Jujutsu Kaisen is a standout dark fantasy anime in recent years. The creator, Gege Akutami, has built a story that’s genuinely unsettling and keeps you constantly worried about the characters. It’s a series where anyone can die – there’s very little protection for your favorites, with the exception of the main character, Yuji.
I definitely enjoy Jujutsu Kaisen, but I don’t think it’s the absolute best dark fantasy anime out there. There are actually a lot of other series that I think handle the genre even better, and I wanted to share a few of my favorites.
Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor
If you enjoy anime with intriguing concepts, this series will grab your attention. Unlike many recent dark fantasy anime that rely on dark imagery without truly exploring difficult themes, Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor dares to be different. It doesn’t shy away from harsh realities, delivering a story packed with disturbing scenes and a truly terrifying enemy that feels more menacing than any typical villain.
This anime takes place in a seemingly perfect world, but a sinister organization called Chronos operates in secret. They create Zoanoids – beings who can transform into dangerous creatures. When one Zoanoid escapes with three vital Guyver units and sacrifices himself, the units are scattered. Eventually, high school students Shō Fukamachi and Tetsurō Segawa find one of these units, and Shō merges with it, becoming the powerful Guyver I. Chronos then dispatches Zoanoids to capture Shō, by any means necessary.
Dororo
Compared to many modern dark fantasy shows, Dororo stands out because it focuses less on spooky settings and monsters, and more on the terrifying actions of people and their poor choices. At its heart, Dororo is a story about a protagonist fighting to live in a world that rejects him, and a father who made a terrible sacrifice – giving up his own son – to protect his land. While Jujutsu Kaisen delivered exciting battles and cool demons, Dororo offers a story that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The story of Dororo begins with a ruthless lord who made a deal with demons: he sacrificed his unborn child’s body parts for power and riches. The baby was born severely deformed, lacking skin, eyes, a nose, a mouth, and a voice. Though the lord tried to kill him, the infant lived, and a doctor took him in, teaching him how to survive. The doctor named him Hyakkimaru. As Hyakkimaru grew, he became a skilled warrior driven by a single purpose: to destroy the demons and reclaim what they stole from him.
Claymore
Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Claymore are dark fantasy anime, but they offer very different experiences. Jujutsu Kaisen blends a refined story with humor and quirky characters, while Claymore is grittier, focusing on a compelling cast and a truly epic story. Claymore doesn’t rely on flashy action or comedy; it’s a somber exploration of hardship and survival. Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, where characters temporarily sacrifice themselves for power, Claymore depicts a gradual, permanent loss of humanity with each level gained.
The story of Claymore unfolds in a world plagued by Yoma – shapeshifting monsters who disguise themselves as humans before attacking. To combat this threat, a clandestine organization creates Claymores – warriors who are half-human and half-Yoma, giving them a natural advantage in battle. But there’s a catch: each time a Claymore uses their powers, they risk losing their own humanity.
Bastard!!
The anime series Bastard!! is intensely disturbing, pushing boundaries and delving into truly dark territory. While Jujutsu Kaisen also explores dark themes, it maintains a sense of morality that’s completely absent in Bastard!!. This anime is relentlessly brutal and doesn’t shy away from chaos and extreme darkness. JJK’s characters generally understand the difference between right and wrong, but Bastard!! lacks this distinction, making it far more unsettling to watch.
I’ve been watching this series about Dark Schneider, who used to rule the Kingdom of Metallicana. He was so powerful and feared that a high priest sealed him inside the body of a fifteen-year-old boy named Lucien Renlen. The interesting thing is, whenever the kingdom faced a crisis, Yoko – the priest’s daughter – would awaken Dark Schneider with a kiss. He’d then take over Lucien’s body and just demolish any enemy that stood before him. It’s basically a story of him going from one incredibly tough battle to the next, and always winning with overwhelming force.
Drifters
Drifters is a wildly chaotic anime that just keeps escalating. Unlike Jujutsu Kaisen, it doesn’t give the story or characters much room to develop, and things get more complicated with every episode. If you enjoy intense, dramatic stories, Drifters is definitely worth checking out. It’s not a simple good versus evil story; instead, it’s a violent and unpredictable tale where characters operate in a moral gray area.

The story begins with Shimazu Toyohisa, a warrior fighting in a fierce battle. Though he defeats his enemies, he’s seriously wounded in the process. As he attempts to escape the battlefield, he’s suddenly transported to a mysterious hallway and then to another world entirely. There, he encounters famous warriors from throughout history. They’ve all been brought to this strange world to join a team called the Drifters, whose mission is to fight against the Ends – a group determined to wipe out humanity.
Berserk
Both Jujutsu Kaisen (JJK) and Berserk are dark anime, but Berserk is relentlessly grim. While JJK offers some moments of levity and a structured narrative to provide balance, Berserk doesn’t hold back with its suffering and unfair world. If you’re already a fan of Berserk, you know what to expect. But for new viewers, be prepared for a consistently uncomfortable experience – it doesn’t offer the same balance of dark and light as many popular modern anime like JJK.
Berserk centers around Guts, a lone warrior who has known only hardship and fighting since childhood. His life changes when he’s recruited by the charismatic leader, Griffith, to join the Band of the Hawk. What begins as an inspiring story of ambition and camaraderie quickly takes a dark and unexpected turn.
