Netflix released the second season of Tom Segura’s comedy special, Bad Thoughts, on May 24th. It’s a bold and darkly humorous show that won’t appeal to all viewers, but those who enjoy it will likely crave similar content. Instead of searching for another show, viewers might find what they’re looking for in video games, allowing them to actively experience the kinds of thoughts explored in the series rather than just watching someone else perform them.
Get ready for a wild and often shocking comedy experience! We’re diving into humor that pushes boundaries and might make you squirm – but in a funny way. We’ll be exploring lots of different comedy styles, so there’s something for everyone.
1. High on Life
The Definitive Modern Dark Comedy Game
The game High on Life primarily aims to make players laugh with unexpected and often edgy jokes. While humor is always a matter of opinion, truly daring comedy often polarizes people, and that’s a good thing – content that doesn’t spark debate probably isn’t pushing boundaries enough.
Both High on Life and Bad Thoughts are pretty divisive – people either love them or hate them. They’re not afraid to be shocking, gross, or even a little disturbing with their humor, and they’ve become skilled at making you laugh even when you don’t want to. What’s also impressive is how well-made both of these properties are, with high production quality that surprisingly fits their edgy style of comedy.
2. The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe
The Masters Of Psychological Comedy
Tom Segura’s Bad Thoughts isn’t just pushing boundaries with its content; he’s also constantly surprising the audience. It’s a unique type of comedy that explores the mind, and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe could be considered the perfect example of this kind of show.
I’m a huge fan of games and comedy that take things in weird directions, and both Bad Thoughts and The Stanley Parable really nail that. Basically, they build entire bits around really dumb decisions people might make – like trying to cut corners at airport security or imagining a country singer doing something totally strange. What’s cool about The Stanley Parable is that it wants you to mess up! It actually rewards you for making the ‘wrong’ choice with more funny stuff, instead of punishing you. Honestly, before I checked them out, both of these sounded a little silly, but they’re surprisingly brilliant.
3. Postal 2
Give In To Your Worst Thoughts
Though it’s definitely raunchier and less refined, Postal 2 feels like the spiritual predecessor to Bad Thoughts. It’s a wild, chaotic experience where a normal day quickly descends into extreme violence and disorder, exploring what might happen if someone already struggling finally snaps and loses control.
Similar to the game Bad Thoughts, Postal 2 doesn’t start with a dramatic event. Instead, chaos unfolds from ordinary, frustrating situations. It’s like how a comedian like Tom Segura can build a hilarious story out of a minor annoyance at the airport. Postal 2 asks you to do simple, everyday tasks, but constantly tempts you to lose your temper and act on your darkest urges.
4. South Park: The Stick of Truth
This Is Where The Magic Happens
As a huge South Park fan, I have to say the show’s impact on comedy today is just massive – it’s hard to even put into words! And honestly, the game, The Stick of Truth, really surprised me. Sometimes the jokes felt like they were pulling out all the stops, but it totally nailed that chaotic, unpredictable South Park vibe. Plus, it’s a legitimately good RPG – I’d put it right up there with some of the best in the genre.
Tom Segura’s comedy often uses satire to poke fun at things like celebrity worship, big businesses, and everyday worries, pushing those ideas to their most ridiculous conclusions. His new show, The Stick of Truth, follows that same style, never holding back. It takes a simple kids’ game and places it within a world of government secrets, corporate corruption, and general silliness, satirizing everyone and everything without any limits.
Because I’m a big fan of South Park, I didn’t think the humor in The Stick of Truth was very shocking compared to the outrageous stuff in Bad Thoughts. Still, I think it’s a really funny game.
5. Disco Elysium
The Internal War Of A Broken Man
While not as outwardly funny as many other games mentioned, Disco Elysium is the most similar to Bad Thoughts in terms of its core ideas. The game portrays your inner struggles and weaknesses as distinct, vocal characters constantly battling each other, and you’re caught in the middle.
Tom Segura’s comedy special, Bad Thoughts, is funny because he openly talks about our most ridiculous, negative, and self-sabotaging thoughts. The video game Disco Elysium takes this idea and builds gameplay around it – the main character has skills that function like those inner impulses or voices. If you’re curious about what’s happening inside the head of someone in Bad Thoughts, the character Harry from Disco Elysium offers a good illustration.
Okay, so Disco Elysium is actually really funny, and its humor is similar to Bad Thoughts, though a bit more subtle. It’s not as in-your-face hilarious as something like The Stick of Truth or High on Life – those games really let you know they’re going for laughs right away. Disco Elysium‘s comedy is there, you just gotta look for it a little more.
6. Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP
Hip, Hip, Hooray!
After getting totally lost in the deep thoughts of Disco Elysium, I really needed something light and fun, but still a little edgy. Bad Thoughts feels like a really well-made, but totally unpretentious, B-movie – the kind where creators just go for it with ideas the big studios wouldn’t touch. It came out right when zombies were everywhere, and Lollipop Chainsaw just took that whole idea and cranked it up to eleven. Forget being scary, it was all about cheerleading, pom-poms, and a boyfriend whose head you carry around and talks! It was wonderfully absurd.
Suda51 and Grasshopper aren’t as widely known as big developers like Naughty Dog or Rockstar, but they’ve become famous for creating uniquely strange, over-the-top, and sometimes disturbing games. The remake, Lollipop Chainsaw Repop, perfectly blends extremely violent zombie action with a bright, colorful, and cheerful aesthetic of bubblegum pink, rainbows, and glitter. The combination is surprisingly effective.
7. Killer7
Suda51’s Bizarre Magnum Opus
Okay, let’s talk about another Suda51 game – and honestly, it’s probably his most famous, Killer7. If Lollipop Chainsaw felt like Grasshopper trying to hit the mainstream and maybe even get a movie deal, Killer7 was the game that proved they could and built them a fanbase to support it. And honestly, as crazy and weird as Killer7 gets, it actually fits really well with the vibe of that recent Netflix show – they both really focus on characters who are anything but normal.
The show Bad Thoughts features Tom Segura playing a variety of strange characters, each exploring a different dark idea. The game Killer7 works in a similar way. You control Harman Smith, an assassin in a wheelchair, who can transform into seven different personalities – each with unique skills and appearances, like a masked wrestler, a rebellious punk, or a blind fighter – to overcome unusual challenges.
It used to be hard to find a copy of Killer7, but it became widely available with a PC release in 2018. While its on-rails style of gameplay isn’t as instantly fun as games like Lollipop Chainsaw or No More Heroes, it actually suits the game’s unique atmosphere.
8. Manhunt
Rockstar At Its Worst (And I Mean That In A Positive Way)
It’s hard to talk about games like Bad Thoughts without mentioning Rockstar. While Grand Theft Auto is an obvious choice with its open world and realistic moments, Manhunt is where Rockstar truly gets dark. It creates a much more intense and disturbing feeling than any of the GTA games.
Tom Segura’s comedy often delves into people’s darkest sides, and that’s exactly what the show Manhunt is all about. You play a prisoner on death row tasked with killing gang members, all while being watched and manipulated by a cruel director (voiced by Brian Cox) who revels in the violence. While it’s not a comedy, Manhunt cleverly critiques how we consume media, a theme that feels particularly timely now that technology allows people to gain attention – even for their worst actions.
9. Thank Goodness You’re Here!
A Slice Of Absurd British Life
Get ready for a unique brand of comedy! Thank Goodness You’re Here delivers humor in the style of British cult classics like The League of Gentlemen. You’ll either absolutely love it, or find it hilariously unsettling.
The anthology format of Bad Thoughts seems to have been inspired by classic British comedy, and Thank Goodness You’re Here essentially translates that idea into a video game. The game begins with a salesman arriving in a strange town and immediately getting caught up in a series of odd, self-contained events. Both works share a similar approach to storytelling, with Thank Goodness You’re Here typically launching its storylines with a simple, everyday task or request.
10. Cult of the Lamb
Cult of the Lamb is a unique game that blends adorable visuals with dark themes. You play as a cute lamb who starts a doomsday cult, managing followers who are, let’s just say, not the most stable. While it doesn’t follow the typical story of a normal person going crazy, the contrast between the lamb’s innocent appearance and the violent actions it takes is similar to what makes the game Bad Thoughts so compelling.
The show features a storyline about a musician who imprisons his fans and creates a town devoted to himself, which is surprisingly similar to the idea behind Cult of the Lamb. In the game, you’re in charge of everything – deciding who works, who gets punished, and even who is sacrificed for the benefit of your followers.
