Modern Warfare 4 Has to Do Price vs. Ghost Justice, But Can It?

The next installment in the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, is officially launching in 2026, as confirmed by the recently released trailer. Developed by Infinity Ward, the game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2. The campaign will follow the series’ tradition of taking players to various locations around the world. One part of the story focuses on South Korean soldiers fighting to survive in North Korea, while the other takes place in cities like New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Many fans will be especially interested in the latter half, which centers on Captain Price and a story of revenge that pits him against his former teammate, Ghost.

If you’ve forgotten the story of Modern Warfare 3, here’s a quick recap of why Ghost and Price are now enemies. After capturing Makarov, General Shepherd secretly ordered Task Force 141 to keep him alive. This allowed Makarov to escape, cause more destruction, and ultimately kill Price’s friend, Soap. Feeling that loose ends need to be tied up – a philosophy Makarov himself followed – Price killed Shepherd, who was responsible for both Soap’s death and the betrayal of Shadow Company in Modern Warfare 2. While eliminating Shepherd prevented further damage, Price is now being hunted by the US military and, surprisingly, Task Force 141. Considering the history of the Call of Duty series, it’s doubtful that the conflict between Price and Ghost in Modern Warfare 4 will have the emotional weight it deserves.

Modern Warfare 4 is Going All-In on Ghost vs. Captain Price

Rather than ending the trailer for MW4 with a large-scale action scene, Infinity Ward chose a more personal moment: a direct confrontation between Price and Ghost. This isn’t just a trailer ending – the official artwork for the new Modern Warfare game also focuses on this conflict, suggesting it will be a central part of the story. It certainly aims to make players believe this battle is incredibly important.

As a huge Call of Duty fan, I’m seriously buzzing about the potential for a rift within Task Force 141! I’m imagining MW4 letting us actually pick a side before things get really heated between Ghost and Price – maybe even deciding who wins and changing how the story ends. It would be incredible – and heartbreaking – to see a final boss fight where Price and Ghost are forced to fight, trading painful memories as they go. Poor Gaz could be stuck in the middle, having to choose between loyalty to his mentor and doing what he thinks is right. It all sounds amazing, but honestly, I’m a little worried it might just be a flashy marketing trick and not actually impact the story in a meaningful way.

Modern Warfare 4 Needs to Be More Like Resident Evil Requiem, Less Like Halo 5

Ghost vs. Price really needs to deliver solid hand-to-hand fighting, quick, up-close gun battles, and smart tactical gameplay.

Halo 5: Guardians is often cited as a prime example of misleading game marketing. The game heavily promoted a major conflict between Locke and Master Chief, but they spend most of the campaign working separately. While they do have a short confrontation, it’s quickly resolved and they realize they’re not truly enemies. Disappointingly, this ‘fight’ happens in a cutscene, preventing players from experiencing a battle against the iconic Master Chief. The campaign in Halo 5 was ultimately a disappointment, largely because the game didn’t deliver on the promises made in its marketing.

The artwork for the new Modern Warfare 4 looks a lot like Halo 5, which is a bit worrying. While the idea of pitting two famous Call of Duty characters against each other sounds exciting, it’s the actual game that needs to deliver, and there are legitimate concerns. After the disappointing story in the last Modern Warfare game, it’s hard to trust the developers to handle this important moment well. It’s also difficult to picture a satisfying boss battle between two of Call of Duty’s biggest heroes. The series hasn’t been known for great boss fights – the recent Modern Warfare games mostly had uninspired stealth missions or tank battles. A simple long-distance shootout, or even a scripted fight similar to those in Halo 5, feels like the most likely outcome, and probably won’t satisfy fans.

It would be disappointing if the anticipated confrontation between Ghost and Price turned out to be just a simple shooting sequence or a cinematic cutscene, but it’s a real possibility given the series’ history. Call of Duty games have often struggled with big boss fights, particularly in realistic settings, and frequently rely on quick-time events or pre-determined action sequences. We could easily see that happen again in MW4. However, Infinity Ward could learn from a good example: the recent Resident Evil Requiem. That game finally delivered a satisfying fight between Leon and HUNK, with impactful melee combat, close-quarters shooting, and strategic gameplay. That’s the kind of experience the Ghost vs. Price fight should deliver, truly testing their skills, potentially even across multiple encounters throughout the campaign. But designing a robust and engaging melee system – and making it feel natural in first-person – would be a significant challenge for Infinity Ward, and it’s hard to picture them avoiding simpler solutions like quick-time events.

Right now, all fans of Call of Duty can do is wait and see, as the first trailers only show what leads up to the big confrontation. However, by heavily focusing their marketing on the rivalry between Price and Ghost, Infinity Ward and Activision are suggesting this encounter will be a major highlight. If the fight is too brief, doesn’t let players participate, or is predictable – like a simple reconciliation – players might be let down. While the setting for MW4 looks good, and the new storyline for Ghost as a government agent could be interesting, there’s still cause for concern about this central battle.
