I’m incredibly excited for The Blood of Dawnwalker, especially with its release now planned for September. It seems like it could be just what I’ve been looking for since The Witcher, as it’s a large-scale, story-focused medieval fantasy RPG. What’s even more promising is that it’s being created by former CD Projekt Red developers, including the director of The Witcher 3, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz.
Beyond its impressive origins, The Blood of Dawnwalker immediately grabs your attention with a strong story and how it’s presented. You play as Coen, a simple farmer in a fantasy version of the Carpathian Mountains, whose family is kidnapped by cruel vampires. They try to turn him into one of them, but instead, he becomes a Dawnwalker – a unique being who is human during the day and a vampire at night. Motivated by rescuing his family, Coen must learn to control his new powers and fight the evil vampires who have taken over the region, preying on humans and performing dark rituals on entire cities. It’s no surprise this vampire group has made many enemies, and a large-scale war is brewing. If you plan on joining the fight, you’ll need to understand who you’re up against.
Brencis
Brencis, the leader of the powerful vampire clan known as The Blood of Dawnwalker, wasn’t always a creature of the night. He began life as Caeso Burrienus Laurentius, born into a prosperous family in Ancient Rome. He was a highly effective politician during Rome’s most prosperous period and was on track to become consul – the highest political office in the land. However, becoming a vampire tragically ended his political ambitions.
More than a thousand years have passed, and Brencis is even more determined to gain power. As the leader of Vale Sangora’s vampire rulers, he controls a large human population, most of whom are weak and defenseless against his strength. Throughout the main story of Blood of Dawnwalker, Brencis strives to become a prince, hoping to strengthen his control over humans and confirm his belief that they are naturally weaker than vampires.
Ambrus
Similar to Coen, Ambrus is a newly turned vampire – he hasn’t been one for very long, especially compared to vampires like Brencis who are centuries old. He came from a difficult background, and his human life was marked by hardship, pain, and humiliation. Though often shown in shadow and covered in blood in the trailers for The Blood of Dawnwalker, he still largely looks human, with burn scars around his mouth that may be remnants of his past suffering.
Although Ambrus’s scars aren’t always obvious on screen, concept art from The Blood of Dawnwalker confirms their existence.
Ambrus is a powerful ally of Brencis, and he manages the blood trade throughout Vale Sangora – essentially trafficking humans for their blood. He’s young and ambitious, wanting to impress Brencis and make a name for himself, which makes him both efficient and reckless in his work. Currently, he appears to be a good contrast to Coen: a new vampire with big plans, but one who uses his powers for selfish and harmful purposes instead of good. He might be overcompensating for his ordinary life before becoming a vampire, or perhaps he’s repeating a pattern of abuse he once experienced.
Bakir
Judging by his clothing, Bakir probably came from the Hun people before becoming a vampire. This is notable because, like Brencis, he was part of a harsh and demanding society even before his transformation. The Huns, similar to the Mongols, conquered large parts of Central Asia in the fourth and fifth centuries. However, he’s likely not Mongolian, as he’s been a vampire for centuries, and the Mongolian Empire didn’t fully form until about a hundred years before the events of The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Bakir is a terrifying character, and even before he became a vampire, he craved violence. For centuries, he was prevented from indulging his violent desires, but now he sees Brencis’ mission as a chance to regain his power. However, his desire for the spotlight – as noted in his character profile – might create conflict between them. He enjoys being the center of attention, and his ambitions could clash with Brencis’.
Bakir’s motion capture is being performed by Jan Błachowicz, a former UFC champion.
Xanthe
With Brencis as the established leader, Ambrus as the newcomer, and Bakir as the powerful fighter, Xanthe fills the role of the group’s mystic. As the oldest of the vampires, Xanthe comes from an ancient Greek island where she once served as a priestess. This history suggests she was deeply spiritual before becoming a vampire, which could explain her somewhat detached view of the world.
Xanthe, like Brencis, looks more like a monster than a person, with constantly growing fangs and decaying skin. This makes her a truly frightening and unpleasant sight. She’s also detached from human feelings and spirituality, appearing to exist beyond the normal world—perhaps hinting at what vampires become after centuries of unlife. Xanthe claims to hear voices from another realm and seems to grasp the fundamental truths of existence better than anyone. This makes her a compelling character who could allow The Blood of Dawnwalker to delve into complex ideas and questions about life and what lies beyond.
As you play the game, you’ll discover a lot more about these characters. Brencis’ followers are central to the story and how the game is played. Because the story isn’t told in a straight line, you’ll be able to learn about these villains in detail through quests and activities that offer compelling narrative experiences. They seem like a powerful and intimidating group, so it will be fascinating to uncover their motivations—and likely defeat them in the process.
