From Dust to Dust: Witch Hat Atelier Episode 7 Review

Now that the first season of Witch Hat Atelier is more than halfway over, people are already hoping for a second season – and it’s easy to see why. This fantasy anime has quickly become a favorite of the Spring 2024 season, and many are already calling it one of the best series of the decade. Everything about Witch Hat Atelier – from its beautiful art style, faithfully adapted from the original manga by Kamome Shirahama, to its compelling characters and enchanting Celtic-inspired music – has captivated viewers. Each new episode is eagerly anticipated and quickly relieves any stress. While Episode 6 offered a welcome moment of calm after the intense dragon battle in the previous episode, the ending suggested more exciting events are on the way, and fans weren’t disappointed when the latest episode aired.

The peaceful scene between Qifrey and Coco, where Coco excitedly shared her love of magic with his friend, was interrupted by a frantic knocking at the door. A man urgently requested Qifrey’s help, explaining that the heavy rain had destroyed the bridge over the Staircase River, leaving a carriage stranded. While this was a task clearly beyond the skill of the apprentice magicians, Agott insisted on joining, eager to demonstrate her abilities. The episode begins with Qifrey pointing out the likely difficulty of the situation, but as viewers know, Agott, much like her rival Coco, is determined and doesn’t give up easily.

Witch Hat Atelier Continues to Balance Quiet Magic With More Jaw-Dropping Acts of Sorcery

Daring Decisions and Drama Return in This Week’s Installment

In the world of Witch Hat Atelier, magic users carefully guard their abilities from the non-magical world. Contrary to popular belief, magic isn’t about being born with a special gift; it’s actually created using a unique ink, meaning anyone can learn it with practice. In Episode 7, Qifrey tells Agott that because she hasn’t passed the second magical test, joining their current mission is pointless. Agott, known for her quick temper, challenges him, demanding more training opportunities. Surprisingly, it’s Olruggio who intervenes, taking Agott along while the others gather supplies for a proper rescue. He believes practical experience is the best teacher, and the chaotic situation they encounter is sure to be a memorable lesson.

Agott anticipated a significant role in the rescue effort, but was assigned the seemingly trivial task of using magic to dry clothes, leaving her feeling undervalued. She’s reminded that all work has value, and even small tasks help us improve our abilities and concentration. Everyone experiences impatience, but it’s important to remain calm and careful to avoid errors. Meanwhile, Qifrey used his enchanted sword, Raincleaver, to temporarily push back the floodwaters, allowing Olruggio to save two people who were stranded. Although they lost most of their belongings, they were rescued. As Qifrey, his companion, Richeh, and Tetia quickly check for other people needing help, Coco and Agott are unexpectedly confronted with an even greater danger.

Young Custas tries to climb down a rope tied to a tree, hoping to recover some of his belongings. His father, Dagda, realizes how dangerous this is, and soon Custas falls and is knocked out. Coco is also swept away by the strong current. This is Agott’s opportunity to show what she can do, but she quickly finds that it’s much harder to act in a crisis than she imagined. Overwhelmed, she’s haunted by difficult memories and doubts herself. Despite the pressure, Agott eventually creates a stunning diversion, allowing Coco to put her own smart plan into action.

All of that practice—so that I wouldn’t be afraid when it was time to act. — Agott

Coco used a combination of levitation magic and a powerful spell from Richeh to rescue both herself and her new friend, earning a reluctant nod of respect from Agott. True to form, Coco immediately thanked her friends and teacher instead of taking credit herself. Though everything turned out alright, the girls found themselves cornered by white flags and members of The Knights Moralis before Qifrey and the others could return. It turned out Coco’s spell hadn’t worked perfectly, and her allegiance was put into question. Anyone associated with the Brimmed Caps is supposed to have their memories erased, and the episode ends with that frightening fate looming over them.

To Be Useful, We All Must First Be Students

While Agott Is Headstrong, Coco Is Heartstrong

Coco and Agott are very different people, but this episode brilliantly highlighted their shared struggles. Beneath Agott’s often-snobbish exterior, she battles the same insecurities and feelings of inadequacy as Coco – she just hides them with sarcasm and anger. Coco, however, is more accepting of her mistakes, viewing them as learning opportunities and embracing growth with kindness. As a newcomer to magic, it’s natural that not every spell works perfectly for her. Witch Hat Atelier excels at showing characters grow and reminds us that our actions shape who we become. The story makes you wonder: is self-criticism necessary for improvement? Or is it easier to grow with self-acceptance and a positive outlook? Coco is a great example of a positive role model, but Agott’s strong will can also be inspiring.

Witch Hat Atelier explores the idea that it’s never too late for a fresh start, regardless of who you are. The story follows Coco, a young girl determined to save her mother, and while her journey isn’t easy, every challenge makes her stronger. As the series progresses, a growing darkness threatens to emerge, but Coco won’t have to face it alone when the villains finally reveal themselves. The show offers a hopeful message about finding new beginnings and overcoming adversity.

For now, Qifrey and Olruggio will (likely) come in hot in Episode 8. I can’t wait.

Witch Hat Atelier can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
