impressive origins alone make this game a must-play, but the details are even more exciting: it’s a dark fantasy action RPG set in a vast, open world inspired by 14th-century Europe.

The game offers a fascinating role: you can play as Regis, a vampire who secretly holds onto his humanity despite his frightening nature. Or, you can be Coen, a hero with only 30 days to rescue his family from truly terrifying vampires. Your decisions will dramatically change the story and the world around you.

The Blood of the Dawnwalker is expected to be released in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and computers.

5. Deltarune: Chapter 5

A Launch Filled with Determination

2026 promises more of the Deltarune game, and fans are incredibly grateful to Toby Fox for continuing the series! We can look forward to more adventures in both the Dark and Light Worlds, memorable music, and those eerie, enigmatic voices that always get us thinking and speculating.

Everyone is really excited about this new release. Because of mysterious hints from the creator, Toby Fox, many people believe that Chapter 5 will have a huge, surprising reveal. This twist is expected to dramatically change the direction of Chapter 6, making it unlike anything we’ve experienced so far.

It looks like we won’t have to wait much longer to find out what happens to Kris, Susie, and Ralsei in Chapter 5. The next part of the story is expected to be released sometime in 2026.

4. The Duskbloods

Miyazaki’s Brand-New Gothic Vision

Although The Duskbloods looks a lot like Bloodborne, it isn’t directly related to the game’s story or world. The only connection is that it’s being created by FromSoftware, with Hidetaka Miyazaki—the creative mind behind Bloodborne—leading the development.

This game is sure to grab the attention of any gamer, but it’s even more exciting to learn it’s a completely new series from a well-known Japanese studio, and it’s launching as a major exclusive title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

As a fan, I’m really excited about this new project! It’s a huge departure from the usual Souls games, letting you play as over ten different characters and really focusing on playing with friends. The art style is gorgeous – think hauntingly beautiful Gothic architecture – and the story sounds amazing. It’s about a mysterious plague and people who get incredible powers from this ancient, special blood. It’s a really fresh take on the formula, and I can’t wait to see more!

This feels much more story-driven and focused on characters than previous games from FromSoftware. It still has the challenging gameplay they’re known for, but with a deeper narrative, making it one of the most exciting and mysterious games coming out later this year.

Get ready to return to the world of Fable! The highly anticipated new Fable, an open-world action RPG and a revival of a beloved Xbox franchise, is now scheduled to launch in the latter half of 2026.

I’m so excited about the new Forza Horizon! From what I understand, Playground Games is basically starting from scratch with this one – it’s not a direct sequel, but a complete reboot. The director, Ralph Fulton, said they wanted total creative control to build a brand new version of the world without getting bogged down in the story from the previous games. That means they can really do anything they want, and honestly, that’s awesome!

Even though it’s a new beginning, the creators are staying true to what makes the series special: it’s a fairy tale with a distinctly British sense of humor! Instead of epic, world-threatening conflicts, the story will be more personal, focusing on how magic impacts everyday people. I’m already hooked – how about you?

This RPG, created by Chucklefish, lets you become a student at Witchbrook College, a famous school of magic. Life there is about more than just studying for tests – you’ll have a full schedule of magical adventures!

You’ll take magic classes to improve your spells, but the most important part of the game is getting to know other characters and uncovering the secrets hidden inside the magical school.

The game boasts beautiful visuals, taking place in a lively coastal town, intriguing forests, and the intricately designed grounds of the College. It’s all brought to life with the vibrant pixel art style that Chucklefish is known for.

The game creates a truly immersive and welcoming world, encouraging you to relax and enjoy the balance between school and friends. The 2026 release will be even better with online co-op, letting up to four players experience the game’s magic together.

The Rise of Kungfupunk

I got to try an early version of Phantom Blade Zero a few years back, and it instantly felt like a game-of-the-year contender. That first impression made me incredibly excited for the final release in 2026.

This game is an action RPG that takes a lot of inspiration from the fast-paced, exciting combat of Devil May Cry, but also features challenging gameplay similar to the Souls series. The developers call its look and story “kungfupunk”—an interesting mix of classic Chinese martial arts fantasy and a rough, industrial steampunk setting.

Phantom Blade Zero is a truly unique game, blending a classic feel with a futuristic setting. Its incredibly fast-paced battles and stunning visuals make it a perfect and stylish conclusion to our list of the biggest games of 2026.
