A Steam Deck owner has completely reimagined their device, building a new case for it that looks like the Nintendo DS using a 3D printer. Valve encourages players to modify and customize their Steam Decks, and this impressive fan-made project is a perfect example of that community spirit.
While Valve is developing a Steam Deck 2, it won’t be available for a while. Right now, the company is focusing on its Steam Machine and Steam Frame products. A major obstacle is the ongoing shortage of memory chips, which makes it difficult to predict when any new hardware will be released. In the meantime, fans are getting creative – and one modder has already come up with some interesting new gear.
The Steam Deck Can Be Reworked Into a Nintendo DS-Style Clamshell
A Reddit user named MadMario0_0, also known as Pixel Nerd, has transformed their original Steam Deck into a handheld device resembling the classic Nintendo DS. The DS was incredibly popular and inspired many similar gadgets, but Pixel Nerd shows that the Steam Deck itself can be reimagined in the same way. They meticulously reused every original Steam Deck component, fitting them into a custom, bright pink case 3D-printed from PETG plastic. The only exception was the thumbsticks, which were swapped for Adafruit Joy-Cons because they were too bulky.
Pixel Nerd spent about a year designing and building this project, and they’ve even shared it with Valve. They described it as a labor of love, built purely for the fun of it. Currently, there are no plans to sell it, which makes sense considering how hard it is to get a Steam Deck. However, if enough people show interest, Pixel Nerd might consider creating conversion kits. The main thing is that they’ve proven the concept works – every feature, including the gyroscope, functions perfectly.
Pixel Nerd’s project is especially noteworthy because iFixit also sells many individual parts for the Steam Deck. While you can’t get the main circuit board, components like SSDs, screens, speakers, and batteries are available at good prices. This means you can experiment with similar projects without needing to buy an entire Steam Deck upfront, although integrating these parts with other devices will require some technical skill.

The Pixel Nerd’s Steam Deck design takes a different approach than Valve’s current plans. With the upcoming Steam Machine release, it’s becoming obvious that Valve sees the Steam Machine and the VR-ready Frame as their main hardware products for the foreseeable future.
