Open-World Games Coming in 2026 that Already Deserve Your Attention

2026 is shaping up to be an amazing year for video games, with several potential Game of the Year winners already released, including Pokémon Pokopia, Resident Evil Requiem, and Pragmata.

Despite the recent releases, there’s still plenty of time for new games to come out this year. We can look forward to titles like the third-person shooter Gears of War: E-Day, and the first-person shooter Clockwork Revolution, among others.

Okay, so there are a ton of games coming out this year, but honestly, the open-world ones are really grabbing my attention. I’m super hyped because they’re promising some seriously cool new stuff with how you actually play and how the worlds are built. Plus, some of my favorite series are getting a fresh coat of paint for today’s gaming, which is awesome!

10. Frostrail

Chugging Through a Frozen Wasteland

Lots of interesting open-world indie games have come out this year, like the relaxing van-simulator Outbound from Square Glade Games. And there are still many more to watch for, including Frostrail, a survival shooter from FakeFish.

Launching in early access before the year ends, Frostrail lets you explore the frozen ruins of a fallen empire. You can travel on foot or by train – a steam-powered vehicle you can customize – and play either by yourself or with friends online.

Frostrail combines the survival challenges of 7 Days to Die with the bleak, isolated setting of Snowpiercer. Players must carefully manage scarce resources and protect themselves from deadly cold, using a train as their main refuge. But venturing out into the frozen, ruined world means facing terrifying, supernatural zombie-like creatures.

9. Romestead

A Roman Stardew Valley

Open-world games don’t always need to be played from a first-person or typical third-person view. Some of the most interesting ones experiment with different perspectives borrowed from other game types, helping them stand out. A great example is Romestead, a 2D top-down RPG developed by Beartwigs.

In the world of Romestead, players find themselves in a ruined Roman Empire after a strange disaster. The game starts like Stardew Valley, with players focused on rebuilding by constructing buildings and farms, and forming friendships with the people who live in town.

Eventually, players will venture out from their growing settlements, either alone or with up to seven other players, to explore a vast, randomly generated world filled with mythical creatures. They’ll search for treasure in dungeons inspired by The Legend of Zelda, collect resources, and work to revive the Roman gods.

8. Dreadmoor

Fishing in Monster-Filled Swamps

The most enjoyable open-world games aren’t always the most complex. Sometimes, they shine through captivating stories and immersive worlds, or by letting players experience unique lifestyles – like being a fishing boat captain. Dream Dock’s game, Dreadmoor, falls into this category, offering gameplay that’s easy to pick up but rich in atmosphere and possibilities.

In Dreadmoor, you explore a strange, flooded world filled with swamps. You captain a fishing boat, trying to catch valuable, large fish using rods and harpoons. You’ll trade your catches at small settlements to improve your boat, unlock new gear, and learn how to craft useful items.

Okay, so as a player, you’re not exactly top of the food chain in these wetlands. You really have to watch your back! There are these huge, mutated sea creatures lurking around, and they’re not just after your hard-earned prizes – they can actually eat you if you’re not careful. And even the little bits of dry land aren’t safe, because monsters are hiding near all the supplies you need to survive. It’s pretty intense!

7. Echoes of Aincrad

Sword Art Online’s Expansive JRPG

Open-world games don’t always need completely new ideas. In fact, some of the most popular ones are based on well-known franchises, which helps them succeed. A good example is Echoes of Aincrad, the upcoming third-person JRPG from Bandai Namco and Game Studio Inc.

Based on the world of the hit anime and manga Sword Art Online, Echoes of Aincrad is a single-player RPG where you create your own SAO character and journey through Aincrad. Explore floating castles, bustling cities, and dangerous dungeons while battling fantastical monsters in fast-paced combat.

Although Echoes of Aincrad is a game you play by yourself, you won’t be completely alone. You’ll be able to travel with and build relationships with one NPC companion at a time, who will help you in battles. These companions range from powerful fighters like Zash, a master of two-handed swords, to the funny and resourceful Argo, an info broker who uses daggers.

6. Agefield High: Rock the School

A Bully-Like High School Journey

While many open-world games take place in fantastical sci-fi or fantasy settings, some of the most compelling ones feel more grounded and relatable, mirroring real-world experiences. Refugium Games’ Agefield High: Rock the School is a great example of this.

Agefield is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective, reminiscent of Bully. Players experience high school life as Sam in the year 2002, focusing on making friends, pursuing romantic interests, and dealing with rival athletes. You can choose to either excel in classes or skip them altogether.

Unlike some games, players don’t start as bullies. However, in Agefield, you can choose to be mischievous – be mean to classmates or teachers, skip class to explore, and generally cause a bit of chaos around town. It’s all about recreating your own high school experience, however you want to play it.

5. Gothic 1 Remake

Return to the Valley of Mines

While many exciting new indie games are coming out this year, we’re also seeing updated versions of beloved classics like Halo: Combat Evolved and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. One of the most awaited is the Gothic 1 Remake from Alkimia Interactive, scheduled for release in June.

The new Gothic remake is a faithful reimagining of the beloved 2001 original. It’s a medieval fantasy action RPG where you play as a prisoner in the Valley of the Mines, part of the Kingdom of Myrtana. Your mission is to locate Fire Mages and ultimately help the miners break free from a powerful magical barrier.

The original Gothic game had a big impact on role-playing games, and directly inspired the creation of The Witcher series. That makes the Gothic 1 Remake a great opportunity for fans of fantasy RPGs to play a true classic.

4. Splatoon Raiders

Exploring the Spirhalite Islands

Nintendo’s Splatoon has quickly become one of their biggest new franchises since it first appeared on the Wii U, establishing itself as a top multiplayer series. Now, the world of Inklings and Octolings is expanding into a completely different type of game: a large, open-world adventure you can play on your own.

Splatoon Raiders is a new game in the Splatoon series, and it’s coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in late July. Players will be able to create their own Inkling or Octoling character and explore the Spirhalite Islands in search of treasure this summer.

Although Splatoon Raiders is being promoted as a game you can play by yourself, you won’t have to face the challenges of the Spirhalite Islands alone. You can team up with one member of the band Deep Cut, or play with up to three other players in a harder co-op mode.

Launching in early July, Resynced is a remake of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. Players will once again experience the story of Edward Kenway, a Welsh pirate who becomes an assassin, as he seeks wealth and liberty in the West Indies during the early 1700s, sailing aboard his ship, the Jackdaw.

While largely faithful to the source material, Resynced features several improvements to Kenway’s adventure. These include removing the modern-day sequences from Black Flag, updating the ground combat to resemble that of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and introducing three new officers for the Jackdaw ship.

2. The Blood of Dawnwalker

The Witcher’s Potential Successor

Later this year, Rebel Wolves is releasing their first game, The Blood of Dawnwalker, a highly anticipated fantasy RPG with an open world. It’s shaping up to be one of the best games of the year, especially within the open-world genre.

Developed by a team of veterans from CD Projekt, the creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077, Dawnwalker tells the story of Coen, a young man living in 14th-century Europe. After becoming a Dawnwalker – a type of vampire – he must learn to control his new, limited powers to liberate his homeland from the oppressive rule of Brencis and a group of powerful, ancient vampires.

Even from the early glimpses of Dawnwalker, Little Wolves has created a game with a fascinating and intriguing story. The gameplay is just as compelling: players control Coen, who has only 30 days to save his valley and can only use his abilities at night. This forces players to carefully plan their actions and decide when and how to tackle each quest.

1. Grand Theft Auto VI

The Most Anticipated Game of 2026

Gamers are eagerly awaiting the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, the next major open-world game from Rockstar Games.

Okay, so everyone’s been waiting for GTA VI, and it’s finally happening! This time around, we’ll be playing as two main characters, Jason and Lucia. They’re a couple trying to turn over a new leaf and escape their pasts, and the whole game is set in this fictional Florida-inspired state called Leonida – so expect a lot of crime and sunshine, basically. It sounds like we’ll be building a life for them from the ground up, which is pretty cool.

Given the massive success of GTA V, there’s huge anticipation for GTA VI and the next version of GTA Online. Many believe it could be the best game of the next ten years, and other game companies are adjusting their release plans to avoid competing with it.
