Pokemon’s Gen 10 Plans Are Missing a Very Important Part of the Franchise Formula

After the first trailer for Pokemon Winds and Waves and Generation 10 was released, official news has been scarce. However, several leaks have appeared online, detailing what to expect from the games – and even future installments. For example, a map supposedly showing the entire region for Pokemon Winds and Waves has been circulating for days, revealing locations, environments, and Gyms. Beyond Winds and Waves, leaks have also described games currently being developed or planned for the series.

The recent leak wasn’t much of a surprise, considering rumors about a new Pokemon Winds and Waves game have been circulating for years. Last year’s major leak even showed early ideas for a Pokemon Legends game set in the Galar region. According to this information, work on the next generation, Gen 11, is already starting, demonstrating how far ahead Nintendo is planning. Interestingly, current plans for Gen 10 don’t appear to include any remakes. While many expected a remake after Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl were developed by ILCA, this suggests that a Gen 5 remake isn’t currently in the works.

It’s The End of an Era for Pokemon Games

Remaking older games has always been a popular trend in the Pokémon series, and many fans were hoping to see a remake of the Generation 5 games. This anticipation continued throughout the entire lifespan of Generation 9. Expectations were high for a Gen 5 remake following the Gen 4 remakes, but it never happened. While the Indigo Disk expansion included references to the Unova region and Gen 5, it wasn’t a full remake of those games.

More Games

According to information obtained by Centro Leaks, Game Freak is currently fully developing four games, with two more in the early stages of planning.

  • Pokemon Winds and Waves (full production, rumored to be finished)
  • Pokemon Pokopia DLC, with Omega Force co-developing it (full production, rumored to launch between the end of 2026 and the start of 2027)
  • Pokemon Winds and Waves DLC (full production, most likely a 2028 release)
  • Pokemon Legends Galar game, if the TeraLeak documents are true (full production, could be a 2028 or 2029 release)
  • Pokemon Project Seed, an MMO game with the four Japanese regions so far (pre-production, was detailed in the TeraLeak)
  • Pokemon Gen 11 (pre-production)

If the recent leaks are accurate, we can expect Pokemon Winds and Waves to release in late 2027. The leaks also suggest we won’t hear any official news about the game this year. This implies that the Pokemon Company is planning games several years in advance – potentially up to 2031 or even beyond. While the lack of announced remakes doesn’t completely rule them out in the future, it makes their return seem improbable.

Say Goodbye to Pokemon Gen 5 Remakes

If the recent leak is accurate, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that we’ll ever get remakes of the fifth generation of Pokémon. Here’s why:

  • Considering that Pokemon BDSP‘s reception was very poor, it’s unlikely that future remakes will be outsourced again, risking the same fate.
  • Pokemon Gen 5 remakes were not part of the TeraLeak, nor were they part of any recent leak from proven sources.
  • Pokemon remakes are typically released in between major games to ease the wait for them while also reviving older regions. The fact that no remakes are currently in the works or have been announced gives more credence to their discontinuation.
  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Evolutions allowed Game Freak to explore an older region and battle gimmick without relying on remakes, so future Legends games may end up covering Gen 5 and do away with remakes.

The good news about future Pokémon remakes is that they’ll likely be developed by a studio other than Game Freak, even though the last remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, weren’t a huge success. This is why we aren’t seeing remake projects currently announced. While remakes made directly by Game Freak aren’t entirely off the table, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely. So, if you’re hoping for remakes or sequels to Pokémon Black and White, it’s best to keep your hopes realistic.
