How to Reach the Fourth Area in Outbound

The Canyons is a large area in Outbound that presents a unique challenge. You’ll need to cross the canyon while managing your camper van’s overheating engine and crafting electronic parts to complete objectives. What makes The Canyons different from other areas is that there isn’t a straightforward path to the next location – the fourth and final area of Outbound – which can be confusing for players trying to figure out where to go next.

How to Reach the Fourth Area in Outbound

To get to the mountains – the fourth area in Outbound – you’ll first need to fix the ferry’s engine. Then, you can pick up balloons from the dry dock, which is located in the northern part of the Canyons.

Once the ferry is fixed, it will take you to a new area. If you previously explored the ‘Coast’ area – the second location in the game – you may have noticed a broken ferry port. To get to the mountains, go back to the Coast and continue straight ahead past the area entrance, instead of turning left to return to the beginning. Looking at the map, the ferry dock is located in the bottom left corner, as you can see in the screenshot below.

Simply drive your camper van onto the ferry and use the control panel on the right side of the boarding area. The ferry will then take you to the mountains.

Repairing the Ferry at the Dry Dock in Outbound

To get the ferry working again, you’ll need to repair its engine first. You’ll need a level 2 wrench and the materials listed below to do this.

  • 4 Casings: These are made by placing one sheet metal and two clay in your Sheet Press.
  • 2 Electronics: Made by placing one bolt and one sheet metal in your Assembler.
  • 2 Hardened Metal: Made by placing one Red Ore in your Metal Smelter.
  • The Wrench II upgrade requires 4 Hardened Metal, 2 Casings, and 2 Bolts, as well as the blueprint, which you can download from a signal tower to craft at your Workbench.

Once this is fixed, you’ll need to repair each of the transport balloons. Each balloon requires 2 Strong Weave and 2 Hyperthread, so you’ll need a total of 6 of each material to get the ferry working again.

To make a single Hyperthread, combine two Hyperfibers in your Spinning Wheel. You can find Hyperfibers in the canyon – look for yellow bushes and shrubs to harvest them. Once you have three Hyperthreads, you can craft a Strong Weave using your Weaver.

To completely fix the transport balloons, you’ll need 15 Hyperthreads. Keep an eye out for Hyperfibers in the canyons and gather them whenever you can.

I unlocked the sickle upgrade pretty late while exploring the canyon. After fixing the ferry’s motor, I needed to find Hyperfibers, which thankfully weren’t too hard to get. There are several large bushes full of them just west of the Dry Dock – the same place the ferry is located – so I didn’t have to travel far to collect them.

Even though the ferry has four balloons, you only need to fix three. The front right balloon automatically restores itself after you repair the other three.
