In the world of Naruto, the Five Great Shinobi Nations – the Hidden Leaf, Stone, Mist, Cloud, and Sand Villages – are the most powerful countries. Because of their strength, many of history’s greatest ninjas have come from these villages. However, some incredibly skilled ninjas weren’t affiliated with any of the Five Great Nations.
Many of these warriors were members of the Akatsuki, a dangerous group mostly made up of highly skilled, rogue ninjas capable of defeating even the strongest leaders and powerful beasts. Others lived in a recently established village created by Orochimaru, and he granted them a potent Curse Mark. Some of these shinobi were powerful enough to threaten an entire nation, and one was so strong he was practically a god.
10. Kidomaru
- Hidden Sound Village
The Sound Four were powerful bodyguards working for Orochimaru, each possessing his dangerous Curse Mark. Kidomaru, one of the four, became significantly stronger, faster, and tougher when using the Curse Mark, and could even transform into a spider-like creature with a more advanced level of the Mark. He had undergone body modifications, giving him an extra eye on his forehead and six arms. While capable in close combat thanks to these extra limbs, Kidomaru was primarily skilled at long-range attacks.
Man, Kidomaru was a seriously cool ninja! He could create these incredibly strong, sticky spiderwebs with his chakra, and he didn’t just stop there – he could summon a massive spider that would unleash a swarm of smaller spiders on his opponents. Honestly, Neji was lucky to even survive that fight! The only reason he lasted as long as he did was thanks to his Byakugan – it’s one of the most amazing abilities in the whole Naruto world that doesn’t even require ninjutsu. Kidomaru’s senses were off the charts, too. He had this third eye that let him pinpoint all your weak spots from like, fifty-five yards away! And his arrows? Forget about it! They could plow right through trees and still cause massive internal damage. Neji really needed to get to the hospital quickly after that encounter, or things could have gone very differently.
9. Tayuya
- Hidden Sound Village
Tayuya was the sole female member of the Sound Four, and generally considered their second most powerful fighter. During the mission to bring Sasuke back, Shikamaru – already a strong Chunin – estimated Tayuya’s skill level to be at least that of a Jonin. Similar to the other members of the Sound Four, Tayuya became much stronger when she activated her Curse Mark. Although she preferred fighting from a distance, she was also capable in close-quarters combat.
Tayuya, unlike the other members of the Sound Four, actually utilized sound in battle. She played a special flute that could trap opponents in illusions, but she mostly used it to command three powerful creatures to fight for her and weaken her enemies. Had Temari not stepped in, Tayuya would have likely defeated Shikamaru.
8. Sakon And Ukon
- Hidden Sound Village
Sakon and Ukon were identical twin brothers with a unique ability: they could combine into a single person. Ukon usually lived inside Sakon’s body, helping him fight by covering his weaknesses and adding extra limbs to his attacks. They were considered the most powerful members and leaders of the Sound Four during the mission to retrieve Sasuke.
I was absolutely fascinated by Sakon and Ukon! They had this incredible ability to heal almost instantly when they combined into one body. But it got even better when they used their second-level Curse Mark – their healing went into overdrive! And the really scary part? They could actually merge inside their opponents. Once they were inside someone else, they could just… rewrite their cells and take them down. Honestly, Kankuro only won because he managed to catch them by surprise when they were already weakened. It was a total fluke, but a clever one!
7. Hidan
- Hidden Steam Village
While Hidan wasn’t the most technically gifted member of the Akatsuki, he was still incredibly dangerous – a threat on par with a village leader. When his home, the Hidden Steam Village, became more focused on tourism and less on ninja training, Hidan found an outlet for his violent tendencies in the Jashin religion. This faith granted him immortality – making him one of the few immortal characters in Naruto – and a gruesome ability that essentially turned him into a living, breathing voodoo doll. Because of this, Hidan could defeat strong, experienced ninja like Asuma, and even powerful individuals with tailed beasts inside them, such as Yugito.
Okay, so Hidan was seriously terrifying! He fought with this huge, three-bladed scythe and was incredibly skilled with it. I remember even Kakashi, a future Hokage and a super-strong ninja with his Sharingan activated, struggled against him! What made Hidan almost unkillable was this crazy technique: if he tasted his opponent’s blood, he could transfer any damage he took onto them! He’d just draw a symbol for his god, Jashin, on the ground, and boom – you get hurt instead of him. Honestly, even a Kage-level ninja wouldn’t stand a chance if he managed to pull that off!
6. Jugo
- Hidden Sound Village
Although Jugo is recognized as a member of the Hidden Sound Village, he actually comes from a region close to Ryuchi Cave, not far from the Hidden Leaf Village. He sought out Orochimaru hoping to control his intense anger, but Orochimaru exploited his unique genetic makeup to create the Curse Mark. Like others from his clan, Jugo could naturally absorb energy from the environment, allowing him to achieve a limited form of Sage Mode.
Jugo’s Sage Mode isn’t as powerful as some, but it significantly boosts his physical strength and abilities. When fully activated, he transforms into a monstrous form, capable of reshaping his body into defenses like shields, weapons like blades, and even energy cannons. In this state, he can obliterate opponents at close range, and his body becomes incredibly resilient, able to endure a direct attack from the Fourth Raikage when he’s using his powerful lightning-enhanced chakra mode.
5. Kimimaro
- Hidden Sound Village
The Kaguya Clan, now gone, likely lived in the Land of Water, but they weren’t officially part of the Hidden Mist Village. Known for being fierce and always eager to fight, they ultimately destroyed themselves by recklessly attacking the Mist Village. Kimimaro was the only member left, and he ended up joining Orochimaru’s Hidden Sound Village. Besides Kabuto, Kimimaro was considered Orochimaru’s most powerful fighter. Kabuto even claimed that the attack on the Leaf Village would have been successful if Kimimaro had been present.
Kimimaro was very sick with a disease that kept him mostly confined to bed. Despite this, he was incredibly powerful, managing to defeat many of Naruto’s shadow clones and nearly killing Gaara before his illness overwhelmed him. Like many characters in Naruto, Kimimaro had a special ability called Kekkei Genkai – in his case, Shikotsumyaku, which allowed him to control his bones. He could form them into weapons like blades or fire them as projectiles, and even create a barrage of bones from the ground to attack his opponents. When using his Curse Mark, he gained even more power, transforming into a dinosaur-like form that could withstand even Gaara’s devastating Sand Tsunami.
4. Konan
- Hidden Rain Village
I remember learning about Konan, she was truly unique – the only woman in the Akatsuki, and one of the people who started it all. Her childhood was incredibly difficult; she lost her parents in the Second Great Ninja War. Luckily, she was taken in and trained by the legendary Jiraiya. What always struck me about her was her love for origami. She didn’t just enjoy it as a hobby, she actually built it into her fighting style with a technique called the Dance of the Shikigami. Basically, she could turn her chakra into paper and control it however she wanted – it was amazing to watch.
Konan was an incredibly powerful ninja, comparable to the strongest leaders, and skilled at fighting with paper. She could deflect powerful fire attacks, trap opponents in paper, or even cut them with razor-sharp paper. She could also create large-scale illusions, like trees or lakes, using paper. Though she was evenly matched against Obito Uchiha, a ninja of similar strength, she would have defeated him with a massive barrage of paper bombs if he hadn’t used a special technique called Izanagi to escape.
3. Kakuzu
- Hidden Waterfall Village
Hashirama Senju is widely considered a ninja god and is perhaps the most famous leader in the Naruto series. Kakuzu once tried to kill Hashirama but failed, though he did survive the battle. As punishment for failing the mission, Kakuzu’s village severely punished him, leading him to abandon them. Before leaving, he killed the village elders and stole a powerful technique called Earth Grudge Fear, which allowed him to create the signature tendrils he was known for.
Kakuzu achieved a form of immortality by taking the hearts of others, and these hearts also gave him the ability to use all five basic chakra natures. He fought using long, flexible tendrils, which he could use for sudden attacks from afar or to create masked duplicates. Kakuzu was the most battle-hardened member of Akatsuki, and he decisively defeated Kakashi in a fight. Without Hidan’s accidental destruction of his primary heart, Kakuzu would have likely defeated and killed Kakashi, Ino, and Choji on his own.
2. Fu
- Hidden Waterfall Village
The Hidden Waterfall Village was unique – it wasn’t one of the five major nations, but they were powerful enough to purchase Chomei, the Seven-Tails Beast. Fu became the host for Chomei, but the Akatsuki captured and killed her before they captured Gaara. Fu had the ability to temporarily blind enemies with a shimmering powder and could trap them using special webs.
Although Fu never fully mastered her connection with the Eight-Tails, Chomei, she could still tap into its incredible power. This allowed her to manifest two tails which she used as wings for flight. Being a host to Chomei granted Fu enhanced strength, resilience, and a faster healing ability. Her true strength, however, came from being able to unleash Chomei’s power whenever needed, and a single Tailed Beast Bomb from her was capable of destroying an entire village.
1. Nagato
- Hidden Rain Village
Nagato was one of the original members of the Akatsuki, and he became its leader after Yahiko died. He was a student of Jiraiya, just like Konan, and this training made him incredibly powerful, becoming one of the most skilled users of the Rinnegan. Although he didn’t originally own the Rinnegan—it belonged to Madara—Nagato fully learned how to use its abilities. He divided the Rinnegan’s power among six different bodies that he controlled, but he was also capable of using each ability himself.
Nagato was an incredibly powerful ninja with the ability to summon countless creatures and absorb almost any attack. He could steal someone’s soul with a touch, and even heal severe wounds or revive the dead. His body could also generate deadly metallic weapons, including saws, missiles, and energy blasts. Nagato’s signature technique was the Deva Path, which allowed him to manipulate attraction and repulsion – a power he famously used to obliterate the Hidden Leaf Village. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, he demonstrated his immense strength by easily defeating both Killer B, a host of immense power, and Naruto while he was using Nine-Tails Chakra Mode. He would have killed them both if Itachi Uchiha, brought back to life, hadn’t intervened with his powerful Susanoo.
