Amazon’s New Spring 2026 Anime is Officially Japan’s Next Solo Leveling

I’m seriously blown away by how well one of Prime Video’s anime from the Spring 2026 season is doing! It kind of slipped onto the scene – a really gorgeous, artistic seinen anime – but the story has completely captured the hearts of viewers in Japan. It’s amazing to see something like this really connect with people!

Nippon Sangoku is a hugely popular anime in Japan, attracting viewers from all walks of life – from office workers to students. The show’s depiction of a potential post-apocalyptic future for Japan has captured everyone’s attention. It’s also become incredibly popular internationally, reaching a similar level of fame as Solo Leveling.

Nippon Sangoku’s Japan Is a Country Divided Into Three Kingdoms

The Country’s Future is Shrouded in War, Conflict, and Conquest

The anime Nippon Sangoku is based on a manga series by Ikka Matsuki, which began in 2021 in MangaONE Ura Sunday. The story takes place in a modern Japan devastated by nuclear war and facing numerous challenges.

Things are really falling apart here, it’s heartbreaking. We’re seeing a huge influx of refugees, and honestly, it feels like too much for us to handle. To make matters even worse, a terrible virus swept through Japan, and we lost so many people – it was devastating. And then, as if that wasn’t enough, a massive earthquake hit, completely reshaping the landscape and leaving damage that will never truly be fixed. It’s just… a lot.

Japan’s leaders at the time didn’t respond effectively to growing problems, ultimately leading the country into decline. High taxes caused widespread poverty, which sparked a popular uprising. This conflict dramatically reshaped Japan, splitting it into three separate kingdoms – Yamato, Seii, and Takeo.

There is No More Technology and Culture in Nippon Sangoku

Nippon Sangoku Radically Changes & Challenges Japanese Society

Nippon Sangoku takes place about a century after Japan was thrown back to a much earlier time. People in this new era talk about the present as a distant, almost mythical past – a time they weren’t alive to experience and find both odd and fascinating. Old magazines, comics, and even stories of amusement park visits serve as reminders of a life they can only imagine.

It’s like someone from the future went back to the final days of the samurai and told people about what was to come. But these people can’t grasp how much influence the West had on Japan in 2019, because their Japan is stuck in the past – specifically, the Meiji era. This means no modern technology, traditional clothing, and swords are still the main weapons used.

This anime showcases Japan’s ability to return to its traditional roots, discarding the influences of modern society. The Japan depicted in Nippon Sangoku, set around the year 2119 (if the calendar hadn’t changed), strongly resembles Japan as it was in 1868. This shift has significant effects on the country’s society, landscape, and what lies ahead.

A Young Man Wants to Unify Japan

Nippon Sangoku Follows a Protagonist Who Knows Exactly What He Wants

The story of Nippon Sangoku centers on Aoteru Misumi, a character determined to bring Japan together and build a better future for the nation. He faces a huge challenge: Japan is split into three warring kingdoms and riddled with self-serving politicians. The first episode dramatically changes Misumi’s story, revealing him as a Ministry of Agriculture officer who skillfully uses his legal expertise to navigate the complex political landscape.

Misumi has a natural leadership quality and inspires his coworkers, even though he isn’t a soldier. He’s also happily married to a strong and principled woman who believes he’s capable of great things – perhaps even leading the nation. An event early in the story pushes Misumi to embrace his potential, and he soon meets Yoshitsune Asama, a fearless warrior who will become a crucial friend and change the course of his journey.

Nippon Sangoku is a Historical Anime that Hooks You From the First Episode

Nippon Sangoku Offers a Unique and Captivating Experience

Nippon Sangoku draws inspiration from the classic story of the Three Kingdoms, along with Japanese history and the samurai period. It presents a compelling historical narrative, beautifully brought to life with an art style that resembles a moving manga, thanks to its soft and delicate color scheme.

With its unique blend of black and white manga-style art, detailed backgrounds, and striking character designs, Nippon Sangoku offers a visual experience unlike most mainstream anime. This distinctive style is what makes it so captivating, and it’s visually competitive with highly acclaimed, beautifully animated shows like Frieren and Solo Leveling.

It’s easy to get lost in the story and feel like you’re watching a historical drama, but the main character makes it clear this isn’t a tale of old Japan. He’s clearly knowledgeable about modern culture and society. Sometimes, he even feels like a forward-thinking figure such as a young Leonardo da Vinci, whose ideas were also remarkably ahead of his time.

Beyond everything else, Nippon Sangoku is a gritty, intense, and adult anime. It doesn’t rely on large-scale battles or dramatic flourishes. When a character dies, it’s brutal and definitive – often shown with graphic detail. There’s no room for sympathy, and the villains are so despicable they evoke genuine anger. Right from the start, Nippon Sangoku makes it clear what it’s about and asks viewers to stick with it, promising a story centered around revenge.

Nippon Sangoku is Prime Video’s Latest 10/10 Exclusive

Amazon Continues to Invest in Quality Anime

I’ve noticed that Prime Video has been adding a lot of great anime lately, and I’m happy to report that Nippon Sangoku is among them. It’s available to watch with both dubbed audio and subtitles in many different languages. The anime itself was created by Studio Kafka, and Kazuaki Terasawa directed it.

Adapting the manga Nippon Sangoku was a challenge, particularly with the choice to maintain a visual style similar to the original artwork. Takahiko Abiru managed both the character design and animation direction, and the results are impressive. This isn’t a typical, vibrant action anime; instead, it aims to be impactful in a more subtle way.

To feel authentic, the anime Nippon Sangoku shows a Japan of the past with all its flaws and complexities. It doesn’t shy away from depicting everyday habits like smoking – so much so that the show includes a disclaimer advising young viewers not to try it. The powerful music by Kevin Penkin also greatly enhances the dramatic impact of each scene. Overall, Nippon Sangoku is a truly exceptional anime that’s well worth watching.
