The conclusion of Resident Evil 4 Remake wraps up the central story well, though it does leave some mysteries for fans interested in the game’s deeper background. Leon’s terrifying journey through Spain ends on a mostly positive note, but players likely know this isn’t the last we’ll see of him. Here’s a summary of what happened during and after the Las Plagas outbreak, including what the brief scenes with Ada and Wesker in the Separate Ways DLC might mean.
Major spoilers ahead for the endings of Resident Evil 4 Remake and the Separate Ways DLC.
Leon and Ashley (Sort Of) Live Happily Ever After By The End of Resident Evil 4
Okay, so the end of the game is just amazing. Leon finally takes down Saddler – completely obliterates him! – and then the whole island, that crazy base for the Los Iluminados cult, just explodes. It’s so intense! Luckily, Leon and Ashley barely make it out on a jetski, speeding through the water. They share a little bit of back-and-forth, and then they’re riding off into the sunrise, presumably heading straight for rescue. It’s such a classic, hopeful ending!
The ending of RE4 Remake is pretty simple and doesn’t offer a lot of detail. The game mostly leaves it up to players to decide what happens next. However, if you’re wondering about the fate of Leon and Ashley after the island’s destruction, later Resident Evil games provide some clues.
What Happened to Leon After RE4?
In Resident Evil 4, Leon’s main mission was to rescue Ashley Graham, the president’s daughter, and ensure her safety. He successfully did this after defeating Saddler. Though no other games or stories showed what happened to Leon immediately after the events in Spain, it’s known that he turned down Ashley’s offer to join her security team. He then continued working for the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigation Unit before being recruited by the DSO (Division of Security Operations).
Leon Kennedy starred in the animated film Resident Evil Degeneration alongside Claire Redfield. He continued to appear in several other movies and became a playable character in Resident Evil 6 and Resident Evil 9. During the events of one story, Leon briefly becomes infected with the T-Virus, but he quickly recovers after meeting Grace Ashcroft.
What Happened to Ashley After RE4?
Unlike Leon, Ashley wasn’t featured prominently in any further stories after the original game. The next time fans see her is in the Infinite Darkness movie, where a quick shot of her photo appears in President Graham’s office.
After the events of Resident Evil 4, it’s likely Ashley Graham returned to a normal life. Kidnapped while in college, she probably finished her studies after Leon rescued her. Although she expressed interest in becoming an agent during the game, there’s no indication that she ever pursued that career.

What Happened to Las Plagas and the Los Iluminados?
The fight against Salazar in the castle ended with the destruction of the original Plaga, the source of the Plaga parasites. However, Plagas still exist in the Resident Evil world, though they’ve changed. Some members of the Los Iluminados cult survived with Plaga parasites inside them, and they eventually worked with bioweapons dealer Glenn Arias in Resident Evil Vendetta to create the A-Virus. Afterwards, a group called Tricell created even newer versions of the Plaga.
Ada Wong’s Ending in Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways
Just before Leon’s climactic battle with Saddler, he rescues Ada and allows her to escape with a powerful Plaga sample. The Separate Ways DLC reveals Ada discussing this sample with Albert Wesker, fulfilling his earlier request. After Wesker gives a chilling response to her question, Ada unexpectedly aims a gun at the helicopter they’re traveling in, demanding a change of direction.
Ada’s initial mission was to deliver a dormant Plaga sample to Wesker. But as the game unfolds, she ultimately betrays him, probably because she disagreed with his plans for a new world order.
The Plaga sample was intended to help Wesker quickly advance his plan for global destruction, a process viewers witness in Resident Evil 5. Even though Ada betrayed him, Wesker successfully obtained a powerful Plaga sample by recovering Krauser’s body. This allowed him to improve the original Las Plagas strain and ultimately create the Uroboros virus.
The ending of the Separate Ways DLC for RE4 Remake contains several references to Resident Evil 5, such as:
- An image of Excella, one of Tricell’s executives in Africa where RE5 is set.
- Another image of a round platform that looks a lot like the Underground Garden area in RE5.
- Krauser’s recovered body is briefly shown on a covered table as Wesker steps away from his desk, confirming that he can proceed with his master plan even without the sample Ada secured for him..
Okay, so I’ve been thinking about a Resident Evil 5 remake, and honestly, I’m hoping it’s still a ways off. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to play it, but I really think Capcom should remake the original Resident Evil or Code Veronica first. Especially since so many new fans jumped into the series with the RE4 remake – they deserve to understand the whole Albert Wesker story better. That said… it would be amazing to play as Chris Redfield and try to punch a boulder again. Seriously, that was iconic!
