As you near the end of the Outbound area, you’ll encounter a very steep hill your camper van won’t be able to climb. To overcome this, you’ll need to upgrade your van’s engine, which requires a rare material called Adamant Metal. Finding Adamant Metal isn’t straightforward – just like previous materials, it’s tricky to locate the Chrome Ore needed to craft it. This guide will show you exactly where to find the Chrome Ore and how to turn it into Adamant Metal in Outbound.
Where to Find Chrome Ore in Outbound
You can find Chrome Ore mainly in the Mountains, the last area of the game, specifically around Silvermist Springs. While it appears in smaller amounts in supply boxes and landmarks in previous areas, the Mountains offer the most abundant source.
Silvermist Springs is located just north of the final, challenging climb that requires the third motor upgrade. After crossing the wooden bridge leading to the climb, look for a left turn with stone steps. These steps lead up to the hot springs – that’s Silvermist Springs.
When you get to the springs, keep an eye out for silvery ores scattered around. You should find around 10 to 12 of them, and each one will give you three Chrome Ore, for a total of 36 Chrome Ore.
If you collect 10 Chrome Ore nodes, you’ll get enough Chrome Ore—about 30—to create the 30 Adamant Metal you need for the last motor upgrade’s research and crafting.
At first, I didn’t bother checking out Silvermist Springs, assuming it wouldn’t have anything useful. I also completely forgot about one last engine upgrade until I hit a really steep hill and remembered I still needed to find some parts.
How to Make Adamant Metal in Outbound
Now that you have Chrome Ore, simply place it in your camper van’s Metal Smelter. Similar to how Hardened and Coarse Metal were used before, you only need one piece of Chrome Ore to create one Adamant Metal.
To get Adamant Metal, just put Chrome Ore into your Metal Smelter – it takes about 30 seconds. I suggest smelting the full 20 Chrome Ore at once after you gather it from Silvermist Springs. This lets you focus on collecting the other materials needed for the engine upgrade research and crafting while it processes.
How to Get the Final Motor Upgrade in Outbound
Just like other improvements for your vehicle, you’ll need to unlock the blueprint for this one first. Head to the Vehicle Research Station and find Motor Upgrade III at the very top of the first skill tree – it’s on the left. You’ll need to gather some materials to research it, including:
- 20 Adamant Metal
- 40 Rose Minerals
You get Rose Minerals by putting Quartz Rock into your Smasher. You can find Quartz Rock all over the Mountains area – look for small rocks to collect while you’re working on the last Hammer upgrade. Since you’ll be breaking big Quartz Rock boulders to reach the final climb, you’ll likely have a good supply already.
Once you’ve done your research, you can build it at the workbench in your camper van, provided you have the necessary materials.
- 10 Adamant Metal
- 20 Rose Minerals
Finish the quick wrench-based challenge, and your camper van will be all set to drive to the landmark in Outbound.
