In Outbound, you’ll embark on a camper van journey across the globe, overcoming challenges, creating useful items, and upgrading your vehicle as you travel. Because it’s a more relaxed game, you might be curious about how long it takes to finish and how many different locations you’ll visit. I’ve played through the entire game and have the answers for you below.
How Long Does Outbound Take to Beat?
Steam says it took me 16 hours to finish Outbound on my first try. I didn’t spend much time customizing my vehicle; I just focused on getting through the game.
I spent most of my time building the machines needed to gather resources and advance in the game, rather than customizing my camper van – I’m not much of a creative player! However, I did explore quite a bit, finding almost half of the cairn stacks, a third of the hidden gnomes, and all the campfires. It definitely wasn’t a speedrun. Actually, I sometimes got stuck figuring out where to go or what to build, so I had to revisit old areas looking for hints, which probably added an extra half hour to an hour to my total playtime.
If you’re a completionist aiming to discover every rock stack, hidden gnome, and light every campfire, expect to spend around 25 hours. But, finding everything isn’t necessary to progress in the game – it’s purely for those who enjoy collecting!
How Many Areas Are There in Outbound?
Okay, so in Outbound, there are four distinct areas to explore. Getting to each one isn’t a straight shot – you’ll usually need to find some rare materials and then process them using a machine to create what you need to progress. Like, to get to the third area, I had to fix an electric shutter, and the fourth area required me to repair a ferry. Basically, I had to really scour each area to collect enough materials and download blueprints from those signal towers before I could move on. Here’s a rundown of all four areas I explored.
- Forest
- Coast
- Canyon
- Mountains
Of these four areas, the Mountains section is the quickest to complete, usually taking just a couple of hours. If you’ve been collecting materials throughout the game, and continue to do so here, you should be able to progress through it without much difficulty.
Can You Carry on Playing After the Credits?
That’s right! After you finish the story and see the credits, you’ll get to drive around freely. You can explore everywhere, find any remaining collectibles, and customize your camper van to your liking.
