Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition will be released on the Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026. This new version is an enhanced update to the game that first came to Nintendo Switch in 2019.
The Dragon Quest series recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, and with so many games and related media, it can be overwhelming for newcomers. Beyond the main numbered role-playing games, Dragon Quest includes spin-offs, novels, comics, and animated series. The titles themselves can also be quite confusing! Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a prime example. First released in Japan in 2017 for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4, Dragon Quest XI received a complete “definitive” edition in 2019. This version, called Dragon Quest XI S, initially launched exclusively on Nintendo Switch before becoming available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One the following year. Dragon Quest XI S included both English and Japanese voice acting, a revamped 2D mode inspired by the original 3DS game, an orchestral soundtrack, and various gameplay improvements like faster battles.

Unfortunately, players who already own Dragon Quest XI S on the original Nintendo Switch won’t be able to easily upgrade to the new version. Currently, there’s no way to upgrade, and the game’s official online store page states that there are no plans to offer an upgrade pack. Also, save data won’t transfer between the original Switch version and the new version of the game.

During the celebration of its 40th anniversary, a new Dragon Quest Monsters game was revealed. Called Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, it’s the eighth main game in the series and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series X/S.
