Gundam Director Defends Watching 140 Anime Episodes to Understand New Movie

The anime series Mobile Suit Gundam is a classic, having begun in 1979 and remaining popular ever since. A new installment, Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: Sorcery of Nymph Circe, is coming out soon, but with so much history behind it, it can be intimidating for people unfamiliar with the series. Sorcery of Nymph Circe continues storylines from three previous anime series and two movies, leading many to wonder if it’s possible to enjoy the film without knowing all the background.

TopMob recently spoke with Shūkō Murase, the director of Sorcery of Nymph Circe, in a revealing conversation about the film and the history of the Gundam franchise. Viewers unfamiliar with the Gundam Universal Century saga might miss important details, references, and subtle storytelling elements that will especially appeal to longtime fans.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: Sorcery of Nymph Circe Explains Why the New Movie Isn’t Stand Alone

And That’s a Good Thing

TopMob interviewed Shūkō Murase, the director of Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: Sorcery of Nymph Circe, and asked if the latest film could be enjoyed even if you haven’t seen any of the previous Gundam movies. Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway continues the story from Char’s Counterattack, which itself follows Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam. Murase explained that Sorcery of Nymph Circe is designed to be fully understood with knowledge of those three series and two films.

Murase replied,

That’s a great question, though a tough one! I’ve never seen Star Wars, but I wonder if I watched the newest movie, would I be able to follow what’s happening? Would I even enjoy it? I think those two things go hand-in-hand. Probably not, though, and a big reason is that the creator, Tomino, has a really unusual way of naming things. It’s often hard to tell if a name refers to a person, a robot, or an organization. Someone unfamiliar with the Star Wars universe wouldn’t have a clue.

He has a unique naming style, and I’ve heard that within the Gundam universe, the name “Anaheim” is instantly recognizable. However, someone unfamiliar with Gundam wouldn’t have any idea what it refers to – it’s a company, but that’s not obvious unless you’re a fan. This pattern repeats throughout the series; the world is so detailed that you really need to watch several Gundam movies or shows to fully understand it.

I believe that if we made a Gundam movie so simple anyone could immediately understand it, it wouldn’t feel like Gundam anymore. The complex world Tomino-sensei built is central to the story, and making something universally accessible would be a real challenge.

The Gundam UC Saga is Amazing & Worth Watching

The Original UC Trilogy & Char’s Counterattack Are All Streaming on Crunchyroll

Calling the original Gundam trilogy and Char’s Counterattack a masterpiece doesn’t even begin to cover how amazing they are. These are truly some of the greatest anime ever created, culminating in a phenomenal movie that perfectly concludes Yoshiyuki Tomino’s original story. Don’t watch these series just to prepare for Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway; watch them because they’re exceptional anime, finished off with a flawless, 10/10 movie.

The first Mobile Suit Gundam essentially created the ‘real robot’ genre, with compelling characters and a story that honestly portrayed the harshness of war. Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam is a bleak and thought-provoking story about the dangers of fascism, and its depiction of war’s cruelty remains powerfully relevant. Mobile Suit ZZ Gundam is a surprisingly overlooked gem that focuses on the impact of war on children, and it boasts the best visuals and conclusion of any series in the franchise.

Even today, Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack remains a truly exceptional anime film. It boasts stunning animation, the most impressive fight scenes in the entire Gundam series, and a compelling story about clashing beliefs. The film’s emotional finale perfectly concludes the Universal Century saga. Both anime and science fiction fans should experience all 140 episodes and this incredible movie – not just to enjoy a modern Gundam film – but to understand why Gundam has remained so popular for almost half a century.
