MindsEye Studio Has Now Laid Off a Majority of its Staff

Build a Rocket Boy, the developer of MindsEye, has had another round of layoffs, impacting around 170 employees. This leaves the company with only 80 staff members remaining, following the negative reception of their game, MindsEye, last year.

According to Kotaku, Build a Rocket Boy has laid off a significant portion of its workforce – reportedly around 170 employees out of a team of 250. Those affected include several key personnel like James Tyler (Technical Level Designer), Tom Cross (Audio Designer), Leah Philpot (Level Designer), George Jons-Clothier (Digital Marketing Manager), and Gary Iain Gough (QA Analyst). The studio recently tried to revitalize interest in their game MindsEye with a new update called Blacklist, hoping for a comeback similar to Cyberpunk 2077’s, but the update was not successful.

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak explained that despite a lot of effort from the team, the results weren’t what anyone hoped for.

This studio has laid off employees before. After the poor launch of their game, MindsEye, last June, Build a Rocket Boy cut at least 20 jobs. The team has continued to shrink, and now only about 80 people are still working there. It’s uncertain what the studio’s future holds, but this significant reduction in staff is concerning.

The launch of MindsEye was highly controversial. Company leaders claimed the game failed due to deliberate sabotage, while employees pointed to poor management. The game was released with numerous bugs and lacked promised features. Beyond the troubled launch, the studio received criticism for its unprofessional response to feedback.

MindsEye is out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, but we suggest holding off and waiting for a sale before playing it.
