Final Fantasy 10 generally feels more serious and melancholic than other games in the series, which usually include more lighthearted moments.
Final Fantasy X creates a lingering sense of unease and foreshadowing, letting you feel that something isn’t right even before you understand the full, tragic story behind the cycle of Sin.
Look, everyone talks about Final Fantasy 7 and 9, and for good reason, but Final Fantasy 10 is seriously up there too. All these games have those moments that just wreck you emotionally, but what really gets me about FF10 is how it builds to those big hits. It’s not just sudden sadness – it’s a slow burn that makes everything feel so much more impactful when it finally happens.
10. The Destruction of Zanarkand
Let’s Start By Wiping Out an Entire City

The beginning of Final Fantasy X is striking – it starts with an exciting Blitzball match, then immediately throws you into a massive disaster. You won’t fully grasp what’s happening with Sin just yet, but this early scene powerfully demonstrates the scale of its destructive power.
The game’s beginning is a smart storytelling technique. By having Tidus just as lost and confused as the player after waking up on a boat, it allows you to discover the world with him. This creates a natural sense of mystery and subtly hints that important information is being withheld from both him and you.
9. Yuna’s Sending
A Scene That’s as Beautiful as It Is Heartbreaking

Steam
At the beginning of your adventure, you’re unfamiliar with the specifics of a Summoner’s job and their quest. You discover these things through experience as one of Yuna’s protectors. When you arrive at a village recently devastated by Sin, you find out that Summoners have the essential duty of performing a Sending.
A Sending is a special ritual performed by Summoners to help the spirits of those who have passed on reach the Farplane, a place of rest. It’s heartbreaking to realize each glowing orb represents a lost life. However, it’s equally sad to think that without Yuna and her companions, these spirits would remain lost and unable to find peace.
8. Al Bhed Hate
The Point at Which Faith and Science Collide

Final Fantasy Wiki
In Final Fantasy X, the Al Bhed are a unique people easily recognized by their spiral-shaped pupils. They’re known for their advanced technology, called machina, which is frowned upon by those who follow the teachings of Yu Yevon. You’ll spend a lot of time with Rikku, an Al Bhed character who also happens to be Yuna’s cousin.
It’s deeply ironic that the Al Bhed are hated for using machines to find a way to defeat Sin without relying on summoners. This is because those who follow Yu Yevon believe Sin exists because of the use of machines. So, you have one side trying to prevent summoners from sacrificing themselves, and another that thinks those sacrifices are preferable to using technology.
7. Yunalesca’s Fate
She Gave Up Peace for the Sake of Others
Throughout the game, people talk about Yunalesca, but you only encounter her directly near the end. Given that she was the first Summoner to defeat Sin and bring about a period of calm, it’s surprising she’s still alive. The reality is that she died after defeating Sin.
Yunalesca was the first to overcome Sin and learn the secrets of the Final Summoning. Because of this, she chose to remain in the ruined city of Zanarkand as a spirit, unable to move on. From there, she guided future Summoners who completed their journeys, teaching them about the Final Summoning so they could bring a period of peace to Spira.
6. Auron’s Fate
His Promises Tethered Him to Life
Like Yunalesca, Auron is an Unsent – a spirit who remains in the world to fulfill a vow. He promised Braska and Jecht he would carry on after their deaths, and while he opposed the traditional Final Summoning, Jecht agreed to it. This allowed Braska to defeat Sin with Jecht’s help, leaving Auron as the sole survivor of the three.
Filled with rage, Auron would lash out at Yunalesca, receiving a fatal wound in return. He lived just long enough to ensure Yuna wouldn’t be alone. It must have been incredibly painful for him to travel with Yuna and her companions, especially knowing she was heading towards the same tragic end as his friends and her father.
5. Fayth
The Fayth Aren’t as Abstract as They Seem
In Spira, Fayth are people who allow Summoners to call upon powerful beings called Aeons for assistance. Despite sometimes being mistaken for gods, Fayth were once ordinary humans. They willingly underwent a ritual to separate their souls from their bodies while still alive, and these souls were then preserved within special tablets.
Summoners undertake a pilgrimage, praying at each Chamber of the Fayth, hoping to gain the power to summon their Aeon and defeat Sin. It’s a heartbreaking journey, as the Fayth likely know the outcome – and are choosing who to aid knowing they themselves will be sacrificed.
4. The Pilgrimage
Summoners Knowingly Travel to Die

Steam
As a fan, I’ve learned that Summoners know taking down Sin isn’t a simple victory – it comes at a huge cost: their own lives. Even knowing this, when Sin shows up again after a Calm, so many Summoners still willingly go into battle. They believe that one person’s sacrifice is worth protecting everyone else and bringing back a time of peace. It’s a really powerful idea!
Most Summoners probably wish they could live a normal life and stay with their families. However, Spira has forced them to choose between their own lives and saving many others. They ultimately decided that sacrificing one life – their own – is worth protecting countless others.
3. Yu Yevon’s Religion
A Tool for Defeating Sin
The Fayth have a deep connection to the Yevon religion because Yu Yevon saved many people from Zanarkand a thousand years ago when the city faced destruction. Instead of letting them die, he transformed them into Fayth. However, Yu Yevon was also responsible for creating Sin. Even though Yunalesca managed to defeat Sin once, it kept coming back to life, using Zaon’s Aeon as its source of power.
Yunalesca, Yu Yevon’s daughter, wasn’t the founder of the Yevon religion and doesn’t know where it came from. The religion doesn’t accurately reflect historical events, but it helps both Yunalesca and the world of Spira by continuing to train Summoners who can bring about periods of peace.
2. Auron’s Knowledge
Auron Knows From the Start What’s in Zanarkand
Everyone going on the pilgrimage knows it will ultimately cost Yuna her life, but only Auron understands the complete story behind Yunalesca and the Final Summoning, including the truth about Sin. This is probably why he chooses to protect Yuna – not just because of his connection to her father, but because he hopes to find a way to alter the future.

I always felt so bad for Auron, he’s such a tragic figure. But what really struck me was that he chose to stay in Spira, even though he could have gone to the Farplane. It’s like he understood, being a Summoner himself, that someone needed to keep fighting Sin, and he was willing to stick around and do his part, even if it meant delaying his own peace. He knew his role wasn’t over yet.
1. Tidus’ Ignorance
Everybody Keeps Tidus From Knowing the Truth
Tidus finds the serious behavior of people around Summoners a bit strange, but seeing Yuna summon powerful Aeons and perform a Sending ceremony quickly shows him how vital they are to Spira. He just doesn’t yet understand the ultimate goal of a Summoner’s journey.
It’s best not to tell Tidus the truth. The others – except for Auron – believe he’s a traumatized victim of Sin, and his confused memories support that idea. Considering his feelings for Yuna, the group has quietly agreed to keep the full reality of the pilgrimage from him.
The Final Fantasy series often features characters facing incredibly sad and challenging situations, but it also delivers thrilling, action-packed moments. While there are victories throughout, Final Fantasy 10 is primarily known for its heartbreaking and tragic atmosphere.
