7 Johto Trainers Even Stronger in the Pokemon Manga

While the original Pokémon games (Generation I) are beloved by many, Generation II holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of fans. This generation brought exciting new features like the Johto region – a beautiful setting with its own unique Pokémon – the idea of hatching Pokémon from Eggs, and even new Pokémon types. Johto is also home to memorable Trainers, including the strategic Morty, a Ghost-type expert, and Whitney, known for her incredibly strong Miltank. Players could even choose to play as either Gold or Kris, with Kris being the first female protagonist in a Pokémon game.

The manga series Pokémon Adventures, based on the original games, features many well-known Trainers from the Generation II games. While the main characters and their rivals return, the series expands on their stories and gives them new personalities. It also introduces completely original characters, like the Masked Man, whose actions have a lasting impact on the Johto region and lead to challenging battles against strong Trainers.

Eusine Seeks the Legendary Pokémon Suicune

Eusine Is Also an Old Friend of Morty

In Pokémon Crystal, players encounter Eusine, a somewhat enigmatic Trainer and a friend of Morty, the Ghost-type Gym Leader. Eusine grew up hearing stories about Suicune and is arguably its biggest fan in the Pokémon world. He actively searches for this Legendary Water-type Pokémon in Pokémon Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. However, the player character is the one who ultimately catches or defeats Suicune, not Eusine.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Eusine continues his quest to find Suicune, but his journey is interrupted by the arrival of the Masked Man, who causes trouble throughout the Johto region. Eusine then teams up with other characters to protect their home. The manga portrays Eusine as a skilled Pokémon Trainer, utilizing Pokémon like Haunter and Jumpluff in battle. When Misty couldn’t continue her pursuit of Suicune, Eusine hoped to become its partner, but Suicune ultimately chose Crystal. Despite this, Eusine remains optimistic that he and Suicune will one day battle side-by-side.

Karen Is One of the Masked Children

Karen Specializes in the Dark-type

I always found Karen to be a really interesting character in the Pokémon games. As one of the Elite Four, she’s incredibly skilled, but also seems genuinely kind. She specializes in Dark-type Pokémon, which used to be pretty intimidating back in the older games! She clearly loves that type and only uses Dark-types in her battles. What really struck me was her message to the player – she believes the idea of ‘strong’ or ‘weak’ Pokémon is wrong, and that you should battle with the Pokémon you enjoy, no matter what anyone else thinks. It’s a cool perspective.

Karen’s backstory in the manga is quite detailed. She’s one of the Masked Children, a group led by the villainous Masked Man, and unlike the others, she actually wanted to join them – she was simply bored as a child. This led to her being trained as one of the Masked Man’s strongest fighters, specializing in Dark-type Pokémon, just like in the video games. While she owns a Houndoom and several Murkrow, her most powerful Pokémon in the manga is a strong Umbreon, which was previously an Eevee.

Will Is a Master of the Psychic-type

Will Is Another Member of the Masked Children

Will is one of the powerful Indigo Elite Four members in the Generation II Pokémon games, alongside Karen. He’s presented as a Trainer who takes great pride in his strength and specializes in Psychic-type Pokémon. Will aims to be the very best Trainer globally and is thrilled to be part of the Elite Four. He’s determined to defeat the player, but even after losing, he remains hopeful and continues to pursue his dreams. His strongest Pokémon is Xatu, a bird known for its unique ability to see both the future and the past.

Similar to Karen in the manga, Will became one of the Masked Man’s followers simply because he was bored. While working for him, Will managed to control the Legendary Pokémon Lugia and guarded the Ilex Forest, preventing others from entering. However, the heroes of Kanto, with the help of the three Legendary birds, defeated Will and freed Lugia. Although Will escaped, he later found a way to make amends for his actions by the end of the story.

The Masked Man Took Control of Team Rocket

This Foe Kidnapped Children and Raised Them To Be His Servants

While many villains in the Pokémon manga also appear in the video games, the Masked Man is a character unique to Pokémon Adventures. After Team Rocket is defeated in Kanto, he takes charge of a new villainous organization in the Johto region. He’s a ruthless person who has no problem with kidnapping and brainwashing others to control them, as seen with his powerful Gastly, which can hypnotize both people and Pokémon. Besides Gastly, the Masked Man commands other strong Pokémon like Houndour, Delibird, and Ariados.

The children kidnapped by the Masked Man (with the exception of Karen and Will) were raised as his servants. However, Trainers Green and Silver managed to escape and later became famous heroes. The Masked Man’s ultimate plan was to capture the Legendary Pokémon Celebi and use its power to travel through time. Discovering the Masked Man’s identity and his motivations for wanting to time travel is a key part of the exciting story in the third manga arc.

The Pokémon series features a variety of rival characters who challenge the player in battles, and each one has a distinct personality. Some rivals, like Hop and Barry, are friendly and even grew up with the main character. Others, such as Blue and Bede, are fiercely competitive and act as antagonists. But Silver stands out as a particularly unique rival—a grumpy young Trainer who initially appears as a thief at Professor Elm’s lab, and isn’t shy about expressing his dislike for the player or even being confrontational.

Silver is the long-lost son of Giovanni, the first leader of Team Rocket, and is determined to forge his own path. Unlike the video game version, who is frustrated by Team Rocket’s shortcomings, the manga version of Silver is deeply disturbed by Giovanni’s harshness. A key part of Silver’s story unfolds in the FireRed & LeafGreen arc of the manga, where he discovers the truth about his father. The revelation shocks him, and he joins forces with other characters to defeat Giovanni and dismantle Team Rocket.

Gold Is a Troublemaker With a Compassionate Spirit

Gold, like his friend Red from Kanto, is a lively and energetic character – Professor Oak even says he’s more impulsive! He and his mother are known in their town, New Bark Town, for fostering baby Pokémon, making Gold naturally skilled at Pokémon care. He can be a bit of a troublemaker, sometimes even bending the rules to win at games like billiards or exaggerating stories. Despite his mischievous side, Gold is incredibly loyal. When his Pokémon family goes missing, he immediately sets out across Johto to find them, and his journey ultimately leads him to become a hero in the fight against the Masked Man.

During his search for lost Pokémon, Gold encounters Professor Oak, who gives him a Pokédex – one that Silver had previously taken. Like the player in the original and remade Generation II games, Gold also cares for a special Egg that hatches into a Togepi, affectionately named Togebo. Gold’s excellent Pokémon training helps Togebo grow into an exceptionally strong, though playfully troublesome, Togepi. During a battle against Arceus in the HeartGold & SoulSilver storyline, Togebo evolves first into a Togetic and then a Togekiss, using its increased power to calm the Legendary Pokémon’s anger.
