Skywind Gets First Major Update in 2 Years

After two years, the highly anticipated Skywind mod has received a significant update. The update informs fans about the project’s progress as of May 2026. Skywind aims to completely rebuild the world of Morrowind within the Skyrim game engine.

I remember when Skywind first started, right after the Skyrim Creation Kit came out in 2012. At first, the idea was to just bring over stuff from the Morroblivion mod, but it quickly grew into something much bigger. By 2016, the team decided to completely remake Morrowind within Skyrim, rebuilding every single asset from the ground up. It’s been a massive undertaking, and over 1,000 volunteers have contributed over the years! We hadn’t heard a huge update since May 2024, but the team just reappeared to let us know how things are going – it’s awesome to see they’re still making progress after all this time.

Skywind Edges Closer to Completion After 14 Years of Development

A new 32-minute YouTube video details the progress of the Skywind mod, which recreates Morrowind within Skyrim. The team is nearing completion of the art and level design for outdoor areas. Animators have made significant headway and are 75% finished, while writing and voice acting are at 96% and 92% completion, respectively – major achievements for the project. To fill gaps in the soundtrack, the team is now accepting volunteers to help recreate the music. Importantly, implementing quests – a key part of the original Morrowind – is almost finished. While this is encouraging news, there’s still no confirmed release date for Skywind.

As a huge fan, I’ve seen so many ambitious Skyrim mods start with a lot of hype, but sadly, most of them never actually get finished. It’s one thing to say you’re going to recreate Morrowind inside Skyrim, like the Skywind team is doing, but actually doing it is a whole other level of dedication! I’m honestly really impressed that Skywind seems like it’s going to be one of the few that actually makes it all the way. Even though it’s been a couple of years since their last big update, I never really got the sense that this project was abandoned – they’ve stayed active on Discord and shared little snippets of progress. But seeing this new, major update? That’s fantastic and really reassuring!

It’s amazing how much players are still able to improve and change Skyrim through mods, even after so many years. On computers, these modifications can completely overhaul the game, and they’re a huge reason why it’s still so popular, nearly 15 years after it first came out.

Because Skyrim is still the latest Elder Scrolls game, it’s an ideal platform for large-scale mods like Skywind. These ambitious mods often take longer to finish than the time between official game releases, which usually causes progress to slow down and projects to get canceled. However, with Bethesda taking a long time to develop The Elder Scrolls 6, mods such as Skywind and Skyblivion have been able to maintain their momentum and get closer to being finished.
