Collaborative game genres might find puzzle games particularly suitable, since they offer an effortless way to connect with a partner while figuring out strategies to advance together.
Among the numerous multiplayer puzzle games available, many are competitive and some just don’t measure up when you take everything into account.
Since I spent my childhood playing numerous multiplayer puzzle games alongside my siblings, it’s no surprise that I have a soft spot for engaging puzzle games where you can invite your friends to join in the fun.
I’m compiling this list specifically to present ten terrific cooperative puzzle games, which will stimulate your minds as well as those of your teammates, and ensure a delightful gaming experience together.
10. KarmaZoo
Friendship Royale
KarmaZoo stands out as a remarkably distinctive Puzzle Platformer. You can play it solo on one device, or team up with up to nine other players online for assistance, a setup that surprisingly functions more effectively than one might initially anticipate.
In this game, each player assumes control over a diverse assortment of characters, each with unique skills. However, these characters can only be accessed if you assist others, fostering a strong sense of cooperation. The game is designed in such a way that attempting tasks independently could lead to your character’s demise, making collaboration highly beneficial.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can say that it’s quite enjoyable when you have numerous companions to join forces with in-game. The beauty of this particular title lies in its ability to foster camaraderie and cooperation, encouraging players to help each other out. Each online gathering feels like a vibrant community where everyone contributes to making the experience delightful.
The game has quirky atmospheres, an original design featuring minimalistic characters against intricate backdrops. If you’re seeking a game to enjoy with new people or think you’d click with cooperative play locally, it’s worth giving it a try.
9. It Takes Two
Slightly Puzzling
The enchanting game titled “It Takes Two” primarily revolves around the collaboration of two players, offering a truly captivating cooperative play. While I believe the overall experience is fantastic, I should note that it only ranks average in terms of puzzle-solving challenges.
The puzzles aren’t incredibly difficult, but they may briefly perplex you, particularly in the Clock section. However, they should be manageable.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but be captivated by its focus on crafting thrilling stage designs, engaging gameplay mechanics, and even dabbling in the unexpected territory of simulating divorce scenarios. To top it all off, it cleverly incorporates puzzles that creatively utilize its two characters, making for an unforgettable gaming experience.
This game is technically categorized as a puzzle game, but with its overall fun factor, I believe it’s worth trying if you’re seeking something entertaining without causing undue frustration.
8. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
Don’t Stress If You Want To Live!
In the engaging game titled “Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes,” one participant assumes the role of a bomb diffuser while the other is tasked with providing instructions from a manual. This friendship-testing experience can be quite nerve-wracking!
Instead, it’s quite challenging since you’re unlikely to be committing to memory an extensive 23-page guide filled with complex conditions, symbol tables, and a step-by-step guide similar to Simon Says.
This creates a highly agitated mood within the solver and leads to confusion for those following along manually. Given that the game changes every time, you have as much playing time as you can handle.
After some time, the game becomes quite monotonous since it doesn’t offer much variety, yet its innovative idea makes it enjoyable, especially when playing with folks who could remain your friends post-gameplay.
7. Toodee and Topdee
Double the Dimensions
Among the distinctive puzzle games available, Toodee and Topdee stands out as a brilliant fusion of puzzle platforming and overhead puzzle genres, offering distinct perspectives for each player.
This game appears easier than it actually is. While one participant performs intricate jumping tasks, the other juggles box-moving and coordination duties, creating a true challenge that tests both skill and camaraderie.
If you and your friend are skilled at video games, this game could be an excellent choice for you, as playing it with a less experienced person might lead to a lot of frustration.
Once you’re securely inside, you’ll effortlessly maneuver through platforms strategically placed by the other player along your route, ideally without them disrupting your progress.
Here’s another option:
Within the confines of the game, when you’re safely enclosed, you’ll glide smoothly over platforms skillfully set up by the other player, hoping they don’t throw any unwanted surprises your way.
6. Snipperclips
Trimmed to Perfection
Without a doubt, Snipperclips stands among my most cherished Nintendo Switch exclusives. It’s a delightfully adorable and uncomplicated game that allows you to collaborate with a companion, trimming shapes from one another in order to conquer intriguing puzzles.
This progresses from creating basic forms, to carving out cups by dividing each other, to tossing balls through hoops and employing straightforward techniques such as clipping, twisting, and leaping, all leading to an array of distinct concepts.
This game is an absolute joy to engage with, each puzzle posing a thought-provoking challenge that’s enjoyable to solve, while boasting a straightforward and uncluttered design.
The game showcases an exceptional Nintendo-style design, fully utilizing its innovative idea and maintaining enjoyment throughout the brief playing time.
5. Escape Simulator
Quite Roomy
If you’ve had experience with actual escape rooms or have witnessed them, you can grasp the concept of Escape Simulator easily, as it primarily involves escaping numerous rooms.
In every room, the arrangement is thoughtfully designed, filled with riddles and suggestions to guide you seamlessly from one puzzle to another, resulting in a consistent and enjoyable challenge.
Similar to traditional escape rooms, collaborating with others offers a significant advantage: several minds pooling their thoughts towards a common goal. Effective communication becomes crucial in such scenarios.
This seems like an outstanding representation of the escape room concept, enhanced with numerous user-created levels, and featuring both Portal and Among Us downloadable content. That’s simply fantastic!
4. Death Squared
Simple and Silly
Death Squared is fantastic because it’s not only filled with humor in its dialogue, but also offers a top-notch, clutter-free puzzle experience designed for multiple players. In other words, this game is simply amazing!
In this game, you and your companions will maneuver blocks that have a limited ability to move objects and traverse the surroundings. This requires strategic thinking as you utilize the game’s layout to gain an advantage.
What I appreciate about it, particularly when it comes to cooperative puzzle games, is that each level is tailored specifically to the number of players you have, with two-player levels being notably simpler compared to those designed for four.
As a gamer, I can vouch that this game takes it from being just another simple puzzle game to an exceptional one perfect for friend-play. Despite its lack of complex depth, it still manages to stand out amongst the best simplistic games on the market.
3. Unravel 2
Strung Together Nicely
Among the captivating and aesthetically pleasing cooperative puzzle-platformer games I’ve encountered, Unravel 2, published by Electronic Arts, is outstanding, leaving me uncertain yet impressed.
Together with your companion, you’re linked as if by an elastic tether, allowing you both to maneuver, scale walls, move objects, and collaborate seamlessly, ensuring you don’t stray too far from each other.
You handle this tool exceptionally well when maneuvering a toy vehicle in the yard, using it to hoist items for a friend, and navigating through the relatively light obstacle course.
This game doesn’t demand extreme skill, however, it necessitates some careful performance, thus rendering it manageable for those who can handle its challenging parts effectively.
2. We Were Here
Hear Me Out
In case you’re unfamiliar, the game “We Were Here” places you and your companion in distinct areas within a colossal castle. The unique challenge is that communication between you two is limited to using a walkie-talkie.
In simpler terms, you’ll both be working with minimal data, trying to explain what you observe, and relying on being clear enough for progression. It can be puzzling yet exciting because you never know how well your descriptions will be understood.
This becomes particularly challenging when you require your friend to choose among a sequence of rather abstract signs, explain them vaguely enough for potential misunderstanding, and find yourself at a standstill for some time.
In this game series, you’ll find five fantastic titles that share many similarities. However, the first one is available for free, making it an excellent starting point. If the concept of having your friend bark commands at you doesn’t appeal to you initially, I still recommend giving it a try. After all, you might discover that it’s more enjoyable than you thought!
1. Portal 2
A True Test
Ultimately, one of my all-time favorite video games, Portal 2, boasts an outstanding cooperative mode featuring a distinct narrative separate from the primary game, while maintaining its signature witty and intelligent dialogue.
As a thrilled enthusiast, I find myself embarking on an exhilarating adventure where my buddy and I tackle intricate puzzles. Instead of the conventional methods, we manipulate portals, hurl cubes around, and finesse laser beams’ directions – all thanks to our newfound access to four distinct portals!
These puzzles seem to be intricately woven and challenging compared to normals, making it exciting as a team of two will tackle them, deciphering tricky portal positions, and soaring aloft with vigor.
Although you might assume that the game’s intricacy makes it challenging for beginners, I can vouch for its accessibility as I played it with my younger brother at the age of 8. Therefore, I believe it is a game that most people could easily grasp and play.
