He’s focused on finding a new apprentice, which might seem like dedication to the Sith’s traditional master-apprentice pairing, but it’s actually driven by his grief and a need to find someone who understands him.

The impact of Savage Opress is strongly felt in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, Season 1, Episode 8, “The Creeping Fear.” Having narrowly avoided the First and Eleventh Brothers, Maul is haunted by Marrok’s words: “There is no surrender for you. Maul remembers Savage rescuing him after Sidious discarded him, and he relives Savage’s death, orchestrated by Sidious, with Savage’s final words – a demand for revenge – resonating deeply.

Haunted by memories of his past, Maul finally understands who his real enemy is: Darth Sidious. He realizes Sidious destroyed everything he loved – his home, his family, and even his brother – and vows revenge, stating, “You did this to me.” Seeing a younger version of himself fuels his determination, and he promises, “I won’t let him do this to anyone else.” This newfound purpose gives him the strength to continue fighting and rejoin his allies.

“The Creeping Fear” emphasizes how crucial Savage Opress was to Darth Maul’s journey. Maul deeply mourns the loss of his brother, and continues to search for the sense of family and connection that was lost with Savage’s death.
