People who are excited about the Nintendo Switch 2 have been eagerly awaiting a functional YouTube app. They’ve become so frustrated that they’ve found a temporary solution, but the current workaround has poor video quality. If you care about watching videos in high resolution, it’s best to hold out for an official YouTube app for the Switch 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2 isn’t compatible with the original YouTube app, even if you’ve already downloaded it. Google hasn’t yet released a version of the app designed for the new console, though they are working on one, without a firm release date. It’s been over a year since Google first announced the app was coming “soon,” so players are looking for alternative ways to watch YouTube videos. When the official app does launch, it’s likely to offer better video quality – like 4K and HDR – than the current workaround of using the Switch 2’s web browser.
How to Access YouTube on Nintendo Switch 2
I was so excited to see a Reddit user, JampyL, figured out how to get YouTube working on the new Nintendo Switch 2! They posted a video showing it in action, and honestly, I’m really hoping Nintendo and YouTube work together to make it official soon. But the best part? It’s surprisingly easy to do yourself! Here’s how I got it working:
- Download the free-to-play game Super Animal Royale.
- Via the main menu, click on the playback icon within the News tab.
- Click the option to watch the game’s news via YouTube.
- Once redirected to YouTube, players will be free to search up whatever they desire.
If the cookie options aren’t behaving, multiple refreshes should do the trick.

This special version of YouTube doesn’t seem to restrict what people can watch – everything from older gaming content from Funhaus to current podcasts like the H3 Show is available. However, it does have some drawbacks. Videos are limited to 360p quality, which is fine for audio-based content but makes visually detailed videos difficult to watch. Even more problematic is the inability to sign in. This means users can’t use personalized recommendations or subscriptions and have to manually search for each video they want to see.
When a fully functional YouTube app arrives on the Nintendo Switch 2, it should work much more smoothly than the current version. Users will probably be able to easily sign in and enjoy videos from all their favorite creators on the new console. With the Switch 2’s upgraded screen and technology, videos will likely look even better too.

Although some viewers might not be thrilled with the lower quality of 360p videos and the need to find them directly, this simple trick could be really useful for anyone who wants an extra screen for watching videos. Plus, for the developers of Super Animal Royale, Pixile Studios, an increase in downloads would be a welcome benefit.
