Previously, when Nintendo introduced a follow-up console to their existing line, it didn’t perform particularly well. The Wii U stands as one of the most notable examples of gaming consoles that failed to meet expectations. Consequently, when the Nintendo Switch 2 was unveiled, there were several skeptics in the crowd.
Although there’s still some debate about this, it seems almost undeniable that they are vastly mistaken. An industry expert, as reported by Bloomberg, has made an intriguing forecast based on the pre-order figures from Japan: The Switch 2 is predicted to have the largest console launch in history, and it’s not even a close competition.
As a point of comparison, it’s worth noting that Sony currently holds the title in this specific area, as they managed to sell 4.5 million units of both their PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles within just two months (credit goes to VGC for this information).
2.2 million individuals have entered the pre-order lottery for the Switch 2 exclusively in Japan. Given that Japan makes up about a third of Nintendo’s console market, a simple calculation suggests a substantial potential sales number for this product.
6.6 million represents a significantly larger number than any attempt by Sony to launch their console. Even if the analyst’s calculations are inaccurate by a considerable amount, 6.6 million remains an impressive figure that leaves room for interpretation.
If Japan matches global sales for the new Switch console, and Nintendo sells two Switches 2 for every one sold elsewhere, this would amount to approximately 4.4 million units sold. While this number falls short of dethroning Sony, it would nonetheless establish the Switch 2 as a significant achievement in Nintendo’s success story.
Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders Are A Wild Ride

Previous experiences with the Nintendo Switch 2’s pre-orders remind us of the turmoil that occurred during the launch of the PlayStation 5, leaving those in the know with a sense of déjà vu.
In many cases, automated programs (bots) and scalpers find themselves in a contest against genuine fans, creating an uneven playing field that seems unjust. On the other hand, merchants are trying their best to keep these competitors at bay.
The immense popularity of the PlayStation 5 may be the reason for its initial problems. If the Nintendo Switch 2 enters the same market, we can expect significant sales figures once it’s officially released.
Additionally, it’s important to note that Nintendo could face challenges in meeting the high demand from audiences. While pre-orders and consumer interest are crucial indicators, delivering consoles to customers is a whole different challenge.
It seems that Nintendo might not have sufficient quantities of the Switch 2 to meet demand, as suggested by their president.
In the days ahead, it might be necessary for you to stay well-informed and alert if you wish to enjoy Mario Kart World on its release day. Be prepared to seize opportunities promptly as they present themselves.
At the very least, though – avoid buying from scalpers if you can help it. They’re pretty icky.
