A leak suggests that a new 2D game in the Legend of Zelda series could be released in 2027. With a live-action movie on the way and strong rumors about a remake of Ocarina of Time, the popular fantasy series is already generating a lot of excitement as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. This potential new game might offer a fresh and surprising experience for fans.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the 40th anniversary of the Zelda series, especially with the success of recent games, and things are starting to look good. In addition to the upcoming movie, there’s a strong possibility we’ll see a complete remake of Ocarina of Time later this year, and leaks are consistently pointing to that. A new source has now surfaced, confirming the Ocarina remake rumors and also suggesting that another new Zelda game is on the way soon.
Leaker Claims 2D Zelda Game is Coming in 2027, Possibly Centering Around Ganondorf
On a recent podcast, leaker Nash Weedle discussed several rumors, including a potential new 2D Zelda game planned for release around 2027. The game, currently known by the code name Bernard, is reportedly being co-developed by Nintendo and Grezzo, the same team behind the upcoming Echoes of Wisdom. Interestingly, Weedle suggests the game might even let players control Ganondorf as the main character. While not confirmed, he noted that Grezzo named Echoes of Wisdom and the Link’s Awakening remake after European kings associated with wisdom and courage. The code name Bernard could hint at a focus on power, as King Bernard of Italy was known for attempting to overthrow Emperor Louis I – a connection to Ganondorf’s frequent portrayal as the wielder of the Triforce of Power. It’s a somewhat speculative link, but some fans believe Ganondorf is a more compelling character than Link, and a game starring him could be a refreshing change for the series.

Nash Weedle seems more certain about other aspects of the game. They believe a 2027 release is plausible because the game could be built using the same engine as the recent 2D Zelda titles. This makes sense, considering Echoes of Wisdom was highly praised in 2024, so Nintendo likely sees reusing familiar technology as a smart move. Weedle also predicts Nintendo will announce this new game after the expected release of the Ocarina of Time remake.
It’s important to remember that this information is just a rumor, and shouldn’t be taken as fact. While Nash Weedle has accurately predicted things like the Switch 2 release of Resident Evil 7, they haven’t always been right. They’ve made incorrect predictions before, and a Zelda game focused on Ganondorf would be a surprising move, though Nintendo has recently been willing to try new things. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait for Nintendo to officially share details to know what’s true.

Details about future Zelda games are still pretty vague. While producer Eiji Aonuma mentioned Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment could influence the next Zelda game, it’s not clear how. Currently, most of the focus from the development team is on the upcoming movie, but we can expect more games eventually, though what those games will be remains to be seen.
