Shonen anime is usually made for young boys, which often means the female characters aren’t developed as well. Because the stories focus on male protagonists, female heroes often don’t get enough screen time or depth to become truly engaging. However, some shonen series have broken this mold, creating fantastic female characters that fans love. These heroines have become popular and are raising the bar for how female characters are written in the genre.
8. Mikasa Ackerman
- Anime: Attack on Titan
Mikasa Ackerman was incredibly popular as an anime heroine, particularly when Attack on Titan was at the height of its popularity. In terms of raw physical power, very few characters in Attack on Titan could match her, with Levi being her main competition.
Mikasa proved herself a formidable fighter, even against Titans, and participated in many of the series’ most important battles. While her character arc suffered somewhat, she has remained a beloved character for over ten years.
7. Maki Zenin
- Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
The core group in Jujutsu Kaisen is usually considered Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. However, after the Shibuya arc, Nobara and Megumi – who are key characters as the main female lead and the deuteragonist, respectively – haven’t received much focus. Instead, Maki has become a prominent character in most of the story since then.
Maki was born with a weak ability to use cursed energy, which led to her family mistreating her and her twin sister. In Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen, her character developed significantly after her sister’s death, unlocking her full potential – a Heavenly Restriction. This allowed Maki to become incredibly powerful and ultimately defeat the entire Zenin Clan. She’s expected to have more battles in the future, and her story has quickly made her one of the most impactful and memorable female heroes in recent Shonen anime and manga.
6. Desscaras
- Anime: Ichi the Witch
Despite not having an anime yet, ‘Ichi the Witch’ is likely to get one soon, thanks to the buzz it’s receiving from Weekly Shonen Jump. The manga is still new, having only begun in 2024, but its popularity suggests an adaptation is on the horizon.
Even so, the story has already given us a lot of interesting characters, and Desscaras is definitely one of the most compelling. As the main female lead in Ichi the Witch, she’s known as the Abyssal Witch and possesses incredible power. She’s a powerful mentor who protects and guides the others. Her recently revealed past has made her even more captivating – she’s now considered as popular and intriguing as characters like Gojo Satoru from Jujutsu Kaisen. Fans are eagerly anticipating an anime adaptation that will bring her story to life in the coming years.
5. Noelle Silva
- Anime: Black Clover
The central female character in Black Clover is Noelle Silva. Initially, she comes across as proud and somewhat aloof because of her noble upbringing, but her personality is developed throughout the series, and her bond with Asta becomes increasingly important.
Fans have always been curious about Noelle’s past and her connection to the Silva family, and she’s also proven herself in plenty of action-packed fights. Compared to other female leads in recent popular anime, Noelle has consistently been a standout character. Studio Pierrot has announced that Black Clover will be back in 2026, and we’ll get to see an even more powerful version of Noelle.
4. Nami
- Anime: One Piece
The anime and manga series One Piece has faced some criticism regarding its female characters and their designs. However, Nami, one of the earliest members to join Luffy’s crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, is a particularly well-written heroine who stands out among other female characters in the shonen genre, especially considering her early role in the story and Luffy’s quest for the One Piece.
Nami isn’t known for her fighting skills – she’s not the strongest member of the crew. However, her difficult past, revealed during the Arlong Park arc, is a major reason why fans became invested in the story. Despite this, Nami does participate in battles, with her fight against Kalifa being particularly memorable. Beyond the action, fans especially appreciate the compelling and well-written character moments created by Eiichiro Oda, and many hope to see Nami play an even larger role as the story heads towards its conclusion in the Final Saga.

3. Frieren
- Anime: Frieren Beyond Journey’s End
In recent years, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has become a very popular new anime. The story follows Frieren, a powerful and ancient elven mage. She initially travels with a group led by Himmel, but after they pass away or retire, Frieren embarks on a new adventure with a different set of companions.
Frieren is a series that beautifully captures the simple joys of everyday life, and even when the story gets exciting, the elven mage Frieren remains a standout character. The second season of Frieren recently finished airing and proved to be even more popular than expected. The studio behind the show, Madhouse, has announced that a third season is planned for 2027, and fans are already eagerly awaiting its arrival.
2. Emma
- Anime: The Promised Neverland
For a time, The Promised Neverland was a massive success in Weekly Shonen Jump. What set it apart from most other shonen series was its focus on a female protagonist, Emma, who drives the entire story. As a result, she quickly became a fan favorite.
I was really impressed with the first season of this story – it was a fantastic way to introduce Emma’s character. We watched her go to incredible lengths to help the children at the orphanage escape, and that determination really cemented her as one of the most compelling heroines I’ve seen in years. A lot of fans, myself included, are excited about the possibility of seeing her story continue in the new spin-off manga.
1. Jolyne Cujoh
- Anime: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Jolyne Cujoh is a truly fantastic shonen heroine, taking center stage in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean. While the anime adaptation of Stone Ocean wasn’t perfect, Jolyne’s character remained incredibly compelling, a testament to Hirohiko Araki’s skillful writing.
Jolyne isn’t the strongest JoJo, but despite limited abilities with Stone Free, she managed to battle incredibly powerful enemies. Her growth as a character and her reasons for fighting make her a standout female hero in shonen manga.
