As a passionate cinephile, I’ve always been captivated by the intricate narratives that span across various platforms in the Transformers universe. These tales offer fresh perspectives on iconic characters like Optimus Prime and Megatron, revealing layers of complexity and power dynamics that keep me engaged. In some instances, these two titans square off, creating a tense standoff where their might is evenly matched.
Sometimes, Megatron is portrayed as the more powerful of the two characters, necessitating Optimus Prime to rise against a formidable adversary. Yet, it’s important to note that Optimus Prime doesn’t always emerge victorious. In fact, there are several instances where victory falls in Megatron’s favor. This compilation will solely focus on direct confrontations between Megatron and Optimus Prime, excluding scenarios like the one depicted in “All Hail Megatron,” where the focus is on Megatron’s successful domination.
6. Transformers: Armada
Optimus is Helpless to Stop Megatron’s Decisive Attack and Survives through Intervention
- Episode 21 – Decisive Battle
- First released May 30, 2003 (Japanese)
In this scenario, Megatron and Optimus Prime engage in a confrontation, with Megatron aggressively attacking Optimus who finds himself cornered near a deep crack in the earth. Unlike Megatron, wielding an energy blade, Optimus stands defenceless. As Megatron lifts his energy sword, all Optimus can manage is to protect a Mini-Con in his care from the incoming assault.
In a surprising turn of events, the Skyboom Shield successfully defended against Megatron’s assault. This unexpected intervention was orchestrated by none other than Sparkplug, the minicon that Optimus safeguards. If not for Sparkplug taking control over the shield, Optimus might have succumbed to Megatron in this battle.
5. Transformers Prime
Megatron Overwhelms Optimus and Pins Him To the Ground
- Episode 23 – One Shall Fall
- First released August 21, 2011
In the animated series “Transformers Prime,” Megatron is bent on reviving his overlord, Unicron, by amassing vast amounts of dark energy. However, the Autobots, under the leadership of Optimus Prime, constantly work to foil his plans. During this particular episode, it appears that Optimus has the advantage in their struggle. In fact, at one point, Megatron winds up on Optimus’ back as he continues to press forward.
Nevertheless, Megatron reverses the situation by snatching the blade that Optimus Prime aimed to end him with. He retaliates by using Optimus’ own words against him, breaking his blade, and initiating an assault of his own. Overpowered, Optimus collapses under Megatron who draws a blade, leaving Optimus defenseless. Miraculously, Optimus manages to live because his allies intervene by appearing instantly in the fray, whisking him away through a portal to safety.
4. Transformers (G1)
A 1v1 Duel, Which Optimus Loses
- Episode 16 – Heavy Metal War
- First released December 15, 1984
In simpler terms, Megatron proposes a solitary showdown against Optimus Prime, a proposition accepted by the latter. Both parties agree to fight without external aid, and the vanquished one will be banished from the planet in exile. Unfortunately, Optimus isn’t aware that Megatron has secretly amplified his power before the confrontation begins.
Megatron has beaten me according to Cybertron law. To violate that law would destroy our honor.
Megatron dominates Optimus during their battle, forcing Optimus to agree to the duel’s conditions, which means the Autobots will depart Earth for good. Once they discover that Megatron’s strength increase comes from the other Decepticons, it is no longer a single combat, and the Autobots respond with counterattacks.
3. The Transformers: Autocracy
Megatron Defeats Optimus, Only to See Him Rise Stronger Than Before
- IDW Publishing
- First released January 18, 2012
The comic series, ‘Transformers: Autocracy’, delves into the beginnings of Megatron and Optimus Prime, initially known as Orion Pax. They forge an alliance to overthrow Zeta Prime’s oppressive rule. In this tale, Megatron takes down Zeta Prime, while Optimus instructs Ironhide to call in Ratchet and his technical team for support.
Instead, Megatron seizes this moment to drill a gaping opening through Orion Pax’s chest and then hurls him into the chasm below. Yet, despite leaving Orion shattered in the Undergrid’s depths, this act ultimately allows him to claim the Matrix of Leadership, empowering himself even further than before.
This would serve as the source material for the Transformers One film.
2. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Optimus is Outnumbered and Falls, Despite Putting Up an Impressive Fight
- Second live-action film
- First released June 24, 2009
In the sequel, Megatron reappears for another confrontation with Optimus Prime. The initial battle saw Megatron dominating Optimus, but it was human character Sam Witwicky who intervened using the Allspark, causing Megatron’s defeat. However, this time around, the circumstances seem to favor Megatron, as he and his followers square off against an apparently indomitable Optimus Prime.
In the heat of the fight, Megatron manages to pierce Optimus from behind, causing him to fall in combat. The movie’s events culminate with Sam acquiring the Matrix of Leadership, a tool that brings Optimus Prime back to life. However, this resurgence does not erase the fact that Megatron emerged victorious over Optimus.
1. The Transformers: The Movie
Megatron Achieves Definitive Victory Over Optimus Prime
- The first movie of the Transformers
- First released August 8, 1986
In their fierce battle, Megatron and Optimus trade blows, sustaining damage until Optimus emerges victorious. Desperate, Megatron feigns surrender, pleading with Optimus for mercy, a trick that doesn’t sway the cold-hearted Optimus. Disappointed but aware of the delay, Megatron takes advantage of the moment to prepare himself for another attack.
Megatron and Optimus fight hard in a battle where they both get hurt. Later, Megatron pretends to surrender, asking Optimus for mercy, which doesn’t work. This trick gives Megatron time to prepare for another round.
Instead of immediately firing at Megatron for total victory, Optimus steps aside, giving way for Hot Rod to lunge onto Megatron. This move keeps Optimus from shooting, letting Megatron seize Hot Rod as a hostage and ruthlessly attack Optimus Prime. Though Megatron sustains heavy damage, he later gets rebuilt stronger than ever. Contrary to the live-action films, Optimus does not recover from his injuries this time around.
