Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Will Not Feature Levels or Gear Scores

Originally, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag was a refreshing change to a series that felt repetitive. Now, with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the developers are going back to its roots by removing the role-playing elements – like character levels and gear upgrades – that have been part of Assassin’s Creed games for nearly ten years. Ubisoft intends to keep what fans enjoyed about the original while updating it for today’s gamers, bringing a beloved classic up to modern standards.

As a long-time fan, I’ve watched the Assassin’s Creed series change a lot over the last decade. Ubisoft started adding RPG stuff – levels, gear, all that – which was a big shift from the action-adventure games we all loved since 2007. When Odyssey came out in 2018, it felt like a really fresh take, and a lot of us thought it fixed a formula that was starting to feel a little stale. But now, with each new game, I think a lot of fans – and critics – are starting to feel like they’ve gone too far with the RPG elements. Games like Odyssey and Valhalla just feel…overstuffed, honestly. It’s lost some of what made Assassin’s Creed special, in my opinion.

Ubisoft Wants Fans to Know Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Is Not an RPG

Okay, so I was a little worried when I heard about Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced – would they mess with the original and add all those RPG elements we see in the newer games? Well, Ubisoft has confirmed it’s staying true to the original! No leveling up, no gear scores, and thankfully, no progression gates to slow things down. I saw a post on the Assassin’s Creed subreddit where they specifically said this. They have revamped the combat with a new defense system and health bars, and you can customize the HUD now, which is cool. But they’re really emphasizing that this is still a classic action-adventure game at heart, and I’m totally relieved to hear that!

Ubisoft also notes that even the health and defense bars from previous games will be optional. While you won’t be able to turn off the new defense system completely in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, you can largely hide its visual indicators thanks to extensive HUD customization options. Like Shadows, the remake allows full UI control, offering “Simple” and “Minimal” HUD presets, or the choice to play with no HUD at all.

Ubisoft appears to be deliberately moving away from the style of recent Assassin’s Creed games like Valhalla and Odyssey. Games like Assassin’s Creed Mirage have been promoted as a return to the series’ roots, and the team working on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced emphasizes that it will be an action-adventure game staying true to the original AC formula. It’s unclear what this shift means for the future direction of the Assassin’s Creed series.

Ubisoft plans to create more remakes of classic Assassin’s Creed games, and the early look at Resynced suggests they’ll stay true to the original style. However, they aren’t limited to following old rules with new games. Assassin’s Creed Hexe could bring back the action-adventure gameplay that made the series popular initially. But Ubisoft might also continue using the leveling, gear, and progression systems that have proven successful and profitable for Assassin’s Creed in recent years. It’s possible that the older, skill-based combat—focused on dodging and parrying—will be reserved for remakes and spin-off titles in the future.
