All Features Confirmed for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight So Far

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight looks to be the biggest and most exciting LEGO game yet. It combines a huge, open world to explore with a story that covers Batman’s entire history, which is a really new direction for the series. With the game launching on May 22nd, it’s hard not to get hyped!

As a huge Batman fan, I was really excited to hear DC’s Jim Lee call the new game a total love letter to the Batman universe, and honestly, everything they’ve shown so far backs that up. The coolest part? TT Games is using Unreal Engine 5 for the first time, which means Gotham is looking incredibly detailed and should run really smoothly. Seriously, there’s a lot coming in this game, so mark your calendars for May 22nd – you’re gonna want to take notes, just like Batman always plans ahead!

A Story That Covers Batman’s Full Legacy

Unlike previous LEGO Batman games that focus on a single story, Legacy of the Dark Knight tells Bruce Wayne’s complete story, from his training with the League of Shadows to becoming the Batman we know today. The game draws on classic moments from Batman movies, TV shows, comics, and video games to create what TT Games calls the ultimate Batman experience. It blends decades of Batman history into one connected story, all while keeping the fun, lighthearted LEGO humor that the studio is known for.

A compelling story and a fantastic cast of villains are central to LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. Players will face off against iconic foes like the Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Ra’s al Ghul, Bane, and Mister Freeze. The game’s version of the Joker is particularly interesting, drawing inspiration from different portrayals of the character – from the flamboyant style of Jack Nicholson to the darker, more realistic version played by Heath Ledger – and even exploring his roots in classic comic book storylines as the Red Hood gang. Harley Quinn is also a key character, although her playable content will be released after the game’s initial launch as downloadable content.

An Open-World Gotham City Packed With Things to Do

The game, Legacy of the Dark Knight, is set in a large, open-world version of Gotham City. The city is divided into four separate areas, each filled with crimes to investigate, puzzles to figure out, and hidden secrets. Players will be able to explore iconic locations like Arkham Asylum, Ace Chemicals, Wayne Tower, and the Gotham Botanical Gardens, making the city feel true to the Batman universe. These activities outside the main story suggest there will be a lot for players to do and discover.

  • Stopping street crimes
  • Solving environmental puzzles
  • Rooftop traversal challenges
  • Collectible hunting
  • Side challenges

Exploring Gotham in this game offers a lot of different ways to get around. Players can use Batman’s grapple to quickly move between buildings, glide through the air with the Batglider, or drive a variety of Batmobiles and Batcycles – including the iconic Tumbler from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. The Batpod (from The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises) will also be available, along with a Batmobile inspired by the animated series and a stylish muscle car similar to the one Robert Pattinson drives. With even more customization options still to be revealed, the game provides a dynamic and varied experience as you travel the open world.

Seven Playable Characters and All-New Ways to Play

Unlike previous LEGO games with huge character lists, LEGO Legacy of the Dark Knight focuses on a smaller, more carefully chosen group of heroes and villains. Currently, the game features seven playable characters: Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Each character has their own special abilities, gadgets, and fighting style, reflecting who they are in the Batman universe.

More Games

The game features a revamped combat system inspired by the Batman: Arkham series, but made easier to pick up and play. Players will experience smooth attack combos, counter moves, and unique LEGO-style takedowns for each character. Beyond fighting, Legacy of the Dark Knight also lets players investigate as Batman, using detective skills and stealth. Characters like Batgirl have special abilities, such as hacking, to help solve puzzles and bypass obstacles.

New Gameplay Features Like Co-Op and Difficulty Options

Legacy of the Dark Knight lets two players team up locally, a feature fans have always loved for playing with family and friends. The game also includes a range of difficulty settings. Players familiar with LEGO games can enjoy the Classic difficulty, while the Caped Crusader difficulty offers a tougher experience. And for a truly demanding challenge, the Dark Knight difficulty will really put your skills to the test with the new combat system.

All-Out Customization: Batcave, Vehicles, Suits, and More

One of the best parts of the game is how much you can customize things. The Batcave, in particular, is a central hub that changes and grows as you play. When you first find it, it’s empty and basic, but it slowly becomes a fully-equipped fortress as you progress through the story. You’ll unlock a WayneTech computer to revisit missions and a terminal to improve Batman’s skills.

Players can personalize the Batcave with lots of cool items that aren’t just for show – they actually do things! You’ll be able to display different Batmobiles, show off trophies and collectibles, and decorate with props. Plus, you can unlock and wear different Batsuits and cosmetics inspired by key moments in the game. Many of these items and suits can be bought in the in-game Bat-Mite Shop, giving you something to work towards even after you finish the main story.

One of the highlights of Legacy of the Dark Knight is its extensive collection of Batsuits, with a total of 100 different outfits available for all characters who can be played. So far, developers have confirmed numerous variations of Batman’s suit alone, including:

  • Golden Age Batsuit (inspired by Detective Comics #27, 1939)
  • The Dark Knight Returns suit
  • Batman Beyond content
  • Arkham-inspired cosmetics
  • Comic-era Batman variants
  • Film-inspired costumes (spanning the Adam West, Michael Keaton, and Robert Pattinson eras)
  • Batman Ninja variant
  • Novelty suits, including a rainbow variant and a pirate outfit

The game features a huge selection of vehicles, including several different Batmobiles and Batcycles, which you can drive around the open world and see on display in the Batcave. More Batmobile versions will be added as downloadable content, and if you buy official LEGO Batman sets coming out in early 2026, you’ll be able to unlock golden versions of certain vehicles.

DLC Content and Pre-Order Bonuses

If you pre-order LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, or purchase the deluxe edition, you’ll receive the iconic “The Dark Knight Returns” Batsuit at launch – a popular costume based on Frank Miller’s famous 1986 comic. Players with or who create a WB Games account can also unlock the Golden Age Batsuit at launch, a classic look inspired by Batman’s debut in Detective Comics #27 back in 1939. The deluxe edition pre-order offers even more, and here’s a complete list of what’s included:

  • 72-hour early access (starting May 19, 2026)
  • The Dark Knight Returns Batsuit (pre-order bonus, all editions)
  • Legacy Collection DLC: Arkham Trilogy Pack, Batman Beyond Pack, and Party Music Pack
  • Mayhem Collection DLC (September 2026): Joker and Harley Quinn story mission, Mayhem Mode with both characters as playable, plus the Sinister Pack (7 suits, 1 Batmobile, 1 Batcave prop set)
  • Extra Batcave props, additional vehicles, and additional suits across all playable characters

Legacy of the Dark Knight Might Be the Most Expansive Batman Game Ever

As a huge Batman and LEGO Games fan, I’m seriously hyped for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight! It looks like TT Games is really going all-out with a story-focused campaign, a massive, detailed Gotham City to explore, and a ton of unique characters. Honestly, they’ve revealed so much content – it’s almost hard to keep track of! Considering how long this series has been around and how they’ve perfected their style, this feels like it could be a really special game. We’ll see if it lives up to the hype, but everything I’ve seen so far makes me think this will be a must-play when it comes out on May 22nd.
