Marathon is updating its WSTR Combat Shotgun, a powerful close-range weapon, and making several changes to the Cryo Archive map. While it didn’t immediately revolutionize the extraction shooter genre, Marathon is consistently improving and proving to be a durable and distinctive game.
By April 2026, most of the developers at Bungie will be focused on their new game, Marathon, rather than continuing work on Destiny 2. This means Marathon will likely see consistent improvements, though Destiny 2 fans might not be thrilled. It’s understandable that the team would gradually shift its focus, and while this update to Destiny 2 is relatively small, it still includes important changes. You likely won’t notice a huge difference right away.
Good news for WSTR Combat Shotgun users: it won’t be weakened as much as the Biotoxic Disinjector was in Marathon. Instead, Bungie is making a very specific adjustment to the weapon. They’re slightly increasing its damage and range, while also reducing its critical hit damage. More importantly, the WSTR will now deal 75% more damage to AI enemies, suggesting Bungie wants it to be especially effective against them. The weapon’s MIPS Slug Converter Prestige mod is also getting changes: a significant boost to critical hit damage (from 1.15x to 1.9x), but with increased bullet drop, slower projectile speed, and a smaller aim assist window.
The Marathon activity concludes on the Cryo Archive map, so Bungie’s recent adjustments to it aren’t unexpected. A recent update started addressing issues where players could bypass security doors without the proper authorization, and they’ve now added vent covers in the Biostock and Preservation areas to prevent early access. Bungie will continue to monitor the map to ensure fair gameplay. With update 1.0.6.2, players now need Security Clearance 1 to open vents if they enter through Biostock or Preservation, making the early stages of the Cryo Archive a bit more secure.

Update 1.0.6.2 isn’t as large as the April update, but it demonstrates Bungie is carefully considering how to balance the game. The changes to the WSTR weapon are particularly well-done, refining its role without overly weakening it. While these adjustments look promising, their true impact will be seen with real player use. The community is known for finding creative ways to push game mechanics, so further adjustments to WSTR may still be needed.
Although Marathon is a big change for the series, it still clearly carries the strange, unsettling atmosphere that defined the original Marathon games. Bungie has faced challenges recently, particularly with the direction of Destiny 2, so it’s encouraging to see that their new major game is being developed thoughtfully, respecting both new players and the history of the franchise.
