Final Fantasy XIV Evercold: Everything You Need to Know Before the Next Expansion Drops

Last week, Final Fantasy 14 revealed its next expansion, titled Evercold, scheduled for release in January 2026. The developers at Square Enix also released a trailer, showing players will explore the icy lands of The Fourth in the new content.

Along with this news, the game has just been updated with patch 7.5, marking the end of the story arc in the city of Tural and introducing our next major adventure. Square Enix has announced one last main story patch, 7.56, scheduled for release on September 8, 2026. However, the latest quests have already explained where we’re going next – The Fourth – and how we’ll get there.

Fans have been eager for answers since the Endwalker expansion, and it looks like Evercold will deliver. We might finally learn how the worlds are reacting to the deaths of Zodiark and Hydaelyn, what happened to the five Ascians we haven’t met yet, and if Jonathan Bailey will continue to voice G’Raha Tia—good news, he will!

Until we learn more about Evercold and how it fits into the Final Fantasy 14 story, it’s hard to say exactly how everything will come together. But if you want a refresher before continuing the game, here’s a breakdown of what you need to remember.

What is Evercold About?

The next big update to Final Fantasy 14, called Evercold, will likely take players to a frozen world called The Fourth Reflection. Its people have been forced to live in the sky, and the land is now inhabited by enormous giants who appear to be a new threat. Many players believe we’ll be tasked with saving this world, similar to the story in the Shadowbringers expansion.

Evercold seems primed to answer long-awaited questions fans have been asking since Endwalker.

The upcoming expansion seems heavily inspired by Norse mythology, as seen in the trailer. We spot traditional Norse longships called Dreki, and the architecture also reflects this style. A quick scene shows an Au’Ra character with one eye, possibly hinting at a connection to the Norse god Odin.

The upcoming Evercold expansion for Final Fantasy 14 will introduce two brand new jobs. Many players believe these jobs will be themed around Vikings and Rangers, based on the expansion’s setting. We’ll get official details about the first job at FanFest in Berlin, Germany, on July 25th.

How Does Dawntrail Tie Into Evercold?

The Dawntrail expansion was initially presented as a relaxing escape, a chance to refresh the game world after the long storyline that began with A Realm Reborn. However, this peaceful interlude was quickly disrupted by the arrival of The Ninth Reflection in Tural and the ensuing war with the Endless.

The people of The Ninth described a world shattered by a devastating electrical storm. The survivors of the kingdom of Alexandria were forced to rely on advanced technology to endure. This included devices called “regulators” that controlled lifespans, preserving the souls of the dead to sustain the living. They also created the “Endless” – ethereal beings existing within a digital afterlife known as the Living Memory.

It’s curious that ice is the natural opposite of lightning, suggesting that the worlds connected to The Ninth and The Fourth might eventually help each other recover.

We later found out that the Ninth Reflection arrived in our world by opening a portal between dimensions, merging Solution 9 with the countryside of Tural. We haven’t yet figured out how to reach The Fourth, but we expect to discover the way either in the next major story update or soon after the expansion is released.

How Does Patch 7.5 Lead Into Evercold?

We’re still waiting on a small update, which will lead directly into the Evercold content. But we have a solid plan for how players will reach the Fourth area.

Okay, so in the latest update, we finally met Halmarut, one of the last Ascians! It was super intense. She basically told us that now that Hydaelyn and Zodiark are gone, all the remaining ‘reflections’ – like, all of us – are heading for a massive collision with something called ‘The Source’. Apparently, this would be way worse than anything the Ascians tried to do, and it would completely wipe out humanity across all the reflections. She called it ‘The Solstice’, and honestly, it sounds terrifying!

The group realized Halmarut and Calyx intended to force the worlds back together too soon, understanding that while many would perish, a small number would live. After briefly displaying Zenos’ scythe, they left, allowing the others to figure out their next steps.

Calyx met with the group in Mor Dhona and explained that he and Halmarut intend to journey to the Fourth. While it’s unclear why this is significant to them, many players believe the next expansion might involve creating our own Yggdrasil. This could potentially link all the reflections together, and might even be how Halmarut attempts to prematurely rejoin them.

Who are the Winterers?

I’ve been following the new Dawntrail content, and I’m really intrigued by this group called the Winterers. They seem to be focused on surviving something called the ‘rejoining,’ but they’re pretty secretive about it all. Right now, we only know two of them: Calyx and Halmalut, and honestly, they’ve been causing a lot of trouble for us lately!

The idea of ‘wintering’ – finding shelter and gathering supplies for the cold season – strongly connects to the Evercold group and their goal of surviving the coming crisis. This connection is echoed in Norse mythology, where the death of Baldur brings about a harsh, unending winter (Fimbulwinter) that leads to the world’s end, Ragnarök. However, two people, LĂf and LĂfĂŸrasir, survive Ragnarök by sheltering inside the world tree, Yggdrasil. This could be a hint about what the Winterers are planning to do – finding a safe haven to ride out the catastrophe.

Beyond this, details about the group are largely guesswork. Fans theorize they might be connected to the still-unexplored nation of Meracydia. Reports received after Calyx’s apparent death suggest the Winterers are actually made up of several different groups, all seeking a way to prevent the coming Solstice.

Okay, so from what I’m gathering, things are going to get interesting in Evercold. It looks like my Scions are either going to end up fighting the Winterers, or we’re going to have to team up if everyone’s shards are going to make it. It’s looking like a tough choice – war or an uneasy alliance!

What Other Reflections Have We Seen So Far?

Our hero has journeyed to both The First and The Thirteenth, experiencing their unique worlds. We’ve also had a glimpse of The Ninth, as a small piece of it was brought into ours.

In the Shadowbringers expansion, our main goal was to defeat creatures called Sineaters and heal the land, bringing life back to the world. This led to the Eden raid series, where we used a powerful machine to bring elemental energy back to a desolate place called “The Empty” and fight against an overwhelming force of light. Through challenging battles against reimagined versions of powerful beings called Primals, we were able to restore balance and set the world on the road to recovery.

After the Endwalker expansion, we found a way to travel to the Thirteenth Shard, the origin of many of the Voidsent. There, we encountered the voidsent named Zero and began the gradual work of restoring the shard.

In the Dawntrail expansion, a fragment of another world will arrive and immediately attempt to drain our world’s energy to sustain itself. We discover this fragment, originating from the Endless Sphene, is part of a plan to travel between worlds, absorbing their life force to ensure the survival of her people. Since this would destroy all life on every world it touches, we will be forced to shut down the Meso Terminal. This will contain the “Endless” and prevent Living Memory from draining our world’s energy.

After the recent update, players encounter Ethos, a special key that unlocks portals to alternate versions of the world. While its origins are still a mystery, it seems connected to the character Azem. Soon, players will get a chance to try out Ethos by revisiting the Thirteenth, where they’ll team up with Golbez and Zero to defend against an incoming attack from the Voidsent.

So, I found out those Ethos gateways are pretty exclusive – only the person with the key can actually see them. It’s still a mystery how Estinien and Alphinaud managed to come with me to the Fourth, but I’m guessing we’ll find out in the next update or when Evercold kicks off. I’m definitely curious to see how they explain it!
